The Mistakes I Made Managing My Child's Anxiety with Lynn McLaughlin

05/23/23 • 57 min

Failing Motherhood
"I blamed myself. I didn't see the signs. I wish I would've done it sooner."

How often do you get to hear a mom vulnerably share from hindsight all the regrets she has AND the ways she's grown and found self-compassion?!
Lynn McLaughlin is a former teacher, principal, and superintendent turned author and college educator while being a mom to three kids age 24-28. Her middle child was a volatile child with BIG emotions and eventually debilitating anxiety, and Lynn had no idea how to help.
Lynn is able now to look back and share ways she would've shifted from swooping in and enabling out of fear and worry to modeling and building coping skills.
IN THIS EPISODE, WE COVERED...

  • How to shift your response from being responsive to being proactive
  • The importance of reflection, mindfulness and modeling as parents
  • Clarity on when to help and when to back off
DON'T MISS-

  • The messages you send based on how you react
  • How Lynn no longer blames herself, yet changed her behavior

Failing Motherhood - The Mistakes I Made Managing My Child's Anxiety with Lynn McLaughlin

Transcript

Lynn McLaughlin

You know, first of all, I think we have to say, what are we modeling? Are we modeling, you know, keeping calm? Are we modeling being present? Are we letting devices control our life? Are we being reactive rather than proactive? And that's hard to do. And so I think the first step is for people to say, Okay, it's not working, something's not working in my family. What am I going to do about it? And it's that personal reflection
