In this installment of the Gopher Coffee Shop podcast, Extension educators Ryan Miller and Brad Carlson sit down with Tim Arlt, who has a long history with Extension serving in roles as Extension Agent, Extension Educator, Regional Educator, and Program Leader. We learn how Tim got his start working in the ag industry as a crop consultant and how a pesticide poisoning while scouting potatoes led him to a career with Extension. Tim talks about how Extension and agriculture have changed over his long and bountiful career with Extension in Minnesota. We both had the pleasure of working with Tim and wish him well in his retirement. Enjoy!

In this installment of the Gopher Coffee Shop podcast, Extension educators Ryan Miller and Brad Carlson sit down with Dean Malvick, Extension plant pathologist with the Department of Plant Pathology, to learn a little about Dean’s background, his history with Extension and to discuss diseases of corn and soybean in Minnesota. In 2015, tar spot of corn was first identified in northern Indiana and Illinois. Since then we have watched tar spot spread across the corn producing region of the U.S. Most recently tar spot of corn was confirmed in Minnesota and in this installment of the Gopher Coffee Shop podcast, we chat with Dean about this disease and its potential to affect Minnesota’s corn production. In this installment of the Gopher Coffee Shop podcast, Extension educators Ryan Miller and Brad Carlson sit down with Jochum Wiersma, University of Minnesota Extension Small Grain Specialist. Jochum was trained in plant breeding under Dr. Bob Busch and started with Extension as a small grains specialist in Crookston during the scab years of the early 1990’s. Jochum talks about the history of small grain production in the state of Minnesota and some of the often overlooked opportunities for small grain production. We talked about benefits from growing a small grain, yield potentials, and some of Jochum’s most recent work with hybrid rye and barley variety testing. Enjoy!
