Ways To Increase Communication With Your Athlete Daughter
Raising Elite Competitors
08/23/22 • 12 min
Communication between parents and athletes is important, there’s no denying that. But what if they start to communicate less?
Some parents conclude that this situation comes with age. As their children get older, they tend to communicate less. That’s true. Another reason why they communicate less is because we’re not asking better questions.
What can we do when that situation arises?
Dive in to learn about simple ways to increase your communication with your athlete daughter!
Giving The Opportunity for Your Daughter to Open Up
I want to share with you a comment from Nicole, one of our Elite Competitor Program moms, that she shared after working through our Powerful Pep-Talk phase. If you’re not familiar, it is part of our Elite Competitor Program, a mental training program for female athletes, and in that program we train both the athlete and their moms on how to have Powerful Pep Talks.
Here’s what she said,
“I love this lesson and the reminder of my role as a parent and to keep it simple. I'm also grateful for more dialogue that's opening up with my daughter, who came to me this weekend saying: you said to let me know if there's something you can do better to support me. And honestly, it would be helpful if you smile more at me. Even when something doesn't go well on the court, it makes me feel positive.”
This is a result of our mental training program. Learning is power. We teach moms what to say before, during, and after competitions and how to strengthen their mental game, how to work on their own confidence, because we know how it influences their daughters.
Their daughters also work on themselves through the athlete modules.
I’m setting it as an example of what happens when moms give their best to learn how to support their daughters in a better way.
Two Keys to Know What Your Daughter Needs
By giving the opportunities to train her mental skills, Nicole’s daughter learned to be vocal and specific about what she needs from her mom, and that’s how Nicole opened up this opportunity for her daughter to open up.
How can you help apply this with your daughter?
There's two keys here:
- Shape the environment. When we talk about shaping the environment, we're talking about your verbal and your nonverbal communication with your daughter. We teach things that we can say to build long term confidence in your daughter and how you show up for her as her role model. So, make sure that you’re investing in opportunities to learn how to shape the environment for your daughter, and not just guessing what to do.
- Provide the opportunities. Provide opportunities for her not just outwardly, but also inwardly. Give her the opportunity to understand what she needs from you to get where she wants to be.
Overall, a simple thing that moms can do to increase communication with their daughter is by opening up the opportunity to ask:
“What can I do to support you?”
“What is helpful for me to say and do?”
Good communication happens when you give opportunities for your daughter to learn how to advocate for themselves and how to develop those mental skills.

The 3 Non-Negotiables for Elite Performance
Raising Elite Competitors
08/31/21 • 15 min
Elite Performance...it’s what our players are after, and what we want for our athletes, right? Athletes want so badly to...
- have confidence from the inside out
- have consistent performance
- play to potential
- experience continuous improvement
- move past mistakes quickly
- come in clutch
And as parents and coaches, we want these things for our athletes, too. And it’s hard to know what to do when we notice those things aren’t happening.
But, sometimes it seems like the path to get there seems non-existent.
What I hear from players and parents is that athletes are working hard, getting extra reps in, training, and doing everything they can to achieve Elite Performance, but aren’t always seeing the results they want!
They feel like they don’t know what else to do, and they’ve tried everything.
More often than not, it’s because one of the following three pillars to elite performance is missing.
So, that’s what we’re talking about today!
To ensure your daughter is on the path to confidence and elite performance in her sport, there are three non-negotiables that have to be present in her training. They are like the three legs to a stool. The stool won’t hold up or be effective without all three!
So, let’s get into it.
We'll be talking about:
1. Knowledge of the Sport
2. Physical Training
3. Mental Training
The three non-negotiables to elite performance. Knowledge of the sport, physical training, and mental training. Athletes absolutely need all three in order to reach their full potential, and I hope that by tuning in today you can pinpoint what might be missing and how to cultivate that as a parent, athlete, or coach.
Until next time, remember: “everything you need is within you already.”

BONUS: The Go-To Goal Setting Activity That Actually Works
Raising Elite Competitors
01/01/22 • 15 min
Raise your hand if you've made some new year resolutions already?! Spoiler alert - they don't work!
But you already know that... we've all been doing the New Year's Resolutions thing for years at this point. And honestly, they don't work because resolutions are often a convenient way to criticize ourselves. They typically are not building confidence in our female athletes or ourselves.
I'll be the first to admit that it's around this time that I want to completely overhaul my routines. Start a strict diet regimen. Overexercise, etc. Most of these are born out of criticizing myself for my eating and lack of movement over the holidays.
I'm not saying you need to abandon your goals for the new year or anything. But, I DO want you to be really intentional and mindful about what you choose to focus on as the calendar changes from 2021 to 2022, especially as it relates to our daughters.
Remember - Part of our job as moms is to shape the environment for her. Strict dieting, "all or nothing" mindsets around food and exercising, etc can model some behaviors that I see in athletes like perfectionism, being self-critical, and never feeling good enough.
We have a podcast coming out next week all around this topic - so look out for that.
I want you to do this one simple activity as you prepare for the new year as a way that both you and your daughter can be intentional together. This is actually the first part of our vision board workshop that we teach our athletes within the Elite Competitor Program.
Here's an overview of what I'll teach you in this podcast episode:
#1 - What is your vision for your daughter?
#2 - What is your daughter's vision for herself?
#3 - Share your vision with her! I'll go into specifics on what to include/not include in your vision and why it's SO important to share with her.
Having a powerful vision for your daughter and her having a powerful vision for herself is the first step... but it's not going to come true without being intentional.
Here's the truth: If you're not having conversations with her or about who she wants to become and surrounding her with people who encourage, inspire, and build up her confidence... then, the world will do a great job of determining who she should be and how she should show up.
The solution: She needs to see you do the work yourself by setting goals/visions for yourself and sharing your journey with her. It's really important that this is an inspiring journey and not you criticizing yourself and encouraging perfectionism in yourself and your athlete.
She also needs to be surrounded by you and others - coaches, mentors, other athletes - who see her greatness and potential and help bring her vision to life.
So, I want you to make it a point to talk to her about her vision, check in with her regularly, make it a point of conversation so you know where she's at. And then surround her with others who are having the same conversations.
That's exactly what we do in The Elite Competitor Program... In module 1, we set the vision, and then support the actions that are needed to achieve it by surrounding athletes with mentorship from us, accountability, and other athletes traveling a similar journey.
This is one way to build confidence in your daughter - when she has a powerful vision of who she can become and is taking the steps to get there.

Happy New Year!
