Kieren Lefevre: Getting Strong and Eating Right for Jiu-Jitsu
12/05/22 • 60 min
We are joined by Kieren Lefevre and BJJ Blue belt, YouTuber, personal coach for jiu-jitsu practitioners, and Cohost of Beyond Jiu-Jitsu Podcast.
Kieren is very personable and easy to talk with. In Kieren's answers, he gives a deep sense of understanding and authority in the strength and conditioning, and nutrition for BJJ practitioners, but he breaks it down so that it is consumable by the masses.
Kieren's journey into jiu-jitsu is like many of ours and is very relatable. He was hesitant to join, thought he would be better than he was, and was instantly bit by the BJJ bug. In our conversation, we discuss his competing journey, the best exercises and equipment for BJJ S&C, the difference between normal lifting and sport-specific training, nutrition for BJJ athletes, how to cut weight for competition properly, best supplements for BJJ, and much more.
This conversation is an incredible source of information for everyone. Grab a pen and paper, sit down for a while, and enjoy the feast of knowledge.

Seven Tips to Improve Your Jiu-Jitsu Class
After training for almost five years, Jon and Travis give their seven tips to help you make your jiu-jitsu class better.
1. Train with intention. 2. Spar 3. Set goals 4. Have three types of training partners (Which could be hard when you first start)—someone less skilled, someone with the same skills, and more experienced. 5. Ask questions. Don't feel stupid if you don't understand something or need to see a technique again. Someone else is most likely thinking the same way. 6. Try the techniques you learned in class. You will have the most resistance when doing it in the same class you learn it. 7. Focus, Breath, and Don't panic

Kristina Barlaan: Mental Health and Women in Jiu-Jitsu | Ep. 71
Today we have the incredible pleasure of speaking with Kristina Barlaan, a second-degree black belt under Caio Terra.
Kristina initially did not find jiu-jitsu interesting after starting to train Muay Thai at Cesar Gracie‘s Gracie Fighter Academy. Her first experience with training jiu-jitsu was during a NoGi class; she did not initially enjoy it. A couple of months later, a friend convinced her to try jiu-jitsu a second time, and it stuck.
It would be hard to tell from her infectious personality, but Kristina is very candid about her struggles with mental health, and she overcomes it for BJJ. Her perseverance in fighting her mental battles is inspiring; what she has accomplished adds to it. Even as a high-level competitor with a list of accolades anyone would be proud of doesn't stop Kristina's imposter syndrome from rearing its ugly face once in a while.
Kristina mentions that no one should go through their struggles alone, and that is why so many people gravitate towards BJJ to help with their mental health. Everyone must have a circle of people who can support and help them.
