As I've often said, I wish exercise and weight loss would just get a divorce because the benefits of moving your body are so much more profound than the numbers on the scale.

But if you've been out of the game for a bit, you may feel intimidated or just don't know where to start. Well, I'm having a guest today who is going to share not only how to get started, but for those of you who are in it, how to level up your fitness routine.

He's been at this gig for nearly 20 years and has tremendous experience and expertise as we'll discuss. He was even my trainer back in the day. This is going to be a super informative episode, so let's dig in.

"Stop chasing the sexy. It's like your ex-boyfriend or girlfriend that you just kept chasing and chasing and chasing. Nothing good came out of that. It's the same thing with your fitness and your nutrition. There is no new thing. The basic stuff that's been here for ages, it still works and it's going to still work." - Dylan A. Conrad

Have you done something recently that you really wish you hadn't done? Did you get upset and hard on yourself over the thought that you could’ve done things differently?

As humans, we are imperfect by nature. We are bound to make mistakes again and again. Setbacks are inevitable; insecurities are always around. But really, that doesn’t mean that it’s the end of your journey towards achieving your goal.

Being hard on ourselves for things that we have no control over doesn’t really help at all; it only makes us feel worse. Thankfully, there is a certain evidence-based way to soothe our upset. Not only will it help us cope up with our imperfections, but it will also lead us to an overall better mental and physical well-being.

In this episode, Dr. Adrienne talks about the whole concept of self-compassion as she shares practices that would lead us into living a more fulfilling and productive life.

What you will learn from this episode:

  • Acquire knowledge about an effective and more durable way to soothe that actually works;
  • Recognize the worth of being self-compassionate; and
  • Discover things that you can do to live a more fulfilling and productive life.

“I want you to now dare to imagine a different story... You are never too far, too old, or too unable or incapable of making a change. So, I want you to dare to imagine that you can do it a different way... Engage with yourself with a self-compassion approach and get out there and live out your dreams, your goals, and make those habits that will help you live a more fulfilling, productive life.” – Dr. Adrienne Youdim

Key Takeaways:

“It [self-compassion] is actually an evidence-based strategy, not only towards better mental and emotional health and well-being, but also an evidence-based strategy to help achieve our goals and help effectively engineer habit change.” – Dr. Adrienne Youdim

“When we don’t approach our limitations and shortcomings with self-compassion, when we double down with the negative self-talk and self-hate, we are much more likely to fall off the wagon for good.” – Dr. Adrienne Youdim

“We are human, and humans, by definition, are imperfect and make mistakes. So, understanding our common humanity allows us to take a more self-compassionate approach to ourselves, and knowing that we're not alone.” – Dr. Adrienne Youdim

“Give yourself a roadmap to doing things a different way. Because the best way of getting out of a rut of insecurity is to provide yourself a roadmap towards doing it a different way and having a different outcome.” – Dr. Adrienne Youdim

Keeping a routine isn’t as easy as it sounds. Most of the time, we’ll lose motivation and the tempting feeling of giving up will arise.

We’ll feel as if things aren’t going the way we want them to be. Time will come that we’ll have thoughts of doubt, questioning if what we’re doing is the right path to take in order for us to be healthy and happy.

Nevertheless, we should keep in mind that a routine is one of the most fruitful investments one could have in life. Join us as we talk about its importance in today’s podcast.

What you will learn from this episode:

  • Understand that losing motivation at times isn’t bad as it is what makes us humans;
  • Discover the benefits one could have when a routine is present in his life; and
  • Find out how a routine helps us grow in all aspects of our well-being, especially with self-care.

Key Takeaways:

“Creating a routine is done so that when your motivation naturally ebbs and flows – because again, it will – you are prepared and you're not vulnerable to the effects of that.” – Adrienne Youdim

“We are, by nature, committed to the end results, not to the journey. If we don't have a routine, this fact will undermine us. Create a routine so that you are committed to the process, committed to the journey, and not the outcome.” – Adrienne Youdim

“Create a routine so that you avoid decision fatigue. You preserve your energy, and therefore, you preserve your power.” – Adrienne Youdim

She became a Certified Kundalini Yoga Instructor, Reiki Master, and participated in advanced studies in Ayurveda, Nutrition, and Naturopathy; fascinated by holistic principles where yoga, mindfulness, and nutrition really bond together with the modern lifestyle. This week, in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday, the conversation started with a tribute to Dr. Seuss. The topic then shifted to the universal psychological needs of agency, autonomy and mastery, which are related to our relationship with food and our bodies.

The conversation then referenced Dr. Seuss's book, Oh, The Places You'll Go and the quote “You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself any direction you choose.” This quote represents autonomy, agency, and mastery values which are important for psychological and emotional well being.

That’s why for today’s Health Bite, I’m going to discuss three important psychological needs that if you could understand and apply in your daily life, could help improve your relationships with others, with yourself, and of course, with food.

Join me today as I shed light on how surrendering to what you can’t control could help you redirect your attention toward the things you have control over.

What you will learn from this episode:

Learn about agency, autonomy, and mastery and how they affect our lives:

  • Agency: The power to make choices and have an impact on our lives.
  • Autonomy: The freedom to act independently and make decisions.
  • Mastery: The feeling of being skilled and in control of something.

Understand "status syndrome" and how letting go of what we can't control can help us focus on what we can:

  • Status syndrome: Judging ourselves by external factors like wealth or job title.
  • Letting go of what we can't control: Focusing on what we can control, like our actions and attitudes.

Discover the potential of agency, autonomy, and mastery to create positive changes in our lives:

  • The benefits of agency: Feeling fulfilled by making choices that align with our values.
  • The advantages of autonomy: Being able to make decisions that are best for us without external pressures.
  • The rewards of mastery: Feeling accomplished and motivated to keep improving.

“Surrendering to what we cannot control allows us to direct our attention towards what we can control.”

– Dr. Adrienne Youdim

Today’s Health Bite:
We have choice. We have choice in the way in which we live our lives. We have choice in how we treat our bodies. We have choice in the words that we use towards ourselves. We have choice in how we nourish ourselves with food and by other means. We have choice in how we respond to life's circumstances. And in the end, that choice is so much more powerful than the notion of control.

Losing weight is a common goal, but what happens when we lose muscle in the process?

When losing weight, what we want to happen is that we lose weight from fats. However, at some point, we also go through some muscle loss in the process. That can be so frustrating, and even discouraging, more so with the tons of fad diets circulating online.

But here at Health Bite, we don't want you to fall into those traps. We care about your well-being. We care about your success.

So join us on this week's podcast as we dive into a discussion on the best strategies for weight loss without losing your muscle. Learn why fad diets can cause more harm than good. Adjust your habits for the best outcome you can truly enjoy!

What you'll learn from this episode

  • Exploring strategies for achieving optimal body composition: Weight loss drugs, strategies, and muscle-to-fat ratios
  • Analysis of weight loss drug's effect on body composition and weight loss
  • The benefits of exercise during weight loss: Preserving muscle mass while losing fat
  • Preserving muscle mass while losing weight: Diet and movement as supplement

"No matter how you choose to lose weight—medications or not, be mindful of your diet and engage in movement. Stay clear of fad diets that can cause more harm than good, and remember that merely losing weight—merely shifting the numbers on the scale without intention towards losing the right kind of weight—is the wrong trick."

Dr. Adrienne Youdim

Today's Health Bite:

  1. All weight loss strategies result in some loss of muscle, and the more weight one loses, the more muscle is lost as a percentage of that weight loss. This can lead to a lower metabolism
  2. The diet consumed while losing weight plays a significant role in the degree of muscle loss. Studies have shown that a low-protein diet is not ideal for maintaining muscle mass during weight loss
  3. Exercise during weight loss is crucial for preventing muscle loss and promoting targeted weight loss from fat. Even modest amounts of low-intensity physical activity can be beneficial. It is advised to avoid fad diets that may cause more harm than good.
