Geektown Radio 226: 'The Morning Show' Director of Photography Michael Grady, TV News, Film News & UK Air Dates!
Geektown Radio - TV News, Interviews & UK TV Air Dates
11/05/19 • 81 min
On the Geektown Radio podcast this week as I'm joined by Matt from Entertainment Talk to review our week in tv, chat about the weekly tv and film news, along with a look at the next week on tv. I also talk to Michael Grady, Director of Photography on new Apple TV+ drama 'The Morning Show'.
Set behind the scenes of a tv station, 'The Morning Show' asks “what happens when the people you trust to tell the truth prove themselves to be dishonest?” The Morning Show follows the free fall of an early morning newscast in the wake of a scandal, and its struggle to survive in an era when news arrives in the palm of your hand.
The series cast is led by Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon, Emmy winner Jennifer Aniston and Golden Globe winner Steve Carell in a high-stakes drama that pulls back the curtain on the morning news. They are joined by Billy Crudup (‘Watchmen’, ‘Alien: Covenant’), Nestor Carbonell (‘Midnight, Texas’, ‘Lost’), Bel Powley (‘Informer’, ‘Benidorm’), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (‘Black Mirror’, ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’) and Mark Duplass (‘Goliath’, ‘The Mindy Project’).
Director of Photography, Michael Grady, has recently led the visuals on the star-studded series, and discusses what it is like lighting and filming a show within a show. He also talks about his experience working for television newcomers, Apple, and working with Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, who are stars and exec producers on the series.
Beyond his upcoming work on 'The Morning Show' Michael also shot films such as 'On the Basis of Sex', starring Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer, as well as fan-favourite series including, Netflix’s 'Ozark', starring Jason Bateman, HBO’s 'The Leftovers', starring Justin Theroux and more.

Geektown Radio - TV News, Interviews & UK TV Air Dates
04/02/19 • 67 min
This week's Geektown Radio podcast sees an ill Gray crawl from his sickbed to join the show and discuss the latest films, games, all the UK TV premiere date info, and US TV news. Amongst other things we chat about 'Fleabag', 'Line Of Duty', 'Dead Pixels' & Project Blue Book', and we also have an exclusive interview with Supervising Sound Editor, Trevor Gates.
With a background in music; playing piano and writing from a young age, Trevor Gates has always had an affinity for sound and sonic arrangement. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay area and Portland, Oregon, Trevor decided to take a leap of faith to pursue a career in sound. After attending The Art Institute of California Los Angeles and earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Audio Production, Trevor started working as an engineer and producer with an established R&B music producer. Trevor was next presented an opportunity to create sound for film. Within six years, Trevor has creatively participated in the soundscape of over 100 films.
Most recently, Trevor has been working with Jordan Peele on the smash hit multi-award winning 'Get Out', and his latest critically acclaimed horror/thriller 'Us'. In addition, Trevor recently won the Emmy for his sound editing on the Golden Globe-winning series 'Atlanta' starring Donald Glover, and you can also hear his chilling soundscapes on Netflix’s 'The Haunting of Hill House'.

Geektown Radio 190: Sundance Composers Roger Suen & Piers Burbrook de Vere, Film News, UK TV News & Air Dates!
Geektown Radio - TV News, Interviews & UK TV Air Dates
01/29/19 • 66 min
The Geektown Radio podcast returns this week to discuss the latest tv reviews, film news, UK TV premiere date info, and US TV news as Dave is joined by Darryl from Hollywood News Source as co-host. We also have not one but two interviews with composers whose films premiered this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, Roger Suen & Piers Burbrook de Vere.
Roger Suen is best known for scoring Justin Chon's 2017 Sundance award-winning film, 'Gook'. This year, Roger reunites with Chon to score the emotional Asian-American family drama 'Ms. Purple' which premiered at Sundance last weekend. The movie tells the story of Kasie, a young girl who has to seek help from her estranged brother when her bedridden father's caretaker unexpectedly quits. The siblings are forced to reconnect and reconcile the suppressed trauma that led to their separation.
When Roger isn't working on his own films, he helps out other composers, providing additional music for their scores. This has led to his work being featured in Guillermo Del Toro’s four-time Oscar-winning film 'The Shape of Water', Netflix’s five-time Emmy-nominated series 'Daredevil' and Emmy-nominated series 'The Defenders'. Through his mastery of orchestral composition and modern electronica, he has also created heart-pounding additional music for Oscar-nominated 'X-Men' and 'Maze Runner' film franchises.
Australian composer Piers Burbrook de Vere most recently scored award-winning director Abe Forsythe's zombie comedy 'Little Monsters', starring Lupita Nyong'o ('Black Panther'), Josh Gad ('Frozen'), and Alex England ('Alien: Covenant'). Whilst the movie has zombies and comedy, it also needed the actors to play musical instruments on screen. That included Lupita playing the ukulele, and Alex playing the guitar... with the minor issue that Alex couldn't play the guitar when they started filming, so we chat with Piers about what they did to solve that!
Piers previously scored Forsythe's award-winning provocative black comedy, 'Down Under'. Additionally, he has exhibited works across the US and Europe as an artist and performer, and has toured internationally with the acclaimed Australian Chamber Orchestra.

Geektown Radio - TV News, Interviews & UK TV Air Dates
05/19/20 • 59 min
It's our 250th episode of the Geektown Radio podcast! We were thinking of doing something special, but there was so much news around this week, we didn't want to deprive you, so I'm joined by Bex from TristaBytes in the co-host chair to chat about our week in tv and film, plus we have all the weekly tv news, renewals and cancellations... Plus, Bex was in something of a musical mood, so you have that to look forward to!
Reviewing the last 7 days in tv, gaming and film, Bex has been repeatedly drowning a digital cat on her Twitch stream (that's not as bad as it sounds when I type it out!), and also catching up on the Channel 4/Netflix drama 'Kiss Me First'. In tv, I have completed Season 2 of Ricky Gervais' phenomenal 'After Life', and also Season 2 of the wonderfully dark comedy 'Dead To Me'. Whilst over in gaming, I have spent most of my week building mechanical contraptions in the fantastically fun 'Satisfactory'.
In the latest tv news, we chat about The CW changing up their schedules to deal with the COVID-19 virus, which means late returns for all of our superheroes. We discuss 'The Vampire Chronicles' finally finding a home on AMC, and the return of Captain Pike, Spock & Number One in 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'. We also have all the latest renewals, cancellations and new tv show pickups.

Geektown Radio 283: ‘It's A Sin’ Review, Disney+ STAR, Renewals & Cancellations, UK TV Air Dates!
Geektown Radio - TV News, Interviews & UK TV Air Dates
02/02/21 • 60 min
On this week's Geektown Radio podcast, Gray The Geek joins me to chat through our week in tv, film & gaming, along with all the weekly tv news, renewals and cancellations!
Reviewing the last 7 days in tv and gaming, Gray has actually been watching some films (finally) so he gives us a review of 'Like A Boss', and 'Stage Mother', which can both be found on Netflix UK. He also chats through 'Staged' Season 2, Netflix's 'History of Swear Words', 'Moonbase 8', 'Industry', 'For Life' , and the return of Channel 4's 'Back'. Meanwhile, I chat through new Alan Tudyk sci-fi 'Resident Alien', 'Snowpiercer' Season 2, and we both chat about the recent 4th episode of 'WandaVision'.
In addition to all that, we both wanted to have a big discussion about Russell T Davies’ stunning five-part drama ‘It’s A Sin’, which is available right now on All 4. There are some spoilers in here, but it is clearly marked. I will say, if you haven't watched and finished the series, I strongly urge you to binge through it.
In the TV news, we have all the usual renewals, cancellations and pickups. We also chat through some of the new shows coming to new Disney+ "channel" STAR, which launches in the UK next month, casting on Neil Gaiman’s Netflix series 'The Sandman', ‘Titans’ adding yet more characters, and a possible ‘Buck Rogers’ TV reboot!

Stunt Secrets Of 'Shogun' & 'Tracker' With Assistant Stunt Coordinator Sharlene Royer
Geektown Radio - TV News, Interviews & UK TV Air Dates
10/11/24 • 32 min
Welcome back to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I’m chatting with Sharlene Royer, the Assistant Stunt Coordinator for utterly brilliant ‘Shogun’, which recently won a record-breaking 18 Emmys - including a very well-deserved one for Outstanding Stunt Performance!
Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s 'Shōgun' is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village...
It is an outstanding drama, available on Hulu in the USA, and on Disney+ in the UK and other territories. It's well worth watching and catching up if you haven't seen it yet, as it appears it will be returning for two more seasons following its record-breaking Emmy win.
Born and raised in Quebec to a Haitian mother and French Canadian father, Sharlene was a dancer from the ages of 7 to 18, before moving into modelling and acting. However, following a meeting with legendary Stunt Coordinator, Alan Oliney, she was encouraged to try stunt work, and found her calling. She soon became a very sought-after stunt performer being requested to double stars such as Halle Berry, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Williams and many more.
On 'Shōgun', Sharlene discusses her work on the epic drama as Assistant Stunt Coordinator, working alongside her boss (and life-partner) Lauro David Chartrand-Del Valle, developing the hugely complex Emmy-winning “cannon” scene, melding VFX, physical effects and stunts for the “earthquake”, plus location scouting, stunt coordinating in the pandemic and lots more.
If that wasn’t enough, Sharlene was also Assistant Stunt Coordinator on season one of the hit CBS drama ‘Tracker’, for which she became the first Black, Female Stunt Coordinator to win a Leo Award from The Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation of British Columbia. She talks about working with lead actor Justin Hartley (and his photographic memory), and also working with Justin alongside guest star Jenson Ackles... who sound like they were as much fun together as you'd expect!
Still want more? She also worked on the wonderfully fun DC superhero drama ‘Legends of Tomorrow’, performing the stunt work for Hawkgirl, so we touch on that in the interview too! Sharlene's other projects include things such as 'The Man In The High Castle', 'Never Let Go', 'X-Men: Days of Future Past', 'Siren', 'See', 'The 100', 'The Rookie', and lots more!
