Retail leadership isn’t what it used to be — and neither are you.

After 30+ years of navigating the realities of store floors, boardrooms, restructures, and reinventions, I’ve learned this: the gap between what retail leaders need to grow and what companies actually provide is wider than ever. Promotions don’t come with clarity. Expectations rise, but context disappears. And while the metrics may shift, the pressure never does.

This podcast is for the retail leader who's already proven themselves — and still wants more.

This podcast is for the experienced retail leader who wants more — not more work, but more direction, more insight, and more impact.

I'm Steve Worthy — retail executive coach and founder of Worthy Retail Global. I’ve coached and developed thousands of leaders over three decades, and I created this podcast to give you the straight, strategic guidance I wish I had earlier in my career.

You’ve earned your position. Now let’s make sure you lead like it.

Retail Leadership with Steve Worthy - THE LAW OF ADDITION

THE LAW OF ADDITION

Leadership is a process and it takes time to master, there’s no way around the process

  • Trust the process
  • What is does influence really mean:
    • Things may look bad now, but we have a plan in place to make it better.”

LAW OF ADDITION

The law of addition focuses on how to add value to your team in order to create more leaders to grow. Leaders who pour into their teams create more leaders. We know we can use more authentic leadership these days.

True leaders ask “How can I serve?” Because they are focused on service, it’s not so much about “What’s in it for me.”

As a retail leader, a large portion of your role is to invest in your team beyond their paycheck. The law of addition provides you an idea of how to serve your team

Three tips on how t add value to your team

  1. Value others
    1. Value their time
    2. Information - people seem to have inside knowledge on a market, idea, trend, or community, and are known as people who spread change through their knowledge.
    3. Culture - what time of culture are you creating as a leader
  2. Make yourself more valuable

The premise of adding value to the lives of your team members is that you intentionally add impact and substance. You cannot give what you don’t have.

  1. Know and relate to what others value

“Inexperienced leaders are quick to lead before knowing anything about the people they intend to lead. But mature leaders listen, learn, and then lead.” John C. Maxwell

Many leaders are too quick to take charge. A good leader takes the opportunity to listen to what every person believes is important and then leads.

“The bottom line in leadership isn’t how far we advance ourselves but how far we advance others,” John C. Maxwell wrote. Great leaders derive pleasure from making life better for others by adding value to them. They are intentional about adding merit and making it part of their core values.

Developing and executing influence and being active in your own journey are keys to success.

Part One of a Three Part Series - In this episode we have special guest Nan Henson, Founder of Enneagram Atlanta. We unpack the idea of decision-making by personality type and explore the path to decision making, which is the most important of any final decision. We begin by discussing a overview of the Enneagram and its foundational principles and how it impacts each individual differently. Then we discuss Types 8 - The Challenger, 9 - The Peacemaker and 1 - The Reformer.
ENNEAGRAM PERSONALITY MODEL⠀

There are many great maps of personality – too many to list. These maps describe how we look on the outside, our landscaping or our terrain. They help us see our particular traits, our actions and reactions, our coping methods and our style of speaking. ⠀

What makes the Enneagram different is that it also gives us a Map for what is going on inside (our internal landscape or terrain). It helps us understand WHY we do the things we do and what is driving us. It shows us the lens through which we see the world and gives us a look through others’ lenses. It is a powerful Map that shows us what it feels like to be in our own skin and it offers a way to understand others in theirs.⠀

5 Levels Of Leadership - What level are you on?

5 LEVELS OF LEADERSHIP

Level 1 — Position
The lowest level of leadership—the entry-level, if you will—is Position. It’s the only level that requires no ability or effort to achieve. After all, anyone can be appointed to a position!

People who remain on the position level may find it difficult to work with volunteers. Why? Because position does not automatically result in influence, and volunteers are aware that they don’t have to follow anyone. They truly only follow if they want to.

Level 2 — Permission
Level 2 is based on relationships. At this level, people choose to follow because they want to. In other words, they give the leader Permission to lead them. To grow at this level, leaders work on getting to know their people and connecting with them. You can’t lead without people, which means you need to learn to like people if you want to lead well!

Level 3 — Production
The best leaders know how to motivate their people to GTD – get things done! And getting things done is what Level 3 is all about. On this level, leaders who produce results build their influence and credibility. People still follow because they want to, but they do it because of more than the relationship. People follow Level 3 leaders because of their track record.

Level 4 — People Development
Level 4 can be summed up in one word: reproduction. Your goal at this level is to identify and develop as many leaders as you can by investing in them and helping them grow.

The reason is simple: When there are more leaders, more of the organization’s mission can be accomplished. When you invest in them, you can reproduce yourself.

Level 5 — Personhood
The highest level of leadership is also the most challenging to attain. It requires longevity as well as intentionality. You simply can’t reach Level 5 unless you are willing to invest your life into the lives of others for the long haul. But if you stick with it, if you continually focus on both growing yourself at every level, and developing leaders who are willing and able to develop other leaders, you may find yourself at the Pinnacle.

COVID-19 has not just changed the world but also changed the DNA of our workplace ecosystem in many ways. Leaders must change as well to lead effectively in this new era. If this pandemic experience has taught us anything, it’s that leadership matters and for many organizations facing decidedly fragile futures, it may matter now more than ever as the country tries to emerge from forced hibernation and rebuild a broken economy.
Retail and front-line leaders need to perform at the highest levels. How they cope with a post-pandemic environment will determine success or failure. Here are the six post-pandemic leadership traits every retail leader needs to succeed in the workplace following a pandemic.
We outline the Five Skills for success:

  1. Humility
  2. Empathetic Listening
  3. Flexibility
  4. Candid Communication
  5. Cultural Sensitivity

Let’s Demystify Mentorship vs Sponsorship - Once and for All!
On Today’s episode - Pt. One - we will demystify and take a deep dive into the mentor and sponsor relationship and define their importance along the leadership journey. We Set the stage and focus on Mentor and Sponsorship as it relates to Diversity.
These two episodes are dedicated in loving memory to my good friend and mentor Jim Hogan a loving husband, father and leader. Jim impacted my life in so many ways from our love of sports, leadership and developing people. But most of all his love of life and sense of humor were the true genius of his leadership and why so many people loved him. Jim Hogan, a great husband, father, leader and friend.
Episode Overview
Mentor and Sponsor Relationships are:
1. Defined relationships
2. Structured and intentional with a common goal
3. Pragmatic and sensible
Mentoring:
• can expose diverse individuals into new and insightful professional realms
• Mentorship is not limited to just the workplace. In some organizations, Diversity pipelines can be weak. It’s important that non-diverse leaders assist in mentoring outside of the organization for a greater impact.
Sponsorship:
• Is more effective than mentoring in delivering real-world results because they directly create career progress
• A sponsor can help take charge of the professional experiences and positioning for your career
In part two we will discuss it from three perspectives:
✓ Leadership second their impact on leaders
✓ Coaching - provide some practical application some do’s and don’ts related to mentors/mentees and sponsorship
