Hello and welcome to the Calmer You Podcast. This is your host, Chloe Brotheridge. I'm a coach, a hypnotherapist, and I'm the author of The Anxiety Solution and Brave New Girl. And this podcast is all about helping you to become your calmest, happiest and most confident self.
Chloe Brotheridge: So, welcome to this episode. This is a COVID-19 themed episode. Today, after this week, I'm going to be going back to my pre-recorded episodes that I planned, obviously, before this whole situation kicked off. So, perhaps that will be a bit of distraction, a bit more normality to get back to. So, hopefully I'll look forward to that.
But this week, I'm talking to the wonderful Dr. Frankie Jackson-Spence, who is a GP, and she has been sharing a lot about the facts around COVID-19, and busting a lot of myths and helping people to feel calmer and less anxious by spreading helpful information. So, I really wanted to speak to her about this topic.
So, she shares about how she's handling it, how her job has changed as a result of this crisis. We talk about the importance of physical distancing. She busts some of the most common myths that she hears and she shares her tips for feeling calm in the face of the situation.
I also want to let you know that I've created a new tool kit which is designed to help you to feel calm and resilient in uncertain times. You can check out on my website at calmer-you.com/benddontbreak. So, that's calmer-you.com/benddontbreak. So, let's get into the interview with Dr. Frankie.
This episode is sponsored by my favourite active wear brand, Sweaty Betty. They’re all-female design team. So, it’s the best technical fabrics, which means our products perform under the toughest conditions and feel amazing on your skin.
All products are also wearer trialed by female staff to ensure they perform and flatter and fit the female body. If the staff don’t love it, it doesn't get made.
There are so many active wear brands to shop from, but Sweaty Betty is special because all their products from run and yoga to swim and ski are engineered to last. This is not fast fashion, it's high quality. And I have several pieces from Sweaty Betty that I've had for years and I continue to wear and love.
Sweaty Betty now has a host of sustainable products, including the super sculpt leggings made from post-consumer plastic bottles.

Mentally fit with Shona Vertue
Chloe Brotheridge: Hello and welcome to the ‘Calmer
You’ podcast. This is your host Chloe Brotheridge. I am a coach, a
hypnotherapist and I'm the author of the ‘Anxiety Solution’ and ‘Brave New Girl’.
Thank you so much for listening today. I have an amazing guest this week Shona Vertue.
Shona is known for being a fitness instructor and yoga teacher. But for some
reason, this conversation isn't actually that much about fitness. We get into
such a varied number of topics. She has had her career so far in the fitness
industry, but she is now studying psychology and so this is a real passion of
hers.
So, we get into topics like her experience of therapy, why it's totally
okay to have therapy and we talk about things like how to find a therapist. We
talk about something called ‘Attachment Theory’ and you might have heard this
before. Some of us might be anxiously attached for example and it has to do
with things that happened in our childhood. We really get into why there's
nothing to be ashamed about if you're somebody that is perhaps needy or
codependent in relationships because it's not your fault and it can often go
back to these things in childhood. So, we chat about that.
We get into the pressures and boundaries of social media and I also ask her my favorite question to ask people which is. How are you really? I love Shona’s answer this, she's really honest and open and talks about something that I think a lot of us can relate to particularly at this time of year. So, I think gonna love this episode. I felt like I was chatting to an old friend where I met show know even though we just met ten minutes before.
Confidence Challenge
Also, I want to let you know that my confidence challenge is coming up on the 24th of February 2020. You can sign up at Calmeryou.com/confidence.

think differently and take some action. So, that you can take a few steps
towards living the life that you want to live, being the person that you want
to be, accepting and loving yourself more, building your own self as and just
feeling better about being you overall. Last time I ran, it was really really
amazing to see how people made profound changes over just five days and made
new friends and expanded their idea of what's possible for them. So, I'd love
for you to join us as well. You need to sign up and register to get all the
downloads and workbooks and access the community. You can do that on my website
calmeryou.com/confidence.
So, let's get into the episode, with Shona. Welcome Shona, thank you so
much for joining me. How are you?
Shona Vertue: I am good. Thank you for
having me.
Chloe Brotheridge: I would love to know a bit
about, what it is that you do people that don't know.
Shona Vertue: Okay.
Chloe Brotheridge: And how you got to where you
are today? Can you share a bit about that?

Transcript
Chloe: Hello, and welcome to the Calmer You Podcast. This is your host Chloe Brotheridge. Welcome. I am a coach, a hypnotherapist, and I'm the author of The Anxiety Solution and Brave New Girl.
On today's Podcast
And today, on the podcast, I've got the wonderful Julia Samuel, MBE, who is a psychotherapist, and she's also the author of two books; Grief Works, and her latest book, This Too Shall Pass, which is all about how to navigate changes. And you know, we're so scared of change, aren’t we? On one hand, we really want change, we want transformation. And on the other hand, how many of us can get stuck keeping things the same because change just feels too scary, and it feels safer to stick with what we know even though it's uncomfortable.
So, we
talked about this whole topic of change. We discussed what's known as the
fertile void, and I love how Julia explains this and how we can cultivate this
in our lives, and it can help us to handle changes in our lives. We talked
about how business stops us from healing and what we need to do instead. We
also get into the topic of grief and what to say to someone who's grieving and
how to handle that yourself about something that's affecting you at the moment.
We also touch on the particular struggles that millennials and those of a
similar generation face. So, I want to let you know that I have some free
resources for confidence, self-esteem, and anxiety. If you want to grab those
freebies, head over to my website, CalmerYou.com/Free, and I'll send you lots of resources, worksheets,
downloads, updates about the podcast. Head over to CalmerYou.com/Free. So, let's get into the interview with Julia Samuel.
Welcome, Julia. Thank you so much for joining me. How are you today?
Julia:
Really well. Lovely to meet you, Chloe.
Chloe: Could
you please share with us what it is that you do and how you came to do the work
that you do today?
More about Julia Samuel
Julia: So, I'm a psychotherapist and I've been a psychotherapist for 30 years. 25 years I worked in the NHS at a big NHS hospital supporting families when babies died and children died. So, I was the counselor for pediatrics and maternity.
From there, I helped started or established and launched a charity called Child Bereavement UK, which was supporting families when a child died or when a child's bereaved. From there, I sort of taught a lot and lectured a lot. I've gone into private practice in the last few years, about the last five years. And I wrote another book before and this is my second book. So, I'm a seasoned therapist and a new author. So, one is kind of an old hat and the other feels exciting and scary. And I'm not even sure I can call myself an author.
Chloe:
Amazing. And I can't imagine work more, I don’t know, intense than working with
people that have lost a child. I think that's incredible that you've done that
work. What was that like?
