Danielle Bettmann | Parenting Coach for Strong-Willed Kids

If you're riddled with mom guilt, your temper scares you, you're terrified you're screwing up your kids and are afraid to admit any of those things out loud....this podcast is for you. Hosted by Danielle Bettmann, parenting coach for families with 1-10-year-old strong-willed kids, Failing Motherhood is where shame-free vulnerability meets breakthroughs.
Every other week is a storytelling interview about one mom's raw and honest experience of growth that leads to new perspectives and practical strategies and every other week solo episodes focus on actionable insight into parenting your deeply feeling, highly sensitive, *spicy* child.
Here, we normalize the struggle, share openly about our insecurities, and rally around small wins and truths. We hope to convince you you're not alone and YOU are the parent your kids need. We hope you see yourself, hear your story, and find hope and healing.

Has your relationship with nursing ever led you to feel guilt, shame, confusion, sadness, love, and even grief? This episode is for you.

My guest today, Erin Harris, is a mom of two, founder of Nursing Mamas, and a lactation consultant who specifically equips parents nursing toddlers past one year.
Nursing toddlers is a whole new world compared to nursing a newborn, due to the shift from nursing on demand, to a toddler demanding to nurse. Erin shares so much insight into the emotional cycle of an extended breastfeeding parent, from love to burnout to guilt to grief to sadness and back again.
No matter where you are in your journey of feeding your child - there is no wrong way. I know you’ll learn so much through Erin’s story.

IN THIS EPISODE, WE COVERED...

  • Erin's opposite experiences nursing her two kids
  • Key strategies that protect + preserve your nursing relationship
  • How to successfully wean when you're ready - and how to know when that is

DON'T MISS-

  • Erin + Scott's family mission statement
  • The lessons Erin's strong-willed child taught her

There are so many reasons to feel insecure, guilt, shame or fear as a parent. How do you know if you're doing okay or if you need to make a change?

If your child’s behavior is not your report card, what is?

In today's episode I share 3 questions to navigate that help you decide for yourself and your family what the right next step is for you. Many times it's simply letting an expectation go, forgetting about that unsolicited advice, and allowing other families to parent differently than you.
Use these questions alongside the day-to-day feedback to stay grounded in the decisions that are best for your kids, and help you truly hear and listen to your gut instinct as their parent.

IN THIS EPISODE, I SHARED...

  • 3 Questions to ask yourself when doubting, questioning or worried about your parenting
  • A strategic way to address all the "shoulds" in your head
  • A way to re frame the adversity you face day-to-day

DON'T MISS:

  • How I use my family's values to know when something needs to change

Motherhood is hard for everyone, so how do you know when what you’re experiencing is not what everyone is experiencing?

Today’s guest, Becky Gleed is a busy working mom of two fun, spirited girls, a licensed marriage and family therapist and a certified perinatal mental health professional ! She owns and operates a private mental health practice right outside of Washington, D.C. specializing in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

In today’s episode we talk about how the egregious policies and lack of support she witnessed while working in emergency psychiatric care for moms informed the work she does now. We covered the breadth of mental health and mood disorders postpartum parents experience and why it’s critical to seek support sooner than later.

In a world that equates busyness with success, how do we differentiate when productivity is a mental health concern? Becky shares key indicators, next steps and power thoughts for moms struggling with high functioning anxiety, and insight on when and why to get help.

IN THIS EPISODE, WE COVERED...

  • How to recognize the root of what's driving your productivity
  • Why you need to differentiate your identity from your symptoms
  • What happens years down the road when you DON'T get help

DON'T MISS-

  • Key take home messages to remind yourself of often

Parents to a 4-year-old strong-willed son and an almost 2 year-old daughter, Omaya + Andrew are here to share the biggest mindset shifts they internalized that made it possible for them to go from constantly splitting up their family to avoid setting off their strong-willed child to watching their sibling relationship thrive and taking both kids hiking as a solo parent!
They reflected on what they've done well to parent together as true partners, processing the information in real time and tagging each other out in the moment.
But most importantly, they hope by hearing their story you'll not only feel incredibly validated, but realize how possible it is to make sense of all the theories when you have individualized insight.
IN THIS EPISODE, WE COVERED...

  • The problem with spending your energy trying to rationalize with someone who’s behavior is by definition, irrational
  • What it really means to respond to the emotion, not the action
  • How empowering it is to move from avoidance to acceptance of your child's BIG emotions

"I blamed myself. I didn't see the signs. I wish I would've done it sooner."

How often do you get to hear a mom vulnerably share from hindsight all the regrets she has AND the ways she's grown and found self-compassion?!
Lynn McLaughlin is a former teacher, principal, and superintendent turned author and college educator while being a mom to three kids age 24-28. Her middle child was a volatile child with BIG emotions and eventually debilitating anxiety, and Lynn had no idea how to help.
Lynn is able now to look back and share ways she would've shifted from swooping in and enabling out of fear and worry to modeling and building coping skills.
IN THIS EPISODE, WE COVERED...

  • How to shift your response from being responsive to being proactive
  • The importance of reflection, mindfulness and modeling as parents
  • Clarity on when to help and when to back off
DON'T MISS-

  • The messages you send based on how you react

Today I’m sitting down with Brittney and Shannon, two out of the four moms from Moms Talk Autism, a podcast where good friends share their journeys figuring out in real time how to best support their kids and themselves, discussing school, family balance, siblings, grief, therapies, social issues, behaviors, delays, diagnosis advocacy, marriage, and more.

Our conversation highlights their individual stories, Brittney with four kids - two with Autism, both with very different needs and Shannon with an 18 year old and 10 y/o daughter with Autism. They offer honesty, wisdom and advice for other parents in the trenches with them - where there’s no rulebook and a lot of pressure, spanning from protecting your peace, finding your people, and building a new dream.

As we wrap up, they reflect on the beautiful ways they’ve changed as people as a result of parenting their kids.

IN THIS EPISODE, WE COVERED...

  • Trusting your gut when you know something is wrong
  • "My child has not changed, your perception of them has..."
  • Moments that are gut-wrenching alongside moments of gratitude

DON'T MISS-

  • Diversifying your friendship portfolio

Failing Motherhood - 82. Embracing Delegation with Yoky Matsuoka
play

11/08/22 • 58 min

Our current reality is impossible, my friends. Among many things, moms spend as much as 97 hours a week on household and parenting tasks. It's especially hard during the holiday season, and a quarter of moms say they have zero time for themselves. The village we used to be able to rely on is gone. IN THIS EPISODE, SHE SHARES...

  • The way her life coach pushed through her resistance to putting her oxygen mask on first
  • The breaking point that led her to start Yohana
  • All the ways Yohana can take things off your to-do list this holiday season

DON'T MISS -

  • How to create a ME List and truly prioritize it
  • The perspective that will enable you to get past the hurdle of needing to do everything all by yourself
