How Tim Minchin Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
09/07/23 • 57 min
Tim Minchin has created the most amazing, diverse and groundbreaking body of work. Significant to this episode is that he also co-created 2 kids with his wife, Sarah.
Tim was extremely generous to sit down with Hame and share some of his 17 years or so of dadding experiences and learnings. He explains how he tries to shepherd his kids rather than control them, his family's experience with neurodiversity and ASD, and how he applies reason, logic and in his words “anti-drama” to his dadding.
Tim is a real clever clogs and thinks deeply about, well... everything. And he is super honest. It makes for a chat that is both wisdom filled and thought provoking. But underpinning it all for Tim is the fervent belief that if your kids know unequivocally that you love them for who they are, you’re doing a lot right.
If you've been hiding under a rock for the last 20 years, Tim is a multi-talented singer, songwriter, composer, comedian, actor, musician, writer, author, performer, thinker and producer. We’d use the word polymath, but we don’t really understand what it means. He’s sold out shows all over the world, he’s appeared in film, television and theatre, winning heaps of awards along the way. He’s even won a bloody LOGIE! And his fine work is heard weekly in our households currently, because he wrote the music and lyrics for the phenomenally great and funny Matilda the Musical.
Tim has a tour happening in Australia beginning in October 2023 - and there are still tickets available!! He didn’t even tell us about this... and he hardly needs a plug, but you can find all his gig details at www.timminchin.com

How Eddie Betts Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
09/21/23 • 54 min
He may have played 350 games of AFL - but as Eddie’s wife always reminds him - his job is only just beginning... for his kids, and for his people.
Eddie, with his wife Anna, have 5 young children, so pre-season training pales in comparison to the high contact sport of dadding that many kids. His lunch box game is elite! But as Hame learns in this fascinating chat, for Eddie, supporting a family is linked inextricably with a supportive community. Growing up playing at his grandfather's house, Eddie explains how he began learning his dadding skills from a young age, and how now in the suburbs of Melbourne he is fostering community not only for his kids, but for many of the young indigenous footballers that leave behind their support structures to play AFL. The benefits are huge, and it’s not just because of the extra babysitting!
Eddie might be a dad to 5, but he is also a role model to thousands, and the way he takes it all in his stride with so much grace and humility is pretty inspiring. He’s one of the AFL’s greatest small forwards of all time, kicking 640 goals and receiving Goal of the Year a record 4 times. But since retirement he has turned his energy and passion away from football to become an amazing advocate for indigenous youth, with a special focus on education and creating culturally safe spaces. He has also published two children’s books, My Kind and My People, as part of his Eddie’s Lil’ Homies series, which excitingly looks set to become a TV show on Netflix.

How Scott Cam Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
09/28/23 • 56 min
We all know Scott Cam from The Block, but a few years ago, some words of wisdom from Scott Cam The Dad provided Hamish with some of the inspiration to create this pod. So, we advise you to Tools Down and listen in to a dad that takes his fathering trade really seriously... especially if it involves being a bit silly. And even more so if it means blowing off school!
Scott is of course the much-loved host of The Block, but he’s still a carpenter at heart. (Hame once borrowed Scott’s chisel set and WASHED THEM!! - Scott was beyond mortified). As a dad to three adult kids, Scott has got a tonne of hard-earned wisdom to pass on, and while he describes himself as an ‘old school’ dad - to us he sounds like a big softy that just expects his kids to be good people above all else. Hame loved this chat with Scott, and in it we get to hear a side of Scott that reveals a man who really, deeply loves his family and has some strong opinions on what helps a family stay close, loving and “good people”. Even without a bathroom reveal, it’s a great listen!

How Ben Lee Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
12/22/22 • 59 min
Creativity and dadding combine in a fascinating chat with prolific singer songwriter, Ben Lee.
After a chance meeting between Hame and Ben, where the chat quickly turned to their kids, Hame had the good sense to ask Ben if he’d like to slightly formalise the conversation and record it. And thanks to Ben’s generosity, we’ve got Episode 10 as a result!
From his search for a different kind of life and love with wife Ione, to taking on the responsibility of a stepdaughter and his early missteps - Ben talks openly and passionately about his dadding style and journey. The fellas swap notes on fostering creativity in kids, but also creativity in general and how to, as Ben says, “make beautiful mistakes”.
Ben’s honesty definitely opens up a whole bunch of news ideas and questions that we haven't really covered in the show thus far, and we are of course super thankful that he took the time to sit down and chat with Hame.

How Max Gawn Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
12/01/22 • 57 min
Fresh off winning the AFL Grand final in 2021, Max Gawn hit the jackpot again three weeks later with the birth of his first child.
Captain of the Melbourne Football Club, five time All Australian Ruckman, and all round good guy, Max first became friends with Hame because they liked riding bikes up big hills. Now they share stories about their other passion... not the Melbourne Football Club (this time), but their kids.
When we recorded this episode, Max’s son was still only 7 months old, so he was super new to the whole dadding thing. But his insights are great, and it’s clear the same dedication and thoughtfulness that has taken him to sporting greatness is now being applied to his dadding.
In this episode, Max and Hame talk about the ongoing challenge of remaining present with your kids, how modern parenting fits with a career in the AFL and what gold standard dadding looks like to Max. Hame also has a bit of a laugh at the fact Max still thought he had a say about what goes on in his life, and that he could keep going to Oktoberfest. How cute.
Max doesn’t need much of a bio. He’s one of the AFL’s brightest stars. He captained Melbourne to their first premiership in 57 years, and has led his resurgent side with a humility and humour that sets him apart in the elite sporting world.

How Nazeem Hussain Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
11/24/22 • 55 min
Nazeem Hussain is stand-up royalty in Australia and a perennial headliner of festivals at home and abroad. But perhaps his biggest gig is being a dad to two young kids.
Naz and Hame laugh a lot in this episode, but Naz also generously shares stories from his childhood, which largely saw him and his sister raised solo by their Mum. He talks about seeking out father figures as a kid, and now as a father himself, the search for dadding wisdom continues (which mostly consists of him reading just the first few pages of tons of parenting books!)
Naz is a guy that obviously takes his dadding gig really seriously, thinks deeply about how to nail it everyday, and peppers Hame with some great questions of his own. The guys swap tips on how to safely throw a kid in the air, lament the sheer panic of being poorly judged if your kid acts up in the playground, and debate the Newtonian aspects of gravity as a metaphor for constant inescapable love. Of course.
Naz has created, written and starred in hit TV shows like Orange is the New Brown and Legally Brown, hosts a bunch of great podcasts, most recently The Pineapple Project, has a stand-up special on Netflix, has a released a brand new kids book and regularly pops up as a guest on pretty much every funny TV show in Australia. He’s also just a really great guy, and we massively appreciate him sharing his dadding stories with us.
Show Note: To cure Hame’s super sloppy hearsay plug for Naz’s latest special, HERE is a link to it - it’s on youtube and it’s free!
And lastly, at risk of repeating ourselves.... Thanks for all the lovely emails. We really do appreciate people taking the time to get in touch and sharing their thoughts and stories with us.

How Dave Hughes Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
12/08/22 • 42 min
A legend of Australian comedy, Hughesy is used to dealing with a tough crowd at times. But it seems his three kids provide the best heckles!
Hamish was backstage at Rove many years ago when Hughesy and his wife Holly brought their very fresh newborn baby in, and it all seemed very grown up...especially for Hughesy! Since then, Dave has had two more kids, and away from the microphone Hamish has had the great pleasure of chatting with Hughesy about his very thoughtful and highly empathetic approach to dadding.
In this very funny, yet simultaneously wisdom-filled episode, Hughesy talks to Hame about some core beliefs that he is really trying to instil in his kids (and how they just tell him to shut up!). Dave talks about managing his very precious ego (which again, his kids rip into) and he also divulges a habit he definitely does not want his kids to pick up.
As always, Hughesy is honest and hilarious, but you’ll also hear that he is really attuned to his kids' needs, and we are super grateful that he was willing to share his dadding wisdom with us.

How Hugh van Cuylenburg Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
11/10/22 • 59 min
As founder of The Resilience Project, a program that reaches 500,000 kids around Australia every year, Hugh van Cuylenburg has been talking to parents for ages. However, he’s the first to admit being a parent is a whole different story! In this episode, Hugh shares with Hame some bloody funny stories, but also some really raw reflections on Dadding. Hugh’s honesty is one of a kind, and it led to a chat with Hame that we are sure will leave many listeners nodding in silent appreciation of a shared experience. There is also some much deserved praise of Bluey!
Hugh began his career as a school teacher and quickly became focused on improving the wellbeing of his students, eventually leading him to start The Resilience Project. In the early days this was little more than him driving all over the country delivering his message of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness to whatever school would take him. But Hugh’s unrivalled passion for his subject matter, matched with his highly personal approach to storytelling has now led to his talks selling out the Sydney Opera House. I guess what we are saying is... he’s really good. He also co-hosts an excellent podcast called The Imperfects with his brother Josh and our good friend Ryan Shelton, which on the off chance you have not listened to, we highly recommend. It’s great. They are great.
Note: Apologies, we do not have photos of Jarrod and Nicko in the show notes.
Further note: Extra big thanks for all the amazing emails we are getting from both mums and dads. We love ‘em - keep it coming - Sorry there have not been many replies yet!

How Stan Grant Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
11/03/22 • 57 min
Proud Wiradjuri man, father of 4 and icon of Australian journalism, Stan Grant goes deep with Hame in this episode with his philosophies on Dadding. He shares brutal stories about the Australia that his father was forced to endure, and for which he was preparing Stan to live in. He describes the pain of a relationship ending and how protecting the children was central. And as a dad to now older children, he reminds Hame that this thing called parenting goes by so, so, so fast and to treasure it, because you don’t get another shot!
Stan Grant is a celebrated journalist, commentator and community elder. From advising on Australian strategic defence policy, to powerfully advocating for First Nations rights or his hosting duties on Q&A, Stan is constantly expanding the conversation. He’s published more books that some of us have read, and he’ll forget more stuff than Hamish will probably ever know. Basically he is super smart. But more than that, he is super passionate, and as you’ll hear, his approach to Dadding is no exception - it’s something he cares deeply about and we really appreciate his generosity in sharing some of his wisdom with us.

How Ben Shewry Dads
How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake
11/17/22 • 55 min
With his famed restaurant Attica, Ben Shewry is a guy that has made an indelible mark on the culinary world through his creativity, dedication & undoubtedly some really deep thought. As a mate, Hamish has been lucky enough to see Ben apply this same thoughtful approach to his Dadding over the years, and in this episode he really does get some golden practical tips on opt-in-parenting from Ben. We just made up “opt-in-parenting”... not sure it’s a thing? But maybe it could be?
In this episode, Ben shares some of his tried and tested techniques for connecting with kids through enshrining one-on-one time. He discusses encountering feelings of frustration as a parent, and being ill-equipped to deal with some of the challenges of being a relatively young dad. And in one particularly insightful moment, he discusses the power of forgiveness for not only your kids... but also yourself. It’s some deep stuff from Ben... but, it is also super practical and simple - and dare we say... delicious. Ben! What a guy!
Show Note: This interview was recorded before The Bear came out, otherwise we would have asked Ben a bunch of questions about that as well. And Hame would have said “Yes chef!” the whole time
As always - thanks again for all the emails that are coming in from dads, mums, grandparents and maybe-one-day parents. There is some heartfelt, funny and inspiring stuff being sent in - so from us, sincere appreciation for taking the time to get in touch.
