Text a Message to the Show

Today we're talking to Suzie Sawyer, the founder of Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS). She tells us how as a law enforcement spouse in the 1970's and later, she took charge and met a need that law enforcement culture was failing to do on its own. With her great sense of humor and purpose, she relates the inspirational story of how she built an organization from scratch that would memorialize fallen officers and take care of their widows and families.

Listen to how law enforcement leadership made the wrong assumptions about grieving families. And don't miss what Suzie identifies as the biggest obstacle to concerns of police survivors doing this good work.

Today I am talking to Paul Bowman who was the department range master in the 1980's when the Kansas City Police Department transitioned from revolvers to semi-automatic handguns. This transition from over 100 years of one type of gun to a completely different type, is actually one of the biggest changes in law enforcement history. In less than one generation, over 15,000 departments and agencies changed from primarily carrying revolvers to primarily carrying semi autos. And with change comes fear, resistance, and growing pains.

Paul and I made an effort here to talk about guns in a way that is accessible to non-shooters. I want people who are unfamiliar with some of these guns and their histories to be able to follow along, while still giving experienced shooters enough new information to keep them engaged too. And I think we did a pretty good job of it too, although I had a hard time reigning in my enthusiasm. Paul is just one of those guys with whom it's fun to talk about guns.

Today I want to share with you the story of Doug Monda. Doug was a Florida cop who, after being injured, suddenly had the weight of the job collapse in on him, driving him to despair and, eventually, to putting a gun to his head and pulling the trigger. Doug survived and today he walks us through his compelling story, how he survived, and how he then wanted to build a program that would be better than the mental health journey he went through.

Doug now runs a nationally recognized non-profit that helps first responders navigate mental health challenges. His goal is to teach cops how to survive first.

Warning: This episode contains discussion of suicide attempts. Listener discretion is advised.

GK Chesterton said, “A clergyman may be apparently as useless as a cat, but he is also as fascinating, for there must be some strange reason for his existence.” So if you're confused about what a chaplain is or what a chaplain does, join the crowd! Today we look at some of the misunderstandings police have about chaplains. Co-hosting the show is Captain Joe Grasela, who reads the submissions of chaplains from around the country.

Hey Chaplain: The Police Wellness Podcast - 031 - You Can't Shock Me Anymore: Morgan and Sarah, Forensic Nurses

Text a Message to the Show

Today we're talking to a pair of forensic nurses. Their names are Morgan and Sarah and they are the Forensic Nurses in a two different hospitals in the Midwest. A forensic nurse has special training to examine victims of sexual assault and other violent crimes. It takes a tremendous amount of professional skill, empathy, and personal resiliency to do this day after day and also, apparently, a wonderfully dark sense of humor.

Make sure you catch how these nurses approach the victims of violent crime, the type of victim they find the most difficult to face, and their relationship to local law enforcement, including a couple of really funny cop stories that you won't want to miss.

Please be warned: this episode contains limited, clinical discussion of sexual assault and human anatomy. Listener discretion is advised.

Today I am talking to Sheriff Don Ash. Don is retiring after getting elected three times as Sheriff of Wyandotte County, Kansas, and that came after a 35 year career in the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department. Don is a well respected leader and man of faith; he's approaching 50 years in law enforcement.

If you have aspirations to be a leader of an organization, perhaps the place you're at now or a different one, take a moment and soak up this wisdom. Moving from a merit or seniority based system to campaigning for a public office is a big leap and Don has a lot of wisdom about how to approach this transition. He also offers insight on how to navigate moving into a new agency, in this case from the police department to the top job at the Sheriff's Office.

Today I get to talk to Ginger Passarelli. Ginger is the executive director and founder of the Soup Ladies, a nonprofit that feeds first responders during crisis situations in the Pacific Northwest and around the country. She is also a trained chaplain with two police departments and two fire departments in the Seattle area.

In my conversation with her today, Ginger explains how this extraordinary ministry got started and what it looks like when they take food and love to police and firefighters in extreme scenarios, including fires, search and rescue, line of duty deaths, and Antifa riots.

Make sure you note her rare combination of talent, experience, and loving devotion to first responders. And listen to what she says it takes to start an amazing program like this in your city.

In the past we've have a limited way to talk about trauma and distress which was helped over 40 years ago when we began using the term PTSD in some situations. But this term doesn't fully cover what every first responder might be going through and I want to introduce you to some of these newer terms and concepts.

My guest today is Debra Fontes. She is a law enforcement chaplain in Sacramento, California, and trains other chaplains. One of the topics she teaches is the subject of moral injury. Moral injury is not PTSD, although it may occur at the same time or come from the same event. Listen to Debra as she walks me through the similarities and differences between Post Traumatic Stress Injury and Moral Injury.

Today you'll hear Debra give encouragement to those who have suffered trauma and challenge police chaplains to speak life and health into our officers' lives. Also listen for the distinction between feeling guilt over something and feeling shame, and what effect that has on an officer at home.

Jared is doing a great job creating awareness of the stress and pressures of police work. Even though I'm not in that industry and live in the UK, I'm loving following his work and the important stories he shares. May it bless many people.
