In this installment of the Gopher Coffee Shop podcast, Extension educators Ryan Miller and Brad Carlson sit down with Jeff Gunsolus, Extension weed scientist with the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics, to learn a little about Jeff’s background, his history with Extension, and to discuss weed management in Minnesota. As Jeff nears retirement, we get a chance to reflect on how weed management and Extension education has changed over the years. We cover a wide variety of topics from atrazine and groundwater concerns, to bean bars and the Herbicide Mode of Action CD-ROM. We also get to learn about Jeff’s future plans as he enters retirement. In this installment of the Gopher Coffee Shop podcast, Extension educators Ryan Miller and Brad Carlson sit down with Dr. Michael Walsh, a Weed Scientist with the University of Sydney in Australia. A special thanks to goes out our colleagues at Iowa State for hosting Michael and facilitating this podcast. Michael was on-hand to talk about harvest weed seed control (HWSC) and to demonstrate combine setup for HWSC. In this podcast we spent some time talking about Australian Agriculture, herbicide resistance in weeds, and the need for alternative weed management tactics. We talked about use of chaff carts, chaff lining and tramlining, bale direct systems, and impact mills for weed management. Enjoy!

In this installment of the Gopher Coffee Shop podcast, Extension educators Ryan Miller and Brad Carlson sit down with Fabián Fernández, Extension nutrient management specialist with the Department of Soil Water and Climate, to learn a little about Fabián’s background and to discuss urea use in Minnesota. Did you know that urea has surpassed anhydrous ammonia as Minnesota’s primary nitrogen source for crop fertility? We discuss urea application timings, current climate trends and implications for urea use, and urea loss processes. It was an interesting discussion and by the end of the podcast you should better understand efficient and effective use of urea as a nitrogen source. Enjoy!

We learn how Tim got his start working in the ag industry as a crop consultant and how a pesticide poisoning while scouting potatoes led him to a career with Extension. Tim talks about how Extension and agriculture have changed over his long and bountiful career with Extension in Minnesota. We both had the pleasure of working with Tim and wish him well in his retirement. Enjoy!
