How Tim Minchin Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
09/07/23 • 57 min
Tim Minchin has created the most amazing, diverse and groundbreaking body of work. Significant to this episode is that he also co-created 2 kids with his wife, Sarah.
Tim was extremely generous to sit down with Hame and share some of his 17 years or so of dadding experiences and learnings. He explains how he tries to shepherd his kids rather than control them, his family's experience with neurodiversity and ASD, and how he applies reason, logic and in his words “anti-drama” to his dadding.
Tim is a real clever clogs and thinks deeply about, well... everything. And he is super honest. It makes for a chat that is both wisdom filled and thought provoking. But underpinning it all for Tim is the fervent belief that if your kids know unequivocally that you love them for who they are, you’re doing a lot right.
If you've been hiding under a rock for the last 20 years, Tim is a multi-talented singer, songwriter, composer, comedian, actor, musician, writer, author, performer, thinker and producer. We’d use the word polymath, but we don’t really understand what it means. He’s sold out shows all over the world, he’s appeared in film, television and theatre, winning heaps of awards along the way. He’s even won a bloody LOGIE! And his fine work is heard weekly in our households currently, because he wrote the music and lyrics for the phenomenally great and funny Matilda the Musical.
Tim has a tour happening in Australia beginning in October 2023 - and there are still tickets available!! He didn’t even tell us about this... and he hardly needs a plug, but you can find all his gig details at www.timminchin.com

How Scott Cam Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
09/28/23 • 56 min
We all know Scott Cam from The Block, but a few years ago, some words of wisdom from Scott Cam The Dad provided Hamish with some of the inspiration to create this pod. So, we advise you to Tools Down and listen in to a dad that takes his fathering trade really seriously... especially if it involves being a bit silly. And even more so if it means blowing off school!
Scott is of course the much-loved host of The Block, but he’s still a carpenter at heart. (Hame once borrowed Scott’s chisel set and WASHED THEM!! - Scott was beyond mortified). As a dad to three adult kids, Scott has got a tonne of hard-earned wisdom to pass on, and while he describes himself as an ‘old school’ dad - to us he sounds like a big softy that just expects his kids to be good people above all else. Hame loved this chat with Scott, and in it we get to hear a side of Scott that reveals a man who really, deeply loves his family and has some strong opinions on what helps a family stay close, loving and “good people”. Even without a bathroom reveal, it’s a great listen!

How Eddie Betts Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
09/21/23 • 54 min
He may have played 350 games of AFL - but as Eddie’s wife always reminds him - his job is only just beginning... for his kids, and for his people.
Eddie, with his wife Anna, have 5 young children, so pre-season training pales in comparison to the high contact sport of dadding that many kids. His lunch box game is elite! But as Hame learns in this fascinating chat, for Eddie, supporting a family is linked inextricably with a supportive community. Growing up playing at his grandfather's house, Eddie explains how he began learning his dadding skills from a young age, and how now in the suburbs of Melbourne he is fostering community not only for his kids, but for many of the young indigenous footballers that leave behind their support structures to play AFL. The benefits are huge, and it’s not just because of the extra babysitting!
Eddie might be a dad to 5, but he is also a role model to thousands, and the way he takes it all in his stride with so much grace and humility is pretty inspiring. He’s one of the AFL’s greatest small forwards of all time, kicking 640 goals and receiving Goal of the Year a record 4 times. But since retirement he has turned his energy and passion away from football to become an amazing advocate for indigenous youth, with a special focus on education and creating culturally safe spaces. He has also published two children’s books, My Kind and My People, as part of his Eddie’s Lil’ Homies series, which excitingly looks set to become a TV show on Netflix.

How Scott Pape Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
10/19/23 • 53 min
Scott Pape, or perhaps as he’s better known The Barefoot Investor, has been teaching Australians about finances for almost 20 years. These days he’s also investing heavily in his 4 kids - and he’s got some great advice for all of us.
Scott tells Hame about his mantra that “These are the good ‘ol days” and explains how it helps him stay focused on what matters most to him. He gives some simple yet powerful advice about what to do if you find yourself in financial trouble. And he helps Hame out of the deep hole he’s dug himself with pocket money.
Scott is of course the best selling author of The Barefoot Investor series of books, and his latest Barefoot Kids has been very popular in our households. However, what you might not know is that he is also now a financial counsellor. So if you find yourself in real financial strife and you give the National Debt Helpline a call on 1800 007 007, there is a chance you might chat with him and he or a colleague can help you navigate your way through it.
Big thanks to Scott for making the time to chat!

How Craig Foster Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
11/09/23 • 52 min
Craig Foster - former Socceroo captain, legendary sports broadcaster, social justice champion... but his most important job? You guessed it... Good 'ol Dad!
As a compassionate and thoughtful leader who spends much of his time helping those who don't have a voice, Craig talks about why justice and fairness are core tenets of his and how this informs his parenting. Fozz also discusses shepherding his kids though the teenage years and the almost comical lengths he’s gone to keep a watchful eye. And as a leading advocate in the multicultural and refugee space, he speaks quite beautifully about the commonality created by parenting, and that when you strip things back, what we all indisputably share as parents is a deep desire for our kids to be safe, happy and loved. We told you he was thoughtful!
Craig’s CV is long, varied and representative of his desire to make a positive impact. He’s got an AM for humanitarian services, nominated as Australian of the year, a member of The Australian Multicultural society, an Adjunct Professor of Sport and Social Responsibility and an author. Oh, and 2022 he was named Father of the Year, which as he describes to Hamish, he views as an opportunity to advocate for kids and parents in the multicultural community and the huge benefit that father figures can have mentoring kids who are not their own, something that Craig does a lot of himself.
Huge thanks to Fozz for coming on and talking so honestly, passionately and with such thoughtfulness. What a treat for us. And what a wonderful leader to have in our community

How Ben Quilty Dads - Drawing lessons from life and a life drawing lesson!
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
09/19/24 • 60 min
As one of Australia’s great contemporary artists, Ben’s compassion and humanity is evident in all his work, and so is his willingness to self-examine. So perhaps unsurprisingly in his chat with Hamish, Ben opens up about what shaped him in his own childhood, his thoughts on masculinity, the shockwave of sadness that hit him recently when his adult son moved out of home, and the unwelcome thoughts of mortality that followed.
Ben also gives us some fantastic practical hacks on how to encourage creativity in our kids, why it’s so important to keep doing it beyond just the cute years, and some great drawing games to play when you’re out to dinner with the kids. He also revisits memories of the magic and mischief his father would create for him and his brothers as a kid with the secret lives of gnomes that lived in their house (and inspired some of his latest work). And perhaps in a world first (for reasons that become self-evident) Ben gives Hamish a drawing lesson on a podcast. We promise it works out (sort of).
Massive thanks to Ben for having us over to his studio in the Southern Highlands. His honesty and vulnerability make for a heartfelt and wisdom filled chat.

How Dave Hughes Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
12/08/22 • 42 min
A legend of Australian comedy, Hughesy is used to dealing with a tough crowd at times. But it seems his three kids provide the best heckles!
Hamish was backstage at Rove many years ago when Hughesy and his wife Holly brought their very fresh newborn baby in, and it all seemed very grown up...especially for Hughesy! Since then, Dave has had two more kids, and away from the microphone Hamish has had the great pleasure of chatting with Hughesy about his very thoughtful and highly empathetic approach to dadding.
In this very funny, yet simultaneously wisdom-filled episode, Hughesy talks to Hame about some core beliefs that he is really trying to instil in his kids (and how they just tell him to shut up!). Dave talks about managing his very precious ego (which again, his kids rip into) and he also divulges a habit he definitely does not want his kids to pick up.
As always, Hughesy is honest and hilarious, but you’ll also hear that he is really attuned to his kids' needs, and we are super grateful that he was willing to share his dadding wisdom with us.

Wild Rule Breaking Season Finale with Dr Billy Garvey
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
01/05/23 • 74 min
In a double rule breaking season finale, Hamish goes over his 1 hour & 3 minute episode time limit AND talks to an expert! Our special guest is Dr Billy Garvey, a Behavioural Paediatrician at the Royal Children’s Hospital (Melbourne) and leading expert on childhood development. (And he’s also a dad).
As a wonderful surprise to us, it turns out Dr. Billy has listened to some of the podcast (which made Hamish blush) and upon Hames getting in touch with Billy, he told us something really interesting... that heaps of stuff our guest dads were stumbling across or bringing up anecdotally, actually had some scientific evidence behind it.
So we thought it might be really great to revisit some excerpts from previous episodes where our dads have dropped nuggets of gold and get Billy to explain the literal neuroscience behind it, describe why it’s great for our kids and help us all understand how small actions from us as parents can have outsized effects on our kids, now and for the rest of their lives. That’s worth going over an hour for, surely?!
Billy talks plainly and passionately about this subject and really, really knows his stuff. Although, as the father of an 18 month old, he is also the first to admit that he’s still learning some tough practical lessons everyday. We are so thankful to Billy for taking the time to listen to previous shows and sit down with Hame, and we think you’ll all agree what he chats about is both inspiring and practically very useful.
Billy has his very own podcast called Pop Culture Parenting which you can find HERE. Check it out, it’s great!
And that’s the season. Thanks for listening! The messages you have sent in have been inspiring, informative, heartbreaking and some are just plain hilarious. But the universal element is that everyone is trying to do better, by their own kids, by their parents, by their grandkids. And it seems, thanks to our guests, this show has perhaps inspired some small actions that might lead to this. So thanks for being part of the How Other Dads Dad community. We really appreciate it and will do our best to get another season out later this year sometime.
Big thanks also to Tom, Tey & Darce. And to all the Mums!

How Mark Donaldson Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
12/29/22 • 54 min
Decorated soldier, Mark Donaldson VC kindly joins Hame on the HODD couch to share tales from his dadding journey so far.
Mark shares his experience of trying to be available to his kids and playing and existing in their world, even if he’d just returned from a deployment. The guys discuss the idea that all kids have “their version of trying” and the challenges of not projecting our own standards onto them (that we have probably only come to appreciate and understand in adulthood!). They finish off by discussing the power of adventure in creating memories and the benefit of getting kids into nature to build resilience and problem solving skills.
Mark is a man that probably subscribes to the mantra “Deeds, Not Words” and is never one to blow his own bugle. But as Australia’s first Victoria Cross recipient for over 40 years, he found himself in a unique position of notoriety and influence. If you don’t know much about Mark, Hame does a lightning fast bio in the intro, quickly touching on his military record and also that he lost both his own parents at a young age.
Big thanks to Dono for sharing his stories with us and opening up about some really personal stuff.
As always - thanks to you guys for listening - There is just one more episode to come in Season 1 - and it’s a special edition ripper - make sure you subscribe so you don't miss out!

Wild Rule Breaking Season 2 Finale with Dr Billy Garvey
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
11/23/23 • 70 min
It’s back! The episode where Hamish tears up the HODD rule book, by going over an hour AND talking to an expert. And not just any expert, but leading behavioural paediatrician at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Dr Billy Garvey. Wild, right?
In the sequel to his awesome Season 1 Episode, Dr Billy has been beyond generous with his time and has picked some choice moments from Season 2 to unpack with Hame and look at the clinical evidence behind the parenting gut work. And then Billy further builds on this to provide some amazing practical advice for a multitude of different scenarios that we commonly face as parents.
But here’s the heartening thing, and this has come up time and time again this season... Billy reaffirms that some of the most important things we can do as parents is in fact the simple stuff. Listen to them. Love them. Be led by them. Not always as easy as it sounds in the rough and tumble of daily life, but nonetheless, something simple we can all strive for each and every day.
Massive thanks to Dr Billy for his generosity. He’s a busy guy (and new father to a second child!!🥂) So to spend so much time applying his wealth of knowledge for our benefit is deeply appreciated. And you can get way more of Billy’s knowhow on his very own podcast called Pop Culture Parenting. Check it out, it’s bloody great! And also @drbillygarvey on insta.
And that’s Season Two! We’ve had a blast knocking it out... It really is a gift spending time with our guests and soaking up their passion, positivity and wisdom. Huge thanks to them for their generosity, honesty and vulnerability.
Thanks to all you guys for listening every week and for getting in touch with your stories and suggestions. It’s continually amazing to hear how this pod has connected with people, often in the most unexpected ways.
Special thanks to our creative team - Darcy, Tom Cardy and Tey Vandenburg.
And of course, mostly thanks to all the Mums!! The brains behind most operations, certainly in our respective households! For us, there is no such thing as dadding without you!!
Hopefully we’ll see ya next season!
Hame and Tim xx
