The Undifferentiated Medical Student

Avg Length 102m

Latest episode 5 years ago

The Undifferentiated Medical Student (TUMS) podcast is about helping medical students to choose a medical specialty and plan a career in medicine. The list of career options available to medical students is large, but the time to explore them all is short. Moreover, mentorship in medical school is lacking, and many medical students tackle the task of career planning alone, most struggling and almost all clutching to the hope that 3rd year clinical rotations will definitively resolve their remaining uncertainties about how they want to specialize. However, having been distracted by the relentless pace of their pre-clinical curricula and specter of Step 1, 3rd year medical students are eventually confronted with the reality that there are simply too many specialties to explore in one year and that they may not even get to finish their clinical rotations before important decisions about their careers need to be made (e.g., the planning of acting internships) if they are to be competitive applicants. Thus, mentorless and clinically unexposed, many medical students are forced to make wholly uninformed decisions about their futures. By interviewing at least one physician from each of the 120+ specialties listed on the AAMC's Careers in Medicine website 1) about their specialty, 2) how they decided this specialty was right for them, and 3) for advice about long-term career planning irrespective of the specialty they went into, this podcast aims to enumerate the details of every specialty and provide virtual mentorship on how best to go about moving past being an undifferentiated medical student.

As a doctor, you spent decades in school to get to where you are. Unfortunately, during all those years in medical school and residency, you probably didn't receive a financial education. But, not to worry. That’s where I come in. Think of this podcast as your financial residency without the long hours and sleepless nights! I will guide you through a financial education resulting in money confidence and clarity in this critical aspect of your life. You’ll understand how you make money, how you spend money, how your hard-earned money can work for you, and how to protect yourself and your family. I have witnessed residents and fellows bombarded by life and disability insurance salesmen and other “investment” pitches that are not in their best interest. You didn’t receive any formal financial education in your decades of medical training, so how are you supposed to know the good financial advisors from the bad? This podcast will help with that. Remember, it’s ok to not know the difference between a ROTH IRA and a 403b or which 529 plan is best. This podcast will simplify highly complex concepts and translate industry jargon into plain English. Are you ready to take action and make smarter, more informed financial decisions? Great - let's do this! Let your financial residency begin.

This is your space—a place for physicians and healthcare professionals to talk about the stuff we all think about but rarely say out loud. We’re diving into the real-life questions that make or break your days (and nights): How do I talk to my patients without sounding like a robot—or losing my mind? What’s the trick to managing my team when everyone’s running on fumes? Can I actually improve patient satisfaction without selling my soul? Why does work stress show up at home, and how do I fix it? How do I make extra cash and still sleep at night? Burnout, moral injury... is there a way out? What’s the secret to being a great leader—and not just the boss? Do scrub colors really matter, and what’s with the eternal pager saga? Oh, and we don’t shy away from the fun, messy stuff: getting stains out of your white coat, building a brand on social media, or figuring out if ditching the white coat altogether is the move. This podcast is about being real—because medicine is hard, life is messy, and you deserve more than survival mode. Let’s laugh, learn, and figure out how to find the fulfillment you’ve been chasing. Pull up a chair, put your stethoscope down, and let’s talk. You’re not alone in this.
