It’s challenging enough to be a parent of a teenager-but to be a parent of teen during a Pandemic can take us to the edge and push boundaries we never even imagined we’d have to have!

To provide us with insight, perspective and guidance so we can both maintain our own healthy boundaries and support our teens developmental needs and unique life challenges during this time-I’ve invited my colleague Jenni Wiech-a social worker and psychotherapist who has been working with teens and their parents for over a decade.

Jenni specializes in family systems theory and teaches practices for healthy attachment and healing trauma. She works through a mindfulness based approach called Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) that helps people to develop skills for self-awareness, emotional regulation, effective communication and healthy boundaries.
Here's a peak at a few things we talked about:

  • Understanding and making space for grief-in ourselves and in our teens for the loss of traditional ways of celebrating and experiencing significant life events (graduation, moving up ceremonies, awards ceremonies), delayed or interrupted college life and more...
  • Effective ways of dealing with pushback, anger and defiance around social distancing guidelines.
  • How to stop fighting and work compassionately with our teens to find solutions for socializing that meets the safety needs of the entire family.
  • Simple strategies for helping our teens (and ourselves) manage anxiety, stress and panic attacks.

This will be a 2 part series focused on parenting teens! Our next episode in two weeks is Part 2 which will be focused on issues parents and teens are facing related to the ongoing protests and the burgeoning racial justice movement we are living through.

In this episode, we discuss the powerful tool of Astrology for personal and spiritual growth and evolution. Not the often misunderstood, over-simplified pop-culture sun-sign horoscopes you may be familiar with. But we're talking about the deep insight and wisdom that can come from a professional astrological reading of our birth chart which my guest, Astrologer Sarah Fuhro, describes as a personal map and compass for our soul's journey in this lifetime. Here some things we discussed:

  • Fate vs. free-will through the eyes of astrology
  • How astrology can reveal the soul lessons and gifts hidden in our life challenges, losses and traumas
  • How astrology can help us see the soul contracts and opportunities for growth in our key relationships
  • The important influence of the position of the Moon, and our Ascendent (planet on the horizon) at the moment of our birth.
  • A primer of the 12 houses of the zodiac-what aspects of our life they each represent and how the planets that are transiting through them at the moment of our birth set up the framework for our life story.
  • Covid pandemic-astrological influences and evolutionary potentials for humanity held by this event
  • Generational astrology-understanding timed astrological events that affect each of us (new and full moons, Saturn Return (mid-life “crisis”) as cosmic forces that usher in initiations for our personal growth and our Soul’s evolution

This is Part 2 in our special series for parents of Teens in this epic time of change where we are facing both a global pandemic and a burgeoning racial justice movement. To provide insight, perspective and guidance so we can both maintain our own healthy boundaries and support our teens developmental needs and unique life challenges I’ve invited my colleague Jenni Wiech LICSW-a psychotherapist who has been working with teens and their parents for over a decade.
Here's a peak at what we discussed:

  • How to support the strong desire in many of our teens to be activists while keeping them safe in a pandemic.
  • How we can keep our eyes and minds open while we ride the steep learning curve we are on as parents as many of us are working to educate ourselves and keep pace with the awarenesses many of our kids already have around racism, and inequality and the effect of implicit racial bias and white privilege on people of color.
  • How to help our kids respond to the complexities of activism in the world of social media, where they may be finding themselves being called out, criticized and sometimes bullied by peers whether they speak out against racism or stay silent.

Jenni Wiech specializes in family systems theory and teaches practices for healthy attachment and healing trauma. She works through a mindfulness based approach called Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) that helps people to develop skills for self-awareness, emotional regulation, effective communication and healthy boundaries.

#005- Today’s episode is all about inspiring you and reminding you of the power we each have to make an impact in the world and to help create positive change toward the well-being of each other especially those who are marginalized in our communities -when we come together in solidarity.
The Rainbow Peace Flag Project started as the simple act of one person in one neighborhood in Natick MA hanging a rainbow peace flag at half mast in solidarity with those in the LGBTQ community following the bombing of the Pulse night club in Orlando in 2016.
This small but powerful gesture of kindness galvanized others, first in the local community and eventually grew into a movement that spread across the country and the world to thousands of people who hung these flags from their homes, their cars, buses, schools and businesses.
A movement that evolved the RPF into a beacon that condemns acts of violence and hatred, and stands for kindness and caring that extends beyond the LGBTQ community and also includes people of all nations, abilities, religions, races, political views, and cultures.

Have you ever felt like you're being held back by your past?
What if your most challenging emotional patterns and family relationship struggles were actually passed down to you energetically through your DNA because of intergenerational trauma?
What if you could free yourself from these binds and release these patterns at their root, with simple tools that work with your system energetically?
If any of this intrigues you and you'd like to learn more, you're going to love this episode with Flower Essence Practitioner and Family Constellation Therapist, Anu Gulati!

Here's a snapshot of some of things we talked about:

  • How our most challenging emotional reactions and family relationship struggles can be caused by unresolved issues and traumas in our ancestral line.
  • How we can shift these issues and traumas energetically with the use of Flower Essences and sacred ritual that honors our ancestors.
  • How flower essences differ from essential oils, and how essences can help us to shift us out of dark emotions (anger, fear, grief, anxiety, etc.) and into more inner peace and calm.

Plus-Anu shares her free tools to help you identify the intergenerational patterns that may be holding you back and how to tap into the underlying message and wisdom that your difficult emotions are trying to tell you.

There is a call for ally-ship in transforming racism in our world right now, that is deep, loud, and finally being heard in the white community.

However, many White people are hesitating to take action, uncertain about the most effective and conscious ways to step up, speak out, and take thoughtful action to help end centuries of injustice, oppression, and violence.

Often, in conversations about racism we remain silent because we're afraid of:
Saying something that might reveal our unconscious biases.
Afraid of getting caught not knowing what we don’t know.
Afraid of offending our friends and colleagues of color.
Afraid of offending our White friends and family by challenging racist comments out for fear of losing these relationships and breaking white solidarity.

To help guide us through these challenges so we can show up as true allies — and actively participate in a global transformation who's time as come — is my guest
Kimberlee Williams, a diversity, equity and inclusion consultant and coach.

Here Are Some Key Things We Discussed:

  • Understanding what white supremacy IS and what it's NOT. (Hint: it's not a "White" problem but -something that implicitly lives in everyone (regardless of race) who lives in a White-centric culture.
  • Becoming aware of our own implicit racial bias, getting over the need to be "perfect" and learning why it's inevitable that White people will inadvertently say things to offend People of Color.
  • 3 simple and essential steps White people can take when this happens to step out of shame and defensiveness and use these uncomfortable moments as opportunities to re-build trust and forge deeper connections with Black people/People of Color.
  • Learning how we interpret what it means to "care" very differently according to our cultural norms and how knowing and responding compassionately to these differences is an essential to re-building trust across the racial divide.

Join me for a conversation with Damon Farnum, a Nondual Kabbalistic and Shamanic Healer and spiritual teacher who has dedicated his life to the evolutionary journey of the soul, helping others to integrate the difficulties we all have from simply being human and manifest more of their innate wholeness in all aspects of their lives.
Some of the things we chatted about:
1) The benefits of learning how to meet the more difficult aspects of our selves and our lives with self-kindness and self-acceptance instead of judgment and criticism.
2) What it means to be whole and the critical differences between healing ourselves and fixing ourselves.
3) How our personal wounding and feelings of “brokenness” can be used as doorways to more self-awareness, self-empowerment and self-love and even joy.

4) The paradoxical idea of becoming un-defended in our life and in our relationships and how cultivating this capacity can become our truest power.
5) The growing desire many people our having for spiritual friendship and how cultivating these kinds of conscious and intentional relationships can deeply support us to heal the wounds of the past and to evolve and grow.
