Pour Your Heart Into It: How Starbucks Built a Company One Cup at a Time by Howard Schultz
There is no denying the buisness and marketing genius of former Starbucks CEO and now chairman emeritus, Howard Schultz. This book is an honest look back at the principles that have shaped the Starbucks phenomenon. Schultz shares the wisdom he has gained from his quest to make great coffee part of the American experience in a frank way that feels approachable as well as awe-striking, regardless of how you feel about the coffee.
Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable by Seth Godin
An FMCG brand marketing client that I really respect and love working with recommended this as a must read for anyone in the world of brand and beyond. Purple Cow is another one that I’ve heard a lot of excerpts from, but not read cover to cover yet, so is eagerly anticipated on the book list.
Inspiring Leadership: Staying Afloat in Turbulent Times by Jane Cranwell-Ward, Andrea Bacon, Rosie Mackie
Combining the latest thinking on human performance at the turn of the 21st century with findings from the BT Global Challenge race, this book, recommended by a coaching client and podcast guest, demonstrates how to inspire others, sustain high performance and competitive advantage and keep a healthy work-life balance.
The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less by Barry Schwartz
This book has been a fundamental re-read for me, at any life or business juncture since 2010. It's a powerful reminder that whether we're buying a pair of jeans, ordering a cup of coffee, selecting a long-distance carrier, applying to college, or choosing a doctor everyday decisions—both big and small—have become increasingly complex due to the overwhelming abundance of choice with which we are presented. This book offers eleven practical steps on how to limit choices to a manageable number, have the discipline to focus on those that are important and ignore the rest, and ultimately derive greater satisfaction from the choices you have to make.
Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decision by Dan Ariely
In a similar vein to The Paradox of Choice, this book addresses why smart people make irrational decisions every day: Why can a 50p aspi

Growth Hacker Marketing: A Primer on the Future of PR, Marketing and Advertising Kindle Edition by Ryan Holiday
It maybe fairly old by this point (8 years at time of writing) but by no means is this book out of date. When I was in tech start up world, this was my bible. If you've got a marketing budget of closer to zero than squillions, how are you supposed to create a movement around your product or service? How can you get to your first thousand - or million - clients?
Although written with SaaS founders in mind, I strongly believe there is something here for every person with marketing in their remit.
Clients From Hell: A collection of anonymously-contributed client horror stories from designers by Anonymous
A cult phenomenon among those who work in graphic, print and web design — and those lucky enough to have discovered the namesake blog — Clients From Hell has been bringing readers to tears with its unbelievable and always hilarious anecdotes from the twenty and thirty-somethings on the frontlines of design. It'll help you realise which clients to appreciate, and which you should probably shed for your own good.
The Boron Letters by Gary Halbert
Series of letters written by copywriting legend Gary C. Halbert explaining the secrets to effect marketing. This is a timeless classic that holds true even though the thoughts were penned as far back as 1984. Fewer people appreciate the power of words than Gary, and it all holds true today. If words are part of your service, this is a must-read.
ReWork: Change the Way You Work Forever by Jason Fried
This has been on my repeated reading list since 2017, but it has never felt more poignant and relevant than following the disruption to the way we work, due to Covid. From the founders of the trailblazing software company 37signals (the people behind Basecamp and more) here is a different kind of business book - one that explores a new reality and way of working. Essential reading for anyone who wants to make lean, remote working a long term part of their business set up.

How to Move to Mexico Whilst Growing a Thriving UK Agency, with Tom Hardy of Manifesto Studios
Kaffeen Espresso | Supercharged Agency New Business & Marketing
03/01/21 • 39 min
Today I'm delighted to be joined by Tom Hardy, founder and creative director at Manifesto Studios. 9 years young , Manifesto is a self-described Brand & Communications Accelerator. They're a consultancy and design studio specialising in collaborating with challenger brands.
Their clients include Samsung, Red Bull, Vashi Jewellery, Savse (Where a previous Kaffeen Espresso podcast guest, Natasha Lytton, was marketing lead), Myla lingerie and Padella, one of London's hottest restaurants (which my husband looks longingly at every-time we're near the Shard).
Prior to Manifesto, Tom accumulated his years of experience at prestigious brand design agencies like Interbrand, Fitch, Rufus Leonard, Lambie Nairn, and more.
Having worked with Tom when I was the client, I can safely say that he's one of the nicest and most chilled (and yet ambitious) people I've come across in design.
I'm pleased to say that Manifesto Studios thrived in 2020. In fact it has adapted so well on the remote set up, that Tom has recently taken it to a new level, having moved to Mexico whilst continuing to lead his agency. I'm confident you'll come away from this episode inspired about how to make current circumstances fuel your passion for growth, rather than diminish it.
So listen in to hear answers to questions like:
- How did Manifesto grow in 2020?
- What client traits do you feel were most appreciated by the team during this trying time?
- And what traits do you feel the Manifesto Studios team boast that helped you to power through?
- Do you feel like moving to Mexico would have happened if 2020 had been a different story?
- How have your goals and ambitions for the agency changed, after the rollercoaster of 2020?

As someone who used to be marketing director at a well funded tech start up, I know the battles involved in getting the brand as visually relevant and polished as the product.
I also know many of my brand agency coaching clients dream of working with the next tech ‘unicorn’, but don’t know how to get an in.
Which is why I was thrilled to speak with Natasha Lytton, Head of Brand, Marketing and more at Seedcamp, Europe’s most prominent seed fund.
Seedcamp has supplied the initial capital to over 360 startups, including 4 European ‘unicorns': Hopin, TransferWise, Revolut and UiPath. So if someone knows how to work with a tech company, it’s Natasha.
Listen in to this podcast for answers to questions like:
- Why do you think brand design is so often overlooked as a powerful asset by tech start ups?
- To what extent do seed stage brands have budget for brand design?
- What do you see as the best time and way to approach start ups in your space?
- Given limited time and resources, should a startup prioritise product development or brand development?

What If You Didn’t Tell Anyone Where You Were Based?
Kaffeen Espresso | Supercharged Agency New Business & Marketing
11/24/20 • 48 min
The past few months have made all of us rethink work location. Whether you’re thinking of scrapping the studio, desperate to get back or want to book a one-way ticket to leave the country, we’ve all got new possibilities and challenges playing on our minds when it comes to what we say on the ‘contact’ page of the website.
In this episode of the Kaffeen Espresso podcast, I talk with Holly Griffin. Holly is the founder of Design Hungry collective, a highly successful businessperson, traveller extraordinaire. And someone I’m lucky enough to call a best friend. Holly is doing over six figures with no employees on the books, this year she has split her time between Singapore, Devon and Canada, but her contact page says "We're everywhere so you can be anywhere"
Here, I talk to Holly about her approach to business, why her client relationships are so enduring, how she uses geo-arbitrage to half the length (and double the profitability) of projects, and much more. This episode is 50 mins, so you might want to dip in and out, listen in the car or while you're on a repetitive task. But I'm sure you're going to get as much out of understanding Holly's unique approach to business as I did through the course of our conversation. So grab your cup of coffee and treat your ears.
