285. Consistently Inconsistent
Crystal Paine Show
12/17/24 • 46 min
Welcome back to the show, everyone! While not intentional, we have been MIA from your ears for three whole weeks. We originally intended to only be absent for Thanksgiving week, but one week somehow managed to turn into two weeks which turned into three. That was in large part because of lots of things happening during that time, so we definitely have some exciting updates!
Hear about things such as the two trips that I took to Kansas, the offer that Jesse and I put on a rental house, and how I recently took on a new position at our company! We also dealt with a round of hand, foot, and mouth disease in the family and have, of course, been prepping for Christmas, so yeah, we have had A LOT going on, but we are back!
As I said, I took on a new role at our company and am so excited to be going into 2025. However, Jesse and I discuss how saying yes to things often means having to say no to others, so I discuss the small sacrifices I am making in exchange. We touch upon the importance of having consistency and fixed times for chores, tasks, and activities during the day and also why it’s good to give yourself grace when on a journey of self-development, celebrating wins and progress despite setbacks and unmet goals.
Jesse and I also discuss three shows and movies that I watched recently, all on Disney+. Together, we watched a four-part docu-series titled Tsunami: Race Against Time, and we talk about what we loved about it and how enlightening we found it. I also recently watched a movie called Out of My Mind, and I reflect on some of the important lessons that the movie offers its viewers. Lastly, I discuss a documentary titled Endurance which tells the story of Ernest Shackleton and his ship that got stuck off the coast of Antarctica.
I also reflect on a really important question that I got from a listener recently asking about approaching the major decision of adding more children to their family, especially when it will mean a big age gap between the kids that they already have and their new additions. As those of you who know our story know, that is pretty much exactly what our arrangement is like, so we discuss how we have made it work and what we have learned - not just us two but also our older kids.
As always, I hope that our discussion is helpful and insightful, and I hope that you will join us next time! It will be our final episode of 2024, and we will be talking about our 2025 goals!

294. Celebrating Black History All Year Long (with Trillia Newbell)
Crystal Paine Show
03/11/25 • 35 min
I have been so excited for this episode because I had the pleasure of sitting down with Trillia Newbell, author of the book Celebrating Around the Table: Learning the Stories of Black Christians Through Readings, Fellowships, Food, and Faith!
When we talk about celebrating culture within the church, what does that actually look like in our homes, around our tables, and in our conversations with our kids? You have perhaps considered this before, but even if you haven't, then you are not going to want to miss this episode because Trillia offers a wealth of insight and experience as she talks about the book.
Celebrating Around the Table is a book which invites families to explore Black history through devotionals, recipes, and meaningful discussions, but it definitely is not just a book about the past; it is also about how Christians can embrace and celebrate the beautiful diversity interwoven into the church.
Tune in as Trillia shares how her own interracial family has learned to cherish both their Black heritage and their shared faith, using Black History Month as a time to reflect, learn, and celebrate. She and I also talk about the church’s role in addressing racism, not with vague calls for unity but with actual, actionable conversations about sin, repentance, and reconciliation.
Via the powerful stories throughout her book, such as those of Elizabeth Freeman who fought for her freedom in court and Ruby Bridges who faced truly unimaginable challenges as a child, Trillia reminds us how faith, courage, and perseverance have shaped history and why these stories absolutely still matter today!
Again, this is an incredibly rich conversation that you are not going to want to miss, whether you are looking for ways to honor Black history with your family or wondering how to have honest, gospel-centered conversations about race, this episode is sure to enlighten, encourage, and even challenge you!
In This Episode
[0:35] - I am so excited to welcome Trillia Newbell, author of Celebrating Around the Table, to the show!
[1:38] - Trillia cherishes her interracial family, enjoys parenting teens, and supports their artistic ambitions.
[4:40] - Trillia's biracial children embrace both cultures, and she is grateful for a family life free of racism.
[8:01] - Trillia's family celebrates Black History Month by learning about influential Black historical figures.
[10:15] - Elizabeth Freeman won her freedom in court after realizing her equality via the Declaration.
[11:41] - Ruby Bridges, at only six years old, desegregated schools, showing faith, courage, and forgiveness despite hatred.
[14:56] - Cooking and discussing cultural recipes can lead to meaningful conversations about history, faith, and community.
[17:17] - Understanding others’ histories and experiences can help break barriers.
[19:38] - Trillia states that racism persists because of sin, causing pain and requiring ongoing resistance until Christ's return.
[23:09] - The church must preach repentance, confront sin, and promote reconciliation that goes beyond political debates.
[25:23] - Trillia believes that parents need to teach children early to appreciate diversity.
[27:19] - I point out how experiencing diverse cultures deepens faith and that family separation causes generational trauma, as seen in slavery.
[29:31] - Trillia adds that slavery’s cruelty tore families apart, erased histories, and tried to strip people of their humanity.
[31:25] - Celebrating Around the Table highlights forgiveness, hope, and the beauty of human diversity.
[33:23] - Trillia closes by expressing that our unity is already won through Jesus, so we should live in that reality now.

Crystal Paine Show
12/03/19 • 24 min
One of the most requested podcast episodes has been for us to talk about our Christmas traditions, what Christmas looks like for our family, and how we do gifts for our immediate and extended family.
In this episode, we sat down with Kathrynne, Kaitlynn, and Silas and had a discussion on our favorite Christmas memories, why we make a December Bucket List, what we chose for our bucket list this year, some things we're doing differently for Christmas this year, how we do gifts, and what Christmas Eve and Christmas Day look like for our family.
One of our biggest goals for each December is to keep things simple, not over-commit, and focus on memory-making and shared experiences. We're excited about some new things we're trying this year and we're looking forward to another special December season of celebrating the true meaning of Christmas and spending lots of time together as a family!

Crystal Paine Show
02/27/24 • 30 min
This week, I get to share a conversation I had recently with Sara Hagerty -- and it's one I think you'll love and be deeply inspired by! I know I was! Sara is the author of The Gift of Limitations: Finding Beauty in Your Boundaries and I resonated so deeply with her story and this book. In fact, it is my first 5-star read of 2024!
In this episode, Sara and I take a dive into her inspiring journey of facing limitations, from a challenging road to motherhood, 13 years of infertility, adopting four children, birthing 3 unexpected biological children, navigating a wide age range and seven kids, and dealing with chronic illness. Sara shares her wonderful wisdom on how to embrace and find beauty in the roadblocks, unexpected, and limitations of life.
We tackle tough questions and discuss the incredibly transformative power of acknowledging and grieving our limitations. Sara's insights into incorporating pauses into our daily lives and allowing God to work through our limitations rather than against them spoke deeply to my soul and it's something I've thought of multiple times since this interview. We also chat about the practical steps you can take to navigate the tension of feeling like there's not enough of you to go around and the importance of trusting God in those moments.

83. How to Parent a Strong-Willed Child
Crystal Paine Show
06/23/20 • 32 min
"Could you share some parenting advise for raising my enneagram 8 daughter? She is very headstrong and persistent, but has a complete disregard for rules and regularly challenges authority. As an enneagram 5 (and people pleaser), I do not understand the way she thinks. We have gone around and around and I've tried to get to the heart is the issue. But it seems her bottom line is she is going to do whatever it takes to get what she wants. How do I help channel her perseverance and tenacity in a positive way? She is only 8 years old. -a podcast listener"
When I got this email in my inbox, I could relate so much -- because I remember being that 8-year-old girl with a very strong personality. And truth be told, I think "headstrong" and "persistent" are two words that can still describe me as a 38-year-old woman!
Oftentimes, we hear people talk about their "strong-willed child" in a way that makes it seem so negative... as if a child's will needs to be broken and replaced. But that's like trying to strip someone of their God-given personality.
I believe that the character qualities of persistence and determination can be such a gift -- to your home, to your community, and to the world. That's why I want to encourage you to stop trying to stifle a child's strong personality and instead embrace the strength that it can bring.
In this episode, Jesse and I share encouragement for parents who are raising strong kids. I share from the perspective of being a strong kid growing up and we both share from the perspective of raising a child who has a very strong personality.
In This Episode:
[02:26] Why Snuggle Sacks have been a life-saver recently.
[04:53] I came down with mastitis on Tuesday, so here's what's been saving my life.
[07:59] My experience getting a Coronavirus test (Spoiler... it was negative!)
[10:59] A book update on Get Out of Your Head.
[14:07] We’re chatting all about raising strong-willed kids.
[16:21] It’s okay if you can't relate with your kids, but seeking to understand them is so important.
[17:16] Why rules for an Enneagram 8 are very restrictive.
[19:29] Change your mindset and see the desire for independence as a blessing.
[21:03] Stop using negative labels to define your kids.
[22:07] How studying personality typings can be so beneficial.
[24:26] Celebrate their strengths because they really are gifts.
[26:11] Say yes as often as possible for your child.
[29:45] Don't overly protect your kids from struggle and failure.

159. I got caught in the comparison trap!
Crystal Paine Show
03/01/22 • 26 min
Recently, I was scrolling on my phone and came across the social media account of someone I used to follow years ago. They are in a similar niche as me and back when I followed them, they had a lot fewer followers than me.
But in the last few years, their account has clearly blown up and they had hundreds of thousands more followers than me. Plus, as I was scrolling through their account, I saw that they had super high engagement numbers and interaction.
Instead of being immediately excited for them, I confess I started thinking about how I’m really dropping the ball in being strategic and creative in what I’m posting & that I need to step up my game so I can be growing more online and seeing more engagement like this other person.
And then it hit me: God has called me to be building into and growing other things the past few years — my home, growing as a person, nurturing and loving on the people in my home (and even growing tiny humans!)
I might not have seen a huge increase in followers the past few years, but I’ve spent hours and hours rocking little babies and speaking life to them... and that is very important work.
I might not have seen the crazy engagement numbers that other people have, but I’ve spent the last few years building deep relationships with my older kids and loving two birth mamas and their babies... and that is very important work.
The work that God has called me to right now might not be measurable in numbers that society and experts would consider important (such as accolades, income, awards, product sales, follower count, etc.)... but it matters far more than any of those measurable numbers.
No matter what we’re doing (or not doing), it’s easy to look around and compare our lives to others.
But God hasn’t called you or me to her life. He’s called us to our life.
We’re not supposed to do what she’s doing. We’re called to be faithful where God has us — even if no one sees or notices or thanks us. He sees. He notices. That’s what matters.
All the awards and applause and accolades, all the numbers and name recognition, all the income and opportunities in the world... they don’t hold a candle to faithfulness.
In this episode, we also share about books we're reading, a Spotify playlist I've been loving, and a meal-service we've been loving.
In This Episode
[00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show.
[01:15] - We talk about books we're reading and one I recently read that I just don't know what I think of it.
[06:44] - A Spotify playlist I recently put together with Truths to Remember.
[09:30] - Switching to Spotify and listening to podcasts has freed up a lot of Jesse’s phone space.
[10:17] - Jesse shares about a meal service he's been enjoying.
[16:13] - My experience with comparison.
[17:58] - I should have been excited and celebrating this person's success, instead I went to a negative space.
[20:43] - It was just such a reminder to me that no matter what we're doing, or not doing, it’s easy to look around and compare our lives to others.
[22:30] - A seemingly small thing done in love, faithfulness, and consistency -- it's not small!

133. Our Best Strategies for Raising "Twins"
Crystal Paine Show
07/20/21 • 32 min
Although we've never actually had twins – neither biologically nor via fostering – we have had two babies for most of the past year and a half, so we thought that we would share some of our best advice and tips on either having twins or fostering twins!
The biggest thing we've learned is that it takes time (our experience has been 4-6 weeks) to establish a comfortable rhythm and routine, so be patient, and give yourself (and those around you) a lot of grace. We also recommend finding creative ways of keeping track of things. Setting up different stations around your house (such as a feeding station and a diaper-changing station) and using an app to keep track of when each baby is fed, sleeps, has their diaper changed, get their meds, etc. can really help when you are sleep-deprived and caring for multiple babies -- especially if one is medically fragile or has special needs.
On a somewhat related note, we also share lessons learned from a recent trip that we took to Colorado Springs and how we encountered some unexpected obstacles due to having two little ones, so yes, even traveling via plane is going to be different if you have twins! Having two babies at once can feel overwhelming at first, but we promise that you will get into a comfortable groove! It will get so much easier over time, and it will even become natural to you.
Have you had twins or two babies who are almost the same age? If so, I'd love to hear your best tips and strategies!
In This Episode:
[0:35] – Today's topic is advice for having twins.
[2:39] – We just got back from a quick trip to Colorado Springs!
[4:00] – Learn why we couldn't sit together on the plane.
[5:35] – Jesse shares what he learned from our recent trip.
[10:04] – We both share what we're reading, plus some fun emails/messages from listeners!
[16:13] – We answer a question sent in by a listener about why we don't book Airbnbs when we travel.
[19:26] – Now let's talk about our best advice for raising twins...
[21:03] – Expect it to take at least a month to establish a comfortable rhythm.
[23:11] – It was helpful for us to set up different stations around the house.
[24:56] – I recommend keeping a log of when each baby eats, sleeps, has their diaper changed, has medicine, and so forth.
[27:25] – Give yourself and others grace!
[30:18] – You will eventually get into a groove.
[31:04] – The most important thing for us is relying on God and getting to see Him be so faithful!

280. Habits for a Sacred Home (with Jennifer Pepito)
Crystal Paine Show
10/16/24 • 33 min
I'm welcoming back a repeat guest this episode - Jennifer Pepito! Jennifer is the author of Habits for a Sacred Home: 9 Practices From History to Anchor and Restore Modern Families, and I have had the privilege of reading her insightful book which really resonated with me and challenged me to set up better habits and rhythms in our life!
Jennifer brings a wealth of experience, having homeschooled her seven children for 27 years! In this episode, we talk about the joys and challenges of motherhood she's experienced and what it's been like as her children have transitioned into adulthood.
We explore the significance of establishing habits that create a peaceful home environment and the importance of being present with our kids, even as they grow independent. Jennifer shares her thoughts on finding balance, letting go of perfectionism, and nurturing our children's development in a world that can feel chaotic at times. She emphasizes the need for mothers to have a solid sense of identity in Christ which allows them to stress less about things that don't matter and not try to find their identity in their children's behavior or choices.
Throughout the conversation, Jennifer also offers practical advice on creating daily routines that encourage connection and joy within the family. Plus, we touch on the delicate balance between guiding our children and allowing them the freedom to learn from their experiences!
Whether you’re navigating the early years of parenting, raising teens, and sending your kids into adulthood, this episode is packed with wisdom and encouragement, so please join Jennifer and me as we discover how small, intentional changes can lead to significant growth for both moms and their families!
