Raising Elite Competitors - How Our Thoughts Create Our Reality

How Our Thoughts Create Our Reality

Raising Elite Competitors

play

08/31/21 • 18 min

What if I told you that you could control the outcomes you get in life?

That by simply making one shift, you can change the results you’re getting?

See, the thing is that many athletes that I work with WANT something different - more playing time, better performance, to play at the higher level - but feel like they have no control over what’s happening in reality.

They get stuck in loops that keep them playing and performing below what they’re capable of.

Well, today’s episode is all about how to flip that script on its head.

In fact, what we’re talking about today is so important that we call it one of our foundational concepts. I taught our first foundational concept in episode #3 (the three non-negotiables to elite performance), so if you missed that, go back and take a listen.

Today is another key concept, and that’s: How our thoughts create our reality.

We’re going to chat all about how outcomes are created, examples of why this is so important to an athlete’s success (or lack of), and what athletes (and parents/coaches) can be doing to ensure they are owning their outcomes and results.

So, let’s dive in.

Here's what we'll cover today:
1. How Thoughts Create Our Reality -> The Thought Wheel

You will see how changing just one thought can change the outcome. That’s because our actions and our results are a reflection of what we think.

2. What We Focus On Expands
Have you ever heard that saying “the grass is greener where you water it”... I have a story about that to share! I see this all the time in athletes, and people who are “watering the weeds” with their thoughts. They are giving attention and care to their negative, limiting thoughts, and therefore growing them bigger and bigger.
3. Awareness Is The Starting Point
It can take some time to identify the thought that is leading to the outcome or result. But, awareness is key and the sooner we can get athletes thinking about their thoughts, the better.
4. Get Started - Challenge Your Thoughts!
Here’s what I encourage athletes to do: challenge your thoughts! Every single one of them! Now, really get honest with yourself. What THOUGHT are you telling yourself about your situation?

As parents and coaches we can do this in our own lives. We can also encourage our athletes to instead of focusing on the outcome or the situation itself, focus on what thoughts they are choosing to focus on around the situation.
I hope you see how important this foundational concept is!
Research shows that we say over 50,000 things to ourselves a day. Knowing that our thoughts create our reality, we know that athletes who harness this awareness and are intentional with what they are telling themselves have the competitive advantage over athletes who let their thoughts run wild.

Raising Elite Competitors - Playing Time Issues? Do This First To Help Your Athlete Deal
play

03/14/23 • 25 min

Is your daughter not getting the playing time she wants? Are you torn on how to help her as her mom?
Today, we’re talking about what you can do to support and empower your daughter, and how you both can use this situation to build her confidence.
Step 1: Keep the big picture in mind
I
t’s tempting to jump to conclusions, but when we do this, we only make the situation worse. Ask yourself - why is your daughter playing spots in the first place?
Too often, parents are tempted to allow their child to fall into a victim mindset around the topic of play time. Your daughter could start to believe that she’s a victim, and she might believe that there’s nothing she can do to change her circumstances. This could leave her feeling stuck.
But it’s these situations, when she’s disappointed or not getting what she wants, that turn into great teaching opportunities. As her mom, you get to help her develop her long-term confidence by teaching her how to navigate a tough circumstance.
Be sure to check in on yourself, too. Is the issue really about the play time, or is her play time pointing to a different issue?
Is your daughter:

  • Developing good work habits?
  • Setting goals for herself?
  • Working towards improving at her sport?
  • Navigating challenging situations?

Step 2: Know how playing time is distributed on your daughter’s team
Play time is an expectation that should be laid out by your daughter’s coach. If you have the opportunity, ask questions about play time before you join a team. It’s helpful to know, both for you and for your daughter, how play time is distributed and earned.

Athletes thrive with clarity, and knowing their specific “role” on their team can really allow your athlete to grow.
Step 3: Strengthen what's in her control
The biggest things in your daughter's control is her mindset, attitude, and her thought patterns.
When we help her focus on what's in her control instead of getting hung up on things she can’t control, then we’re helping her navigate the situation with actionable steps. If she gets hung up on negative thoughts, that mindset quickly becomes unproductive.

Another thing in her control is her contribution to her TEAM. Don’t forget, she’s part of a bigger picture. Reminding her to think of someone or something outside of herself is important for her overall mindset.
If a conversation would be helpful...
If your daughter wants the situation to change but she doesn’t know how, it’s best if you empower your daughter to have the conversation with her coach herself.
By empowering her, she has an opportunity to learn the skills to advocate for herself and navigate tough conversations. You can certainly be there as support for the conversation, but helping her initiate on her own is key.
You can frame questions for her to ask her coach, such as:

  • Can you help clarify what my role is on the team?
  • What do you see that I have an opportunity to improve on?
  • What can I be doing to help the team?
  • Is there an opportunity for me to earn more playing time?

Raising Elite Competitors - The 3 Non-Negotiables for Elite Performance
play

08/31/21 • 16 min

Elite Performance...it’s what our players are after, and what we want for our athletes, right? Athletes want so badly to...

  • have confidence from the inside out
  • have consistent performance
  • play to potential
  • experience continuous improvement
  • move past mistakes quickly
  • come in clutch

And as parents and coaches, we want these things for our athletes, too. And it’s hard to know what to do when we notice those things aren’t happening.

But, sometimes it seems like the path to get there seems non-existent.

What I hear from players and parents is that athletes are working hard, getting extra reps in, training, and doing everything they can to achieve Elite Performance, but aren’t always seeing the results they want!

They feel like they don’t know what else to do, and they’ve tried everything.

More often than not, it’s because one of the following three pillars to elite performance is missing.

So, that’s what we’re talking about today!

To ensure your daughter is on the path to confidence and elite performance in her sport, there are three non-negotiables that have to be present in her training. They are like the three legs to a stool. The stool won’t hold up or be effective without all three!

So, let’s get into it.

We'll be talking about:
1. Knowledge of the Sport
2. Physical Training
3. Mental Training
The three non-negotiables to elite performance. Knowledge of the sport, physical training, and mental training. Athletes absolutely need all three in order to reach their full potential, and I hope that by tuning in today you can pinpoint what might be missing and how to cultivate that as a parent, athlete, or coach.

Until next time, remember: “everything you need is within you already.”

Raising Elite Competitors - BONUS: The Go-To Goal Setting Activity That Actually Works
play

01/01/22 • 15 min

Raise your hand if you've made some new year resolutions already?! Spoiler alert - they don't work!

But you already know that... we've all been doing the New Year's Resolutions thing for years at this point. And honestly, they don't work because resolutions are often a convenient way to criticize ourselves. They typically are not building confidence in our female athletes or ourselves.

I'll be the first to admit that it's around this time that I want to completely overhaul my routines. Start a strict diet regimen. Overexercise, etc. Most of these are born out of criticizing myself for my eating and lack of movement over the holidays.

I'm not saying you need to abandon your goals for the new year or anything. But, I DO want you to be really intentional and mindful about what you choose to focus on as the calendar changes from 2021 to 2022, especially as it relates to our daughters.

Remember - Part of our job as moms is to shape the environment for her. Strict dieting, "all or nothing" mindsets around food and exercising, etc can model some behaviors that I see in athletes like perfectionism, being self-critical, and never feeling good enough.

We have a podcast coming out next week all around this topic - so look out for that.

I want you to do this one simple activity as you prepare for the new year as a way that both you and your daughter can be intentional together. This is actually the first part of our vision board workshop that we teach our athletes within the Elite Competitor Program.

Here's an overview of what I'll teach you in this podcast episode:

#1 - What is your vision for your daughter?

#2 - What is your daughter's vision for herself?

#3 - Share your vision with her! I'll go into specifics on what to include/not include in your vision and why it's SO important to share with her.

Having a powerful vision for your daughter and her having a powerful vision for herself is the first step... but it's not going to come true without being intentional.

Here's the truth: If you're not having conversations with her or about who she wants to become and surrounding her with people who encourage, inspire, and build up her confidence... then, the world will do a great job of determining who she should be and how she should show up.

The solution: She needs to see you do the work yourself by setting goals/visions for yourself and sharing your journey with her. It's really important that this is an inspiring journey and not you criticizing yourself and encouraging perfectionism in yourself and your athlete.

She also needs to be surrounded by you and others - coaches, mentors, other athletes - who see her greatness and potential and help bring her vision to life.

So, I want you to make it a point to talk to her about her vision, check in with her regularly, make it a point of conversation so you know where she's at. And then surround her with others who are having the same conversations.

That's exactly what we do in The Elite Competitor Program... In module 1, we set the vision, and then support the actions that are needed to achieve it by surrounding athletes with mentorship from us, accountability, and other athletes traveling a similar journey.

This is one way to build confidence in your daughter - when she has a powerful vision of who she can become and is taking the steps to get there.

If you want to learn more about the Elite Competitor Program or join the waitlist to be the first notified when doors open, go here: www.kristinabreanne.com/ecp

I can't wait to hear your visions and what you and your daughter are discovering together!

Happy New Year!
Breanne (& Kristina, too)

Most moms want the best for their athlete daughters. However, in the process, they can unintentionally make some mistakes that wind up hurting their daughter’s confidence in the long run.

These are all very common things that most mothers, including myself, have done. And I've seen moms do these things without realizing the long-term effects they're having on their daughter's mental health.

I want to go over these things and share them with you because almost every mother has made these mistakes. Don't be too harsh on yourself, either, because you're not alone in this. I've done these things as well, and I wanted to shed some light on them.

Why do we do it? I know we always start with the best of intentions. But what we intended to be beneficial may end up harming our daughter's mental health in the long run. So, let's start with what causes these three common errors and how we can avoid them.

Mistake #1. Thinking that your daughter will play more confidently if you just tell her to be confident or get out of her head.

This is something we're all guilty of. I'm sure you've had the experience of telling your daughter, "Just go be confident," "don't be nervous," or "relax."

Unfortunately, this will not always work. That's because telling isn't the same as teaching. You can't just advise someone to be confident and expect them to immediately look and feel confident.

Mistake #2. Not realizing how your own confidence impacts your daughters.

You may be asking what your confidence has to do with your daughter's self-esteem. The truth is, you are one of the most influential people in your daughter's confidence. And so your own confidence influences your daughter's confidence. Your own self-belief influences your daughter's self-belief. Your own mental game impacts your daughter's mental game.

Mistake #3. Expecting your daughter’s mental game will just improve with more experience or with help from the coach.

This is easy to believe because your daughter's coach is “the coach”. You might be thinking that they are in charge and that they know the quality practices, and how to prepare for competition to win.

Coaches might be in charge of their physical training but not the aspect of mental training. Most coaches are not trained in the mental side of the sport.

Athletes who focus on their mental game feel free to take risks and play their hearts out because they aren't frightened of making mistakes. They understand that mistakes are a necessary element of their development and success. This is something we teach in our elite competitor program at the University of Bath.
Confident and elite athletes are those who have followed a system and who have worked on their own beliefs about themselves and are very aware of how to shift their limiting beliefs, how to shift their thoughts, and how to turn negative thoughts into productive thoughts.

The overarching remedy to the three faults we've outlined is to take care of your mental game. You can't just tell her to be confident and hope for the best.

There's actually a process, training, and work involved for your female athlete to have a competitive advantage. So, make sure that you're very aware of how you're showing up for your daughters. You can't always depend on time, or on her coach to hone your daughter's mental game and confidence. You need to stay in your role to shape the environment for your daughter.
