Fostering culturally diverse leadership….with Karen Loon
A Dog Called Diversity
11/24/22 • 36 min
In this episode we speak with Karen Loon, author of Fostering Culturally Diverse Leadership in Organisations: Lessons from those who smashed the bamboo ceiling.
She interweaves solid research with her own and the personal experiences of other Asian-Australian and Asian leaders. The end result is a contemporary and relevant understanding of the challenges of Asian leaders, including how their family and home life informs their work life, which is often not considered when considering diversity in organisations.
With the focus of the book is on developing culturally diverse leaders in our organisations we thought the chapter on a roadmap for individuals wanting to supercharge their career (chapter 9) and the chapter on a roadmap for organisations wanting to increase cultural diversity in their leadership (chapter 10) were the most practical and could be easily implemented by individuals and diversity & inclusion leaders wanting to make progress.

Creating diverse characters….with Vanessa Laguerre
A Dog Called Diversity
11/17/22 • 40 min
At her heart Vanessa is a storyteller. She has done many types of writing, from poems, songs, and short stories to news articles, blog posts, copywriting, and even scriptwriting. Her favourite, however, has always been writing stories where she gets to create new worlds, getting to know her sassy characters, going on epic adventures, and seeing good triumph over evil.
Vanessa also has some disabilities and uses her lived experience and love of writing to help other writers create meaningful characters with disabilities that don’t add to the damaging messages about disability out in the world
Listen in to hear how Vanessa is making her part of the world more inclusive.

Not weird, just autistic....with J.R. Reed
A Dog Called Diversity
11/03/22 • 31 min
J. R. Reed has some great ways of helping us learn and understand about being neurodiverse. Based in Missouri, USA J.R. is an autism self advocate, writer, speaker and consultant who growing up was described as weird, stupid and lazy.
A later in life diagnosis has helped him and others understand that his brain is just a bit different. A Mac in a PC world. A different operating system is a good way to think about it. We have always preferred Mac’s here at the Culture Ministry ;)
Some great takeaways from J.R. including that many people are disabled by the environment but can function perfectly well when the environment is suited to them. Workplaces can help people on the autism spectrum by having quiet spaces to work, reducing bright lights and not requiring eye contact, as examples.
J.R. works with companies, groups. and families to educate, create an accepting culture, and help those with autism lead happy, fulfilling lives

Debugging Diversity….with Dan Draper
A Dog Called Diversity
10/27/22 • 45 min
Apart from having a super cool name Dan Draper is doing some super cool things
in Diversity & Inclusion.
When he is not leading his current venture CipherStash, a data-storage platform that keeps data encrypted while still providing the search capability to which developers have become accustomed, he is championing diversity.
As the Executive Producer for Debugging Diversity, a 3-part documentary style series, he is championing the change needed in tech to diversify the workforce and to make tech accessible to everyone.
What does a white man have to say about improving diversity in organisations? Quite a lot actually. We love learning about how people are making a difference in Diversity & Inclusion and Dan is someone who really “gets it”.

Disability inclusion.....with Ainslee Hooper
A Dog Called Diversity
10/20/22 • 33 min
A 20 year career in the public service, repeated bully and a nervous breakdown forced wheelchair user Ainslee Hooper to re-evaluate her life and do something with much more independence and purpose.
Listen in to hear from Ainslee on how:
- Disability inclusion includes starting with the customer of your product or service and thinking about how you can meet their needs. People working in call centres and customer service teams need to be trained in this.
- We don’t need to know why or what disabilities people have. We just need to know what adjustments need to be made in different environments for people with disabilities to be successful.
Get in touch with Ainslee here

Later in life Lesbian….with Anne-Marie Zanzal
A Dog Called Diversity
10/13/22 • 41 min
We are so glad you are listening in and if you need some help or support with your Diversity & Inclusion work go to www.thecultureministry.com for more information.
Anne-Marie’s coming out process took longer than some, though as you will find many women are coming out later in life in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Anne-Marie lived the life that was expected. She married to a man, had kids and became a catholic minister before realising she needed something different in life.
It’s a super interesting story where she shares how at times in her life she thought she might be gay, why women are coming out later in life, and how she helps women with coaching and support groups to do the same.
If you want to know more about Anne-marie and the work she does you can access her resources on coming out later in life and order her book Authentic Peace: A Story of Courage, Change, Transformation & Hope

A Dog Called Diversity
10/06/22 • 39 min
We are so glad you are listening in and if you need some help or support with your Diversity & Inclusion work go to www.thecultureministry.com for more information.
