Thriving in Medicine: The Physician's Guide to Doctoring

Bradley B. Block, MD

Hey there, doc. Welcome to the podcast that feels more like grabbing coffee with a colleague who gets it. This podcast is for physicians who are driven to grow—those who strive for more in their careers and lives. We tackle the challenge of sustaining personal and professional growth while practicing full-time medicine. Each episode delivers expert insights and brass-tacks, immediately actionable advice that ensures you leave better equipped than when you started listening. Covering a wide range of topics that impact every aspect of a physician’s life—in and out of the exam room—we help you keep advancing toward your best self. We’re diving into the real-life questions that make or break your days (and nights): How do I talk to my patients without sounding like a robot—or losing my mind? What’s the trick to managing my team when everyone’s running on fumes? Can I actually improve patient satisfaction without selling my soul? Why does work stress show up at home, and how do I fix it? How do I make extra cash and still sleep at night? Burnout, moral injury... is there a way out? What’s the secret to being a great leader—and not just the boss? Do scrub colors really matter, and what’s with the eternal pager saga? Oh, and we don’t shy away from the fun, messy stuff: getting stains out of your white coat, building a brand on social media, or figuring out if ditching the white coat altogether is the move. This podcast is about being real—because medicine is hard, life is messy, and you deserve more than survival mode. Let’s laugh, learn, and figure out how to find the fulfillment you’ve been chasing. Pull up a chair, put your stethoscope down, and let’s talk. You’re not alone in this.

Dr. Chester Zoda’s education company “Digital Doctor,” helps doctors build passive income with online courses. At the start of the pandemic, Dr Zoda was working 80–100-hour weeks and feeling burnt out and overworked. He wanted to spend more time with family but was unable due to clinical obligations. He wanted to find a way to make extra money, so he created an online course teaching digital marketing via Facebook advertising.

His first online course made $5,000 in the first month of launch and was featured on the frontpage of Oberlo magazine. He started taking on additional clients on-the-side, helping Ecommerce and Digital Marketers launch their online courses. After many requests, he eventually decided to teach his methods to a small group of doctors.

In late 2020, he left clinical practice completely to focus on the business we discussed today. He teaches healthcare practitioners how to create online courses. There are patients (and other clinicians) throughout the world who will pay for us to tell them what we say to our patients or trainees each day. What I think he has mastered most, is how to use the search engine algorithms to set up ads that will show up in our target audiences. How to make sure we show up at the top, which works as social proof that we are the experts we claim to be and thus deserve what we charge for our courses.

COVID-19 has turned the world upside down and although prevalence may wax and wane, we are going to have to get used to living, knowing that it is out there. We are going to have to develop new routines and habits in order to minimize our risk of getting it. We can’t eliminate our risk, but we can mitigate it and when developing habits that stick, simplicity is key, so on today’s podcast, we have internist, author, and habit expert, Dr. Monique Tello, who has previously been on our show to discuss her book, Healthy Habits for your Heart. We talk about staying safe in the grocery store, actionable advice we can give our patients to decrease their risk of COVID complications, how to work physical activity into the day and why we should consider getting a pet.

Dr. Tello is a primary care physician at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts and instructor at Harvard Medical School. She practices part-time internal medicine at Women's Health Associates, a small MGH-based primary care practice with all female providers that serves predominantly female patients. Harness the Power of Language When Discussing Weight with Stephanie Sogg, PhD

This was one of my favorite interviews. I was a fledgling podcaster at the time when I interviewed Dr. Stephanie Sogg, a clinical psychologist at the Harvard Weight Center. She had been quoted in an article in the Huffington Post that lambasted physicians for not knowing how to talk to our patients about their weight. Interviews like this were the reason why I started podcasting. I emailed her and asked her if she could teach us the right way to have these discussions and she agreed!

Talking to patients about their weight is fraught with landmines created by inordinately complex psychosocial issues. It is very easy to alienate a patient. Dr. Sogg teaches us the power of language and this has come up in other interviews since. Changing racial language from minority to minoritize and slave to enslaved changes the perspective of the listener. It subtly influences how that person is perceived. The same applies to discussing weight; when we change our language about body habitus to be less stigmatizing, it subtly influences the listener, be it our patients, students or colleagues. We also need to change the way we talk about food. According to Dr. Sogg, the only bad food has gone bad, tastes bad or is poisonous.

Dr. Stephanie Sogg is a clinical psychologist and an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School. She has treated patients with obesity at the MGH Weight Center since 2003. Dr. Sogg earned her PhD in clinical psychology from Rutgers University in 1998, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship with Harvard Medical School. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Sogg conducts research on obesity and bariatric surgery, and the intersection between obesity and addiction, and has published widely on obesity and related topics. She is an author of the Boston Interview for Bariatric Surgery, and of the official ASMBS Recommendations for the Pre-Surgical Psychosocial Evaluation of Bariatric Surgery Patients. She is the director of the Weight Center rotation for Behavioral Medicine psychology interns, and is active in national and international scientific obesity and weight loss surgery societies. She is currently serving as a member-at-large on the Integrated Health Executive Council for the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

After experiencing paralyzing burnout as a newly-minted primary care physician, Dr. Diane Shannon made the hard decision to leave practice and pursue a career in writing. Her focus for 20 years has been drawing attention to ways to address clinician burnout, system inefficiency, and patient safety problems. She is co-author of Preventing Physician Burnout: Curing the Chaos and Returning Joy to the Practice of Medicine, which was published in 2016. Her personal experience with burnout and her desire to support clinicians motivated her to become a certified coach three years ago. She now helps clinicians gain clarity on their goals, increase their bandwidth, overcome barriers, and improve their professional and personal lives. Dr. Shannon attended Williams College, Jefferson Medical College, and Harvard University. She completed training in Internal Medicine at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston and practiced general internal medicine before making the shift to writing and coaching. This interview was suggested by Dr. Tam Tiet, a family physician at Sutter Health so thank you for the suggestion, Dr. Tiet. We’ve spoken in the past about burnout from the physician perspective, but what can health systems do in order to address burnout? That was the topic for today’s discussion. We discuss the importance of physician retention and how we can accomplish that, addressing gender and racial disparities in compensation, retention and promotion, and what all of this has to do with pebbles in shoes. In this episode, Dr Bradley Block interviews Derek Beres, to discuss the intersection of conspiracy theories and spirituality, particularly in the wellness space. Barris explains how "conspirituality" merges left-leaning new-age beliefs with right-wing political ideologies, often exploiting distrust in institutions like healthcare. They explore how wellness influencers leverage emotional appeal, certainty, and fear-mongering to market alternative health solutions.

They also discuss how a strong focus on individualism contributes to the spread of medical misinformation and how social media plays a big role in making these ideas more popular. The conversation also touches on figures like RFK Jr. and the Make America Healthy Again movement, which advocates for food regulation while paradoxically aligning with deregulation-focused politics. Dr Block and Barris went further to discuss how physicians can push back by fostering trust, communicating uncertainty effectively, and engaging in social media discourse.
