Raising Elite Competitors - The 3 Non-Negotiables for Elite Performance
play

08/31/21 • 17 min

Elite Performance...it’s what our players are after, and what we want for our athletes, right? Athletes want so badly to...

  • have confidence from the inside out
  • have consistent performance
  • play to potential
  • experience continuous improvement
  • move past mistakes quickly
  • come in clutch

And as parents and coaches, we want these things for our athletes, too. And it’s hard to know what to do when we notice those things aren’t happening.

But, sometimes it seems like the path to get there seems non-existent.

What I hear from players and parents is that athletes are working hard, getting extra reps in, training, and doing everything they can to achieve Elite Performance, but aren’t always seeing the results they want!

They feel like they don’t know what else to do, and they’ve tried everything.

More often than not, it’s because one of the following three pillars to elite performance is missing.

So, that’s what we’re talking about today!

To ensure your daughter is on the path to confidence and elite performance in her sport, there are three non-negotiables that have to be present in her training. They are like the three legs to a stool. The stool won’t hold up or be effective without all three!

So, let’s get into it.

We'll be talking about:
1. Knowledge of the Sport
2. Physical Training
3. Mental Training
The three non-negotiables to elite performance. Knowledge of the sport, physical training, and mental training. Athletes absolutely need all three in order to reach their full potential, and I hope that by tuning in today you can pinpoint what might be missing and how to cultivate that as a parent, athlete, or coach.

Until next time, remember: “everything you need is within you already.”

Raising Elite Competitors - BONUS: The Go-To Goal Setting Activity That Actually Works
play

01/01/22 • 15 min

Raise your hand if you've made some new year resolutions already?! Spoiler alert - they don't work!

But you already know that... we've all been doing the New Year's Resolutions thing for years at this point. And honestly, they don't work because resolutions are often a convenient way to criticize ourselves. They typically are not building confidence in our female athletes or ourselves.

I'll be the first to admit that it's around this time that I want to completely overhaul my routines. Start a strict diet regimen. Overexercise, etc. Most of these are born out of criticizing myself for my eating and lack of movement over the holidays.

I'm not saying you need to abandon your goals for the new year or anything. But, I DO want you to be really intentional and mindful about what you choose to focus on as the calendar changes from 2021 to 2022, especially as it relates to our daughters.

Remember - Part of our job as moms is to shape the environment for her. Strict dieting, "all or nothing" mindsets around food and exercising, etc can model some behaviors that I see in athletes like perfectionism, being self-critical, and never feeling good enough.

We have a podcast coming out next week all around this topic - so look out for that.

I want you to do this one simple activity as you prepare for the new year as a way that both you and your daughter can be intentional together. This is actually the first part of our vision board workshop that we teach our athletes within the Elite Competitor Program.

Here's an overview of what I'll teach you in this podcast episode:

#1 - What is your vision for your daughter?

#2 - What is your daughter's vision for herself?

#3 - Share your vision with her! I'll go into specifics on what to include/not include in your vision and why it's SO important to share with her.

Having a powerful vision for your daughter and her having a powerful vision for herself is the first step... but it's not going to come true without being intentional.

Here's the truth: If you're not having conversations with her or about who she wants to become and surrounding her with people who encourage, inspire, and build up her confidence... then, the world will do a great job of determining who she should be and how she should show up.

The solution: She needs to see you do the work yourself by setting goals/visions for yourself and sharing your journey with her. It's really important that this is an inspiring journey and not you criticizing yourself and encouraging perfectionism in yourself and your athlete.

She also needs to be surrounded by you and others - coaches, mentors, other athletes - who see her greatness and potential and help bring her vision to life.

So, I want you to make it a point to talk to her about her vision, check in with her regularly, make it a point of conversation so you know where she's at. And then surround her with others who are having the same conversations.

That's exactly what we do in The Elite Competitor Program... In module 1, we set the vision, and then support the actions that are needed to achieve it by surrounding athletes with mentorship from us, accountability, and other athletes traveling a similar journey.

This is one way to build confidence in your daughter - when she has a powerful vision of who she can become and is taking the steps to get there.

If you want to learn more about the Elite Competitor Program or join the waitlist to be the first notified when doors open, go here: www.kristinabreanne.com/ecp

I can't wait to hear your visions and what you and your daughter are discovering together!

Happy New Year!
Breanne (& Kristina, too)

Raising Elite Competitors - Overcoming the Fear of Success in Female Athletes
play

02/18/22 • 18 min

After my senior year in high school, I quit playing volleyball.

It was a shock to many of my coaches, teammates, and parents. Mostly because I was destined to play in college, somewhere.

There was pressure coming from all directions to be successful at the next level. It wasn’t a matter of if I was going to play in college, it was where.

Looking back, I can see how clearly one thing was controlling me (and how it controls many of the athletes I work with today!)

What is it? Fear of success.

You’d be surprised how many female athletes are held back by the fear of their own success.

Personally, I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to live up to the expectation that others had of me in their minds.

And it wasn’t until I embraced and moved past this fear that I was able to finish out my career as a successful (and happy!) collegiate volleyball player.

In this episode, I dive into what this fear is, how to spot it, and mindset shifts to help athletes move through it.

What is Fear of Success?

First, we need to examine what “success” is in the eyes of many female athletes.

Success could mean:

Being good (and maybe better than teammates/opponents)

Getting recognition

Achieving new levels or playing on higher teams

Being a bigger contributor on the team (scoring the most points, making the plays, etc)

These all sound like good things, right? They are, but in many female athlete’s minds, these successes can also mean...

Being expected to live up to a new standard, and fear of failure if the expectation is not met

Jealousy from teammates

More work

More pressure to perform

It can feel overwhelming and cause athletes to shut down before they even start, stopping them in their tracks and preventing them from reaching potential.

What Does Fear of Success Look Like?

For many athletes that struggle with fear of success, it can look like:

Hesitating:

Not giving their all

Quitting/Losing Motivation

Procrastination/Avoidance of Training

Strategies to Overcome Fear of Success:

Much of overcoming this fear includes shifting athlete’s mindsets and creating new thoughts and stories around their success. Here are three ways:

1. Realize that more damage is done by avoiding success

2. Understand that being great doesn’t mean being perfect

3. Ask Yourself: What story do you want to write?

There you have it. The fear of success is very real for many female athletes. It’s one I’ve battled as an athlete and still struggle with from time to time as a business owner and entrepreneur.

Raising Elite Competitors - How To Get Your Daughter to 'Buy-In' To Mental Training
play

01/28/22 • 21 min

You understand that your daughter's mental game is her biggest competitive advantage.

Whether it's to level-up, become more confident, or start playing to potential (or all 3!), you likely know that it's not just the physical skills that will get her far.

It's the mental skills that makes the difference.

It's what separates average athletes from elite athletes.

It's the difference-maker when it comes to having the skills and actually being able to execute when the stakes are high.

It's the difference between athletes that react to events vs those that respond.

It's everything! Maybe you know this, and you want your daughter to join The Elite Competitor Program with the other athletes who get it too.

But, she's not quite convinced yet.

Maybe she thinks it's like counseling and she'll have to 'talk about her feelings.'

How do you bring it up in a way that makes her feel like something isn't 'wrong' with her?

The simple strategies that we'll be talking about today will help open your daughter's eyes to the power of mental training while taking the burden off of you to get her to 'buy-in.'!

#1: Connect it to her larger goals

Ask her what her goals are.

People are much more open to feedback/information once they know we have their best interest at heart.

Connect "mental training" to her stated goals.

"You have really dedicated a lot of time to basketball. I can tell you really love it and want to go far. I'm here to help and support you in your goals. Because you've said that you want to play in college (or make the varsity team, etc), I think that the mental side of the game is something we can hone in on to allow you to reach your goals."

#2: Show her examples of other athletes using mental training

If you need a little more credibility, ask her who her favorite athletes are.

Google those athletes, find YouTube videos/Podcasts of them speaking on how they became great. Guaranteed they will talk about the mental side of the game.

#3: Have her listen to the special athlete podcast!

Leave it to me! I just recorded a podcast episode that is dropping on Sunday Jan 30th that is specifically for your daughter.

She will hear straight from me why mental training is her biggest competitive advantage.

No trying to convince - just put me on in the background and walk away! 🙂

#4: Release the burden of getting her to buy-in

You have two things that are 100% in your control:

-Shaping the environment

-Providing opportunities

If you're doing that work, then you've done your part. Keep showing up for her, doing the work yourself, and providing her the opportunities. I bet she'll come around.
