Dr. Richard Ingebretsen, affectionately known as Dr. Rich to his students and colleagues, stands at the confluence of rigorous academic research and the boundless realms of outdoor adventure. With a foundation rooted in the sciences—evident from his master's and PhD in physics education from the University of Utah—Dr. Rich embarked on a journey that would weave his passion for the natural world with a profound commitment to medical excellence.

As the medical director of Salt Lake County's Sheriff's Search and Rescue, Dr. Rich has been the guiding light in countless rescue operations, bringing his medical expertise to the most challenging terrains and situations. His commitment to environmental conservation and education extends beyond his medical endeavors; he is the founder of the Glen Canyon Institute and serves as the vice chair of the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, advocating for the preservation of Utah's wild spaces.
Dr. Rich's entrepreneurial spirit shines through Riverbound Adventures, an educational river trip company he owns, which combines his love for adventure with his dedication to teaching wilderness medicine. This endeavor encapsulates his belief in the importance of practical knowledge, survival skills, and environmental stewardship.
Beyond his accolades and professional roles, Dr. Rich is a mentor, a storyteller, and a lifelong learner. His approachable demeanor and infectious enthusiasm for both medicine and the outdoors have inspired a generation of medical professionals to look beyond the walls of hospitals and clinics and see the world as a vast classroom.
In every lecture, podcast appearance, and river expedition, Dr. Richard Ingebretsen embodies the spirit of wilderness medicine—a field where preparation meets improvisation, and where every moment is an opportunity to teach, learn, and thrive in the great outdoors.
