Hey Chaplain: The Police Wellness Podcast

Text a Message to the Show

Today I get to talk to Ginger Passarelli. Ginger is the executive director and founder of the Soup Ladies, a nonprofit that feeds first responders during crisis situations in the Pacific Northwest and around the country. She is also a trained chaplain with two police departments and two fire departments in the Seattle area.

In my conversation with her today, Ginger explains how this extraordinary ministry got started and what it looks like when they take food and love to police and firefighters in extreme scenarios, including fires, search and rescue, line of duty deaths, and Antifa riots.

Make sure you note her rare combination of talent, experience, and loving devotion to first responders. And listen to what she says it takes to start an amazing program like this in your city.

Blessings to our listeners in South Africa; may God protect you while you serve.

Music is by Chris Haugen from the YouTube Audio Library and by Winking Fox Music from Pixebay.

Today I have with me Teresa Gallegos and Dustin Dierenfeldt, the vice-president and president (respectively) of the Kansas chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors. Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) is an organization that provides both short term and long term support to the surviving family members of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

This episode will not be a detailed account of any line of duty deaths, but rather the focus will be on the survivors: the family members and co-workers and their stories of loss. Listen to Teresa and Dustin explain what their experience was like and how it impacted them. Notice how they use that terrible experience in a positive manner to reach out to other survivors in a way that most of us can't begin to understand.

Today's episode contains limited descriptions of traumatic experiences. Listener discretion is advised.

In this episode we talk about police cars! I ask these officers to describe the worst car they have ever driven and, look out, the venerable Crown Victoria makes the list more than once. We also find out that half a dozen patrol cars are no match for an Isuzu Rodeo and I ask, "have you ever totaled a police car?" Finally, hang on to the end to hear about a pursuit that turned out to be more than it first appeared.

This episode is a compilation of interviews, an oral history of life in law enforcement. Contributing to the episode are M. Boczek, D. Bond, P. Bowman, G. Dorsett, R. Miller, and J. Stewart.

Music is by Chris Haugen from the YouTube Audio Library.
