Real Crime Profile

“Making A Murderer” the Netflix documentary about the 2005 murder of 25 year old Teresa Halbach near Green Bay, Wisconsin and the prime suspect in her killing Steven Avery took the world by storm in 2015 launching many viewer theories and passionate camps as to what may have really happened to the young photographer and who was responsible for her horrific murder. Avery, who had been wrongfully convicted of a violent sexual assault in 1985 was exonerated when DNA evidence proved another man was the true offender, and released in 2003 after serving 18 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Just two years later, Steven Avery would again be the focus of an investigation, this time for Teresa's murder. The filmmakers of “Making A Murderer” Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos (who funded the docuseries themselves long before Netflix agreed to distribute it) have always said their premise was to follow Avery's murder trial as it unfolded for their cameras based on who they had access to. They have always said they were not there to investigate the crime nor to take a side, but to document the process of the justice system as it happened in front of them. But Ricciardi and Demos came under intense criticism by those who thought they left out the most important details of the case. Now a new docu-series “Convicting A Murder” streaming on The Daily Wire website seeks to re-open the case file and show viewers what was missing. Join us as we review this engaging new series and look back on our original coverage of the original show. Real Crime Profile’s very first ever podcast was about Teresa’s murder and we have never forgotten her.

#467: Russell Brand | Part 2

We continue our analysis of the recent investigative reporting by The Times, The Sunday Times and Channel 4 Dispatch regarding allegations of sexual misconduct both in the U.K. and in the U.S. by multi-hyphenate comedian Russell Brand. We discuss each victim who has come forward (thus far). Jim and Laura talk about what they see in his behavior as a groomer not only of the women (and one young girl) involved, but also his manipulations of others which could include their families, his colleagues, and the entertainment community as a whole.

If you or someone you love needs help in the U.S. reach out to the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization: rainn.org

You can watch the first ten minutes of the Channel 4 Dispatch documentary called Russell Brand In Plain Sight here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ace3S61vyHk

#469: BONUS: 9 year old girl’s abduction in New York

A quick bonus episode to discuss the recent abduction in upstate New York of a 9 year old girl who thankfully was found 48 hours after she went missing. Jim and Laura weigh in on the behavior of the suspect in custody and if they think there was stalking involved in this case. While we normally do not mention the name of the offender if we can help it, in this case it is important to identify him — Craig Nelson Ross, Jr., 47 of Ballston Spa, New York — in the event there are more victims or near miss offenses out there unreported. If you think you have information about this case, please contact the New York State Police or the Saratoga County Police. We are not naming the 9 year old victim (though we know her name has been all over the news) because her parents have expressed the desire to have her life go back to being as normal as possible after this terrifying event. Join us as we discuss this case that is every parents’ nightmare. This is a fast moving story and more background information on the suspect is coming forth even as we post this episode.
