#437: Who Killed 3 Young Sisters in Texas | Part 1

On a hot summer night last July in a small town in east Texas, sisters Zi’Ariel Robinson-Oliver, 9, A’Miyah Hughes, 8, and Te’Mari Robinson-Oliver, 5, were reported missing by their babysitter. Their mother Shommaonique Oliver-Wickerson rushed home from work to find the Cass County Sheriff’s office, Texas Parks and Wildlife, volunteer firefighters, neighbors and family members searching the surrounding area for her little daughters. What happened next was every mother’s worst nightmare.

At 2 AM the sisters were found dead in a pond on a neighboring private property, two hundred yards from their home. Officials allowed the family and community to believe the deaths were accidental drownings. Now nearly nine months later, the Cass County DA’s office is changing their tune and has stunningly announced that the autopsy reports indicate the girls were all strangled, possibly beaten and potentially sexually assaulted. Why has it taken so long to get the truth? What is being done to find the murderer of these precious girls? The case is now in the hands of the Texas Rangers.

“Making A Murderer” the Netflix documentary about the 2005 murder of 25 year old Teresa Halbach near Green Bay, Wisconsin and the prime suspect in her killing Steven Avery took the world by storm in 2015 launching many viewer theories and passionate camps as to what may have really happened to the young photographer and who was responsible for her horrific murder. Avery, who had been wrongfully convicted of a violent sexual assault in 1985 was exonerated when DNA evidence proved another man was the true offender, and released in 2003 after serving 18 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Just two years later, Steven Avery would again be the focus of an investigation, this time for Teresa's murder. The filmmakers of “Making A Murderer” Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos (who funded the docuseries themselves long before Netflix agreed to distribute it) have always said their premise was to follow Avery's murder trial as it unfolded for their cameras based on who they had access to. They have always said they were not there to investigate the crime nor to take a side, but to document the process of the justice system as it happened in front of them. But Ricciardi and Demos came under intense criticism by those who thought they left out the most important details of the case. Now a new docu-series “Convicting A Murder” streaming on The Daily Wire website seeks to re-open the case file and show viewers what was missing. Join us as we review this engaging new series and look back on our original coverage of the original show. Real Crime Profile’s very first ever podcast was about Teresa’s murder and we have never forgotten her.

#458: Breaking News in the Long Island Serial Killing Case

Today we give an update on the newly identified remains of a woman found near the Fire Island Beach area of Long Island, New York. News broke on Friday August 4th when DA Raymond Tierney called a press conference at very short notice to report that this woman, previously known to police as "Fire Island Jane Doe" had been positively identified as Karen Vergata. She is one of at least eighteen other victims murdered in the Gilgo Beach/Jones Beach/Fire Island vicinity. Karen went missing on Valentine’s Day in 1996, last seen in Manhattan which is at least sixty miles away from where some of her remains were discovered. Is she connected to Rex Heuermann, the suspect arrested on July 13th charged with the murders of Amber Costello, Megan Waterman and Melissa Barthelemy, three women who all went missing in 2009 and 2010 before their bodies were found along Gilgo Beach? Join us as we talk it out. Our thoughts go out to Karen's family and friends as they process this new information about their loved one.

Who is killing the indigenous women of Alaska? Spoiler alert, it is not that hard to figure out if proper investigations had been done, yet time and time again, these victims’ deaths are ignored, suspects are not questioned, evidence is not collected, autopsy reports are glossed over, known repeat offenders are not prosecuted, and on the rare occasions when they are prosecuted, judges are letting them go with less than a slap on the wrist. Joining us to discuss two such cases is victims’ advocate Antonia Unaqsiq Commack of Missing and Murdered In Alaska, a group that often focuses on violence against Alaska Natives. Antonia is Inupiaq from the Native Village of Shungnak. Antonia herself has had two close friends murdered by their intimate partners and since 2017 has devoted herself to shouting loudly to make the public aware of the injustices going on in her community. Antonia takes us through the deaths of two women in Kotzebue, Alaska - Jennifer Kirk and Sue Sue Norton -- who died under extremely suspicious circumstances and who need to get much more attention from those in power to deliver justice.
