Changing the Narrative with Gethin Jones - 304
The Speaking Club: Mastering the Art of Public Speaking
11/14/24 • 60 min
Trigger Warning - this show briefly discusses difficult topics including self-harm and suicide.
Gethin Jones is a survivor, but what few people would have believed, (including Gethin), was that he would also become an international speaker and thought leader.
Growing up in the care system, he spent a total of 8 years in prison, battled intravenous heroin addiction, and was trapped in destructive patterns that seemed destined to lead him to more prison time or an early death.
He found the will to change his life and a way to transform his own narrative arc, and today he shares his story and offers hope and a different future to others incarcerated and employed within the justice system.
Gethin leads Unlocking Potential, a company that works within prisons, probation services, local authorities, and charities across the UK, Australia, and America. He delivers keynote talks, workshops, training, eLearning, and consultancy, aimed at helping individuals, teams and creating a justice system that is fair and fit for purpose for everyone.
If you are struggling to overcome imposter syndrome, or finding it a challenge to get traction with your message, then listen up because you will get inspiration and insight from Gethin’s journey from inmate to international speaker.
Enjoy!
What you’ll discover:
- The story of Gethin’s transformation from inmate to international speaker.
- What prison pipelines are and how Gethin is trying to change the justice system.
- How he busts the myths to shift the narrative about reform.
- How he positions his talk and services to connect with a business audience.
- The mindset and practical steps that enabled Gethin to build a speaking career from one networking meeting in 2016.
- Gethin’s advice if you feel that you have a message that no-one wants to hear because it is difficult and challenging.
- How Gethin approached the first talk he gave.
- Why Gethin always approaches speaking as a pupil with something to learn.
- Where speaking fits with moving his mission forward.

How to Master Your Mind and Memory with Anthony Metivier (Part Two) - 159
The Speaking Club: Mastering the Art of Public Speaking
02/25/21 • 48 min
There are some obvious benefits to improving your memory if you’re a speaker, or you need to use speaking as part of your job or to grow your business. Remembering your content, people’s names, complex information to name but a few... BUT besides these valuable advantages that improving your memory brings, there are other positives that make it a compelling goal.
That’s why I am so pleased to have Dr. Anthony Metivier as a guest on this two-part show.
Anthony is an experienced memory expert, author, professor and memory improvement teacher, and is known as a bit of a rebel in the world of mnemonics, because of the different approach he advocates.
Since confronting his own negative beliefs about his memory, and seeing the amazing results he achieved, he has taught thousands of students in three different countries to achieve incredible results too.
What you’ll discover:
- The difference between encoding and decoding in relation to memory, and why you should try and exercise all your different types of memory.
- What aphantasia is and why Anthony thinks it’s a myth that causes a lot of unnecessary suffering.
- Why you shouldn’t be afraid to share your opinions, and the benefits of being polarizing to grow your audience.
- Why it’s important to know a bit of the science behind how memory methods work.
- Memory Palaces and how you can use them to improve your long term memory for learning languages and many other things.
- Anthony’s three tips for helping you remember your talk.
- How Anthony used his memory methods to remember his TEDx.
- How speaking fits into Anthony’s business model.
- Why changing the way he prepared for his talks helped Anthony’s reach and impact.

Karmic Selling - How to Win Big and Feel Good with Stan Gwizdak - 281
The Speaking Club: Mastering the Art of Public Speaking
01/18/24 • 57 min
Most of us have experienced sales ‘tactics’, and likely we’ve either recoiled against them and scarpered (physically or digitally), or have gone ahead with our needed purchase, even though a little bit of shine has worn off the relationship with the person that used them on us.
Our experiences have made us sceptical of anyone with something to sell, and allergic to feeling ‘salesy’ ourselves.
But whether we like it or not, we’re all in the business of selling something to someone, whether that’s ourselves as a speaker, our book to a reader, or our products and services to clients and customers.
So ... I guess that means you have to ‘suck it up’ and jump on the soft and hard sell bandwagon if you want to succeed.
Well no ... you don’t.
That’s because there is another way that will likely yield you more reward in sales and personal satisfaction than anything you’ve come across before.
And that new approach is called Karmic Selling created by my guest Stan Gwizdak.
Stan Gwizdak is CEO of The Kormac Group, a results-driven management consulting firm that embodies his clean heart and commitment to serving others. As a chief executive and Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Stan has spent more than 30 years leading business transformations at General Electric, BAE Systems, Honeywell, Textron, Aurora Capital, Goodyear Tire and Rubber, and more.
Stan is here today to talk about Karmic Selling and the successes and failures that helped him design his system and grow his company.
Whether you’re a speaker, sales executive, entrepreneur, you’ll discover why when you do good, even more good will come your way.
What you’ll discover:
- Why Stan believes that the traditional approach to sales needs to change.
- What made Stan leave a company just before he was due to take the top job.
- How he approached getting clients for his company without having a sales background.
- How he took a one man band to a business competing with the big consultancies.
- The problem that Karmic Selling solves for individuals and companies.
- The three biggest mistakes people and companies are making around this problem at the moment.
- The key ingredients of the Karmic Selling System and how it counters those mistakes.
- The first few steps you should take if you want to get started using the karmic Selling philosophy and system.
- How Stan is using speaking in business and to promote his book.

The True Levers You Need to Pull for Positive Change with Ruth Taylor - 291
The Speaking Club: Mastering the Art of Public Speaking
06/01/24 • 61 min
We are living in tumultuous times, we are facing some of the biggest challenges ever as a species, and as individual countries, organisations and people.
And despite the huge incentives to come together to work through these problems, we are in a lot of ways more divided than ever before.
Many speakers today are talking on some of these big topics and wicked problems, looking to shift audience perspectives and inspire them to get into action and make positive change happen.
To achieve this, conventional wisdom has suggested that we need to incentivise people to make a change by tapping into material desires because that is what society is geared to admire and aspire to.
But what if that isn’t true, what if there are more powerful levers to pull to effect change?
My guest, Ruth Taylor, is going to share another perspective on drivers for change that will help you share your message with more power and impact.
Ruth has worked in the field of social and environmental change for close to 15 years. She is driven by the question of how more people can be encouraged to think, feel and act differently when it comes to the multiple and interconnected challenges we are experiencing globally.
Currently, Ruth splits her time between working for the Common Cause Foundation, a small not-for-project working to rebalance the values we see championed in our cultures, and as a freelance narrative strategist, supporting a range of different organisations from NGOs to cultural institutions to consider how their work could help shift harmful narratives towards more regenerative and just alternatives. Ruth also loves to write and her work can be found on Medium.
I know you are going to get a lot of food for thought here, so listen up!
What you’ll discover:
- Ruth’s journey into social change.
- What ‘narrative change’ is all about.
- How the common cause foundation came into being.
- The distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic values
- Why leveraging intrinsic values is more powerful than extrinsic values.
- How you should use intrinsic value led messaging to grab attention in the corporate world.
- What ‘woke’ capitalism is and whether it’s a good thing.
- Tips for speakers to make their message more transformational.
- The values 101 training course and what you can do next.

How to Make Your Audience Care and Create Lightbulb Moments - 078
The Speaking Club: Mastering the Art of Public Speaking
07/11/19 • 23 min
Most of us that speak in public have a relatively high level of expertise in the topic we’re presenting on...and that is how it should be. But therein lies a risk and an issue that has turned many potentially scintillating talks into snooze fests.
Depending on our experience as a speaker, the context in which we’re speaking and our own level of insecurities, there is sometimes an overwhelming desire to ‘prove’ ourselves and show how much we know. (Trust me I’ve been there before!) The trouble is that this is often at the expense of engaging our audience and getting our message across.
Here I’m going to share my three top tips to help you avoid the ‘expert’ trap, so that you land your message and create light bulb moments for your audience.
Enjoy!
What this episode covers:
- The shift in thinking that will transform your speaking
- Why common sense is ignored and what to use instead
- How to keep your audience attentive all the way through
- How to simplify your message and create light bulb moments
- The antidote to boring big data

The Difference Between Inspirational and Motivational Speaking - 226
The Speaking Club: Mastering the Art of Public Speaking
06/09/22 • 13 min
I see so many people with a great story to tell and an important message to share getting deflated and frustrated after their talks.
Even after people in the audience come up after and say...
“that was so inspirational ... thank you”
They get upset and frustrated because despite being inspired, no-one takes action.
And when that happens it leads to the inevitable question.
What am I doing wrong?
The problem is that so many people confuse being ‘inspirational’ with being ‘motivational’. But being inspirational isn’t enough.
Your talk also needs to create the desire in your audience to do something. Which is what ‘motivational’ actually means.
And that’s what this show will help you to do.
Enjoy!
What you’ll learn:
- The difference between inspirational and motivational.
- The three things you need to do to make a story motivational.
- How you make a story matter to your audience.
- What levers you have to pull to get them into action.
- How you take an inspirational talk and make it motivational.
- Why you need a deep understanding of your audience to make this work.
And more!!

The Speaking Club: Mastering the Art of Public Speaking
09/15/22 • 60 min
Over my career, I’ve worked with lots of scientists, IT specialists and engineers, and I know that sometimes it can be challenging to communicate complicated concepts and ideas in a way that’s simple enough for your audience to understand. However, those people who can do this successfully stand out from the crowd and are sought after as speakers and leaders.
That’s why in this insights episode, I’ve reached into the archives and picked extracts from my episodes tackling this issue, alongside those from other experts spanning the disciplines of science, engineering and law who have developed a reputation, or had success in making the complex compelling to the layperson.
You’re going to get ideas, tools and techniques for making your presentations scintillating and accessible for audiences, even if the information you’re sharing is highly technical.
Enjoy!

Karin Layton:
- How facts and technical details can get in the way of the message.

- What makes a great speaker.
Katherine Brooke-Mackenzie:
- The importance of having a structure, frameworks and stories
- How humour can help with taboo topics.

Why You Are Shackled by Self-Doubt and How to Break Free - 300
The Speaking Club: Mastering the Art of Public Speaking
10/10/24 • 42 min
This show was prompted by the question of a podcast listener, but reflected a recurring issue with people that I work with.
My clients have written great books, become accomplished experts in their field and have a big message to share, but when it comes to sharing their views in person or on stage, a number of them begin to doubt themselves.
It shows up in the content they share and how they share it, and it will end up undermining their authority, authenticity and the value and credibility of their message in the eyes of the audience.
It also surfaces in the way that they approach gig outreach, sometimes making assumptions and barricading doors before they’ve even attempted to open them.
Fortunately, I’m able to help them deal with this, and I want to help you too.
That’s why in this show, I’m going to share some ideas of why this might be happening based on my experience of working with many, many speakers, some new perspectives and some practical tools to get you out of the shackles of self-doubt.
I want you to be bold, audacious and confident in sharing your message!
Enjoy!
What you’ll learn:
- The recurring problem that a listener and others have with self-doubt.
- Why the vessel shouldn’t matter when it comes to good ideas.
- What we have in common with Eddie Brock.
- How ‘bad stories’ destroy your dreams.
- The power in harnessing your imagination.
- How self-doubt shows up in your speaking
- Actions to master your mindset.
- Why you can’t tell anyone anything.
- The power of unreasonable excitement.
- The importance of congruence in all aspects of your performance.
- How to become the most powerful person in the world.
And more!!
