Want To Be A Great Leader? Know Thyself
Quietly Visible
02/10/23 • 34 min
One of the Delphic maxims (engraved on the sacred temple of Apollo at Delphi in Greece), and probably the most well know is "Know Thyself". There are many interpretations, but you could say in a nutshell that it is about reflecting and developing a greater understanding/awareness of who you are, could be and/or who you ought to be, and in turn an awareness of others and your relationship towards them and they to you. Throughout her career, Dr Nia Thomas, has been interested in the working relationship: the dynamics between people and the impact both good and bad relationships have on individuals and their ability to effectively deliver their work. This led her to develop an interest in self-awareness, leader effectiveness and leadership at all levels which became the focus of her doctoral research. In this episode she discusses the experiences which led to her interest in self-awareness, leader effectiveness and leadership at all levels. She further talks about the 3 layers she sees as embodying self-awareness - reflection, recognition and regulation and touches on the difference between someone who just manages (the focus is on their technical skills) and others who manage but have self-awareness (whether it is inherent or one of the skills they have developed).
About Dr Nia D Thomas
Nia spent over 20 years working in the public sector across local government, the NHS and civil service, predominantly in Wales and in the last few years, moving to England. Her passion is for children and family support: ensuring that babies and children have the opportunity to thrive and flourish, supported by adults who care for, nurture and love them. She currently works as an Assistant Director in a children’s charity.
Throughout her career, Nia has been interested in the working relationship: the dynamics between people and the impact both good and bad relationships have on individuals and their ability to effectively deliver their work. This led her to develop an interest in self-awareness, leader effectiveness and leadership at all levels which became the focus of her doctoral research.
Her website (Knowing Self Knowing Others) was launched in 2018 and was accelerated by a need to keep the little grey cells active during the COVID lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 and the desire to share her research finding alongside her experience of the world of work, with others.
Nia launched her 'The Knowing Self Knowing Others Podcast' in September 2022 to take her research from academia to the office. It also establishes a body of exploration into self-aware leadership.

You Don't Have to Be the Loudest in the Room
Quietly Visible
04/04/24 • 22 min
Many people mistakenly think that in order to be seen and stand out, you have to be the loudest in the rooom. But that is not true. I have a saying that goes 'You don't need to be loud to stand out as a leader, but you do need to have presence'.
Inspired by a post I saw on LinkedIn, in this episode I talk about not needing to be the loudest in the room, but as a leader, the need to be visible and have presence. Something which many introverted women find challenging.
If You Want that Promotion, Establish Trust
Quietly Visible
05/20/22 • 15 min
This is the sixth and the final episode in the If You Want that Promotion Series to help you to be in the best possible position for pursuing your next leadership promotion, and this episode is all about establishing trust. Being trustworthy and establishing trust needs to happen way before you walk into that interview room. In this episode I share what you can do to establish trust so that your reputation of being trustworthy precedes you.

Generally, most introverts shy away from being in the spotlight and having attention focussed on themselves. Demonstrating their thought leadership is a good way for them to become widely known in their organisation and industry for their knowledge and expertise. If you hate self-promotion, it enables you to self-promote in ways that don't make it feel like it is all about you.
In this episode, Carol and Kate Pozeznik (founder and CEO of Quirk, a personal branding and career consulting firm), discuss and elaborate on their respective definitions of 'Thought Leadership' and how, as an introvert, you don't have to shout from the rooftops to showcase your knowledge and expertise. Kate also provides listeners on ways you can get started in authentically getting your knowledge out there.
About Kate Pozeznik
Kate resides in the US and left the corporate world five years ago to launch Quirk, a personal branding and career consulting firm that helps accelerate the careers of women executives and rising professionals who are seeking a life of fulfilment and freedom. Kate has been partnering with C-level executives for nearly a decade in a variety of capacities, currently by equipping leaders with curated career marketing materials, digital personal branding, and client-centered career coaching.
She has orchestrated several career transitions of her own, including a shift from stay-at-home mom to the tech world. In her search for the ‘right’ career, Kate gained experience across industries and functions. This includes selling new construction homes for a large builder; fundraising and curriculum development at a marine science non-profit; writing and event planning in academia; and developing marketing collateral and aligning research and advisory services to c-level executives at management consulting companies Gartner and The Hackett Group.
Kate is recognised for being a confidence booster, relationship builder, and steadfast promoter of authenticity as a vessel for life and career success. She has been an invited guest career expert on podcasts and social audio events, written business articles for career professionals, developed a library of how-to career guides, and regularly engages colleagues and job seekers through relevant, interesting social media content.
Kate is also a ADHD and mental health advocate, supporter of women and minorities, avid traveler, salsa and bachata dancing enthusiast, collector of mid-century modern furniture, single parent, solopreneur, former island dweller, exercise champion, and rescue dog mom.

I frequently speak to introverted women who have seen less experienced and less qualified colleagues get ahead of them because their colleagues throw their toys out of the pram and they don't. Because they don't kick up a fuss and make noise if they are unhappy about things, they get overlooked. In this episode, I talk about this and the negative stereotypes that are often portrayed about introverted women.
