Who am I?

I am a self-diagnosed True Crime junkie. The kind of person who lays his head down to rest to the dulcet sounds of Keith Morrison, so it's only fitting I would want to co-host a show where we talk about murder to an audience of complete strangers on the internet. My partner on and off the podcast, Elise Buedel, is equally fascinated with the grim, which is good...cuz it would be kind of weird if only one of us were afflicted. Together, our goal with our podcast is to inform, entertain, and spark discussion. I have always been interested in Criminal Psychology and learning about the mind of the killer. When I was 16-years-old, a Criminal Profiler was a guest speaker in one of my classes. He spoke about his job and what a career path in that field looked like. I was hooked. I minored in Criminal Justice in college, but did not continue my education with it. Ultimately, I am just a big Crime Junkie who can't stop talking about it, so I decided to start a podcast.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

I have a True Crime podcast with my co-host and partner, Elise. We cover cases ranging from widely known, and heavily covered, to the obscure. We love digging into the story and trying to understand what makes a person snap and commit the most unspeakable acts of violence. Since this genre has no shortage of cases and content, it is important to attempt to keep up with any new cases that arise. We may not choose to cover that story right away, but we may store it in the back of our mind for exploration later on.

What is my podcast playlist about?

These are the podcasts we like to listen to for inspiration, from hosts who know what they're talking about. We don't enjoy podcasts that have a hard time getting to the story itself. We don't need to hear what the host had for breakfast or what their favorite movie is. Our playlist is curated around hosts who dive deep into their cases. Some are scripted, some are conversational, but all are informative as it pertains to the crimes themselves.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. MURDERISH

Why this podcast?

I love Jami Rice's storytelling style. It is a Narrative format, and very easy to follow. Many times, I get distracted while listening to a podcast and then when I zone back into it, I lose my place in the story. But with Jami, I tend to stop whatever the distraction is so I never miss a word she says. Not all of her cases are completely current, but I added her to this list because we gain much inspiration from her podcast.

2. Real Crime Profile

Why this podcast?

I love these guys! Jim Clemente is a former Criminal Profiler, Laura Richards is a Criminal Behavior Analyst, and Lisa Zambetti is a Casting Director for the show 'Criminal Minds'. Most of the cases they cover are pretty high profile, but I love listening to them because they offer such a thorough analysis of the crimes and perpetrators; and because Jim and Laura are experts in the field, I find them fascinating to listen to.

3. Real Life Real Crime

Why this podcast?

Host, Woody Overton, is a retired officer, and each episode he dives into real cases he was involved in. He mixes facts of the cases with his own opinions on them so you get his perspective. I first heard about him when he was interviewed on a Dateline episode. Out of desperation, a family reached out to him for help. Their loved one had been murdered and so many years had gone by. They didn't feel that police were investigating fully, so the family asked Woody to talk about it on his podcast and, because of him, there were new leads uncovered and the murder was solved. I love that he oftentimes does a call to action. He is a real Victim's Advocate. I added this podcast to my list because, in addition to these episodes, he also releases RLRC Daily, multiple times a week. In these episodes, he and 2 co-hosts highlight multiple stories that may or may not be in the headlines, but are all current and up-to-date. Very informative.

Twisted, gruesome, sometimes funny, but always true: Real Life Real Crime is a multi-award-winning weekly true crime podcast hosted by Woody Overton. Known for his appearances on Dateline, Woody takes listeners on deep dives into cases he has personally worked, offering a unique and exclusive perspective that only he can share. His extensive knowledge from real cases, along with his captivating storytelling ability, has led to what the news media and loyal fans describe as a “cult following.”

In addition to “Real Life Real Crime,” Woody is dedicated to solving cold cases and actively works with families seeking justice and closure. His commitment to these efforts is reflected in his development of new projects, including "#JusticeFor", highlighting the importance of advocacy in the true crime community, and dives into intense tales in “Scorched,” which examines cases of severe miscarriages of justice while offering insights into the complexities of the legal system. In addition Woody hosts “True Crime Time For,” which is co-hosted by his wife, Cyndi Overton. Together, they explore intriguing stories, bringing their unique dynamic to the table. Join Woody and Cyndi on this riveting journey as they uncover the truth behind real-life crime.

4. DISGRACELAND

Why this podcast?

This series isn't necessarily made of all current cases, but each episode dives into murder plots, kidnapping attempts, and hostage situations...all of the most insane stories surrounding some of our biggest musicians in the world. It's like this whole underworld that no one knows about. I was first introduced to this podcast when someone made a comment on one of our TikTok videos, saying we remind them of "Disgraceland". I had never heard of the podcast, but decided to check it out and am so glad I did. The host's style of storytelling is compelling and takes you on a wild ride.

5. True Crime News: The Podcast

Why this podcast?

If you are interested in the legal side of cases, this is a great podcast to check out. Twice per week, they release episodes detailing the Headlines on Crime. They generally have a host and a guest. There are a few different hosts in rotation, and all of them, along with their guests, are very knowledgable in their field (oftentimes, the guest is a lawyer or reporter) and have interesting perspectives on the respective cases being discussed. There are a handful of cases covered in each episode. Some are widely known and others are lesser known, but I love hearing the details and getting their stance on them.
