Dr. Jennie Byrne completed her MD and PhD in Neurophysiology at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She completed her psychiatry residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She has worked in many roles during her long career and continues to practice psychiatry part-time. She has held advisory and executive leadership roles as well.
Dr. Byrne is the founder and CEO of Constellation PLLC and the Co-Founder and Advisor at Belong Health. She has been called a “Triple Threat” because of her work as a physician leader, a healthcare executive, and an entrepreneur. She is a brain and behavior specialist with extensive training and experience in psychiatry, psychotherapy, and neuroscience.
Her book Moral Injury: Healing the Healers illuminates the often-overlooked concept of moral injury, offering a fresh perspective on the challenges facing healthcare professionals today. Dr. Byrne asserts that the issue lies not in individuals' resilience but in the systemic factors perpetuating moral injury within healthcare systems. Drawing parallels between healthcare and other workplaces, the book highlights the damaging consequences of outdated models and language.
During our interview, Dr. Byrne describes the hallmark features of moral injury and provides examples of colleagues, clients, and patients who have experienced it. She offers a metaphor for understanding moral injury. She closes our interview with examples of ways to help others overcome moral injury at both a personal level and as leaders in a large organization.

The Best New Business Solves a Problem
Physician NonClinical Careers with John Jurica
11/24/20 • 46 min
Dr. Jessica Lubahn is a urologist, health writer, and consultant. She is also the founder of ONDRwear, an apparel company that sells luxe leakproof underwear. Jessica tells me that she created this company to destigmatize urinary, menstrual, and other leakage through the creation of products that are highly effective and beautiful.
Dr. Lubahn received her medical degree at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Then, she completed her surgical internship and urology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.
Here are the major steps that Jessica followed in creating her new apparel company:
- Identify a problem experienced by her patients.
- Create the prototype of a potential solution, in this case, a tangible product.
- Research the industry, network, and determine if creating the product is feasible.
- Establish the business, and engage an accountant, attorney, and other necessary professionals.
- For her physical product, create a design or blueprint and find a manufacturer.
- Create a website and social media accounts, and develop a marketing plan.
- Start selling the product.
The process Jessica followed is quite similar to the way that Greg Hanson started his business in last week’s episode #170.
If you’d like to check out the Onderwear company, go to ondrwear.com. It's a very nicely designed and presented website, and I think you can still get a 15% discount on its well-designed clothing.

Physician NonClinical Careers with John Jurica
11/21/23 • 30 min
In this week’s show, John provides a short update on what’s going on with NewScript, and the Nonclinical Career Academy. And he spends a minute or two sharing updates on two of his most popular guests.
He spends the rest of the show sharing his answer to a question offered by one of his listeners: Is coaching/consulting by a career expert to overcome very specific challenges worth the cost of the coaching?
As John explains during the episode, it depends on severral factors, including the complexity of the problem, the specificity of the problem, and the skills and reputation of the coach.
While there is sometimes no objective answer to a question like this, John describes how he would approach the question. And he offers advice on how to optimize your chance of getting the most from the relationship. He also explains why coaching and consulting appear to be expensive, yet offer abundant value to the coachee.

How to Secure a Captivating Career as an MSL
Physician NonClinical Careers with John Jurica
11/29/22 • 25 min
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) in the pharmaceutical industry is a popular position for physicians who wish to leave clinical practice. This is true because it is possible to qualify for the job regardless of the extent of training (i.e., whether residency-trained or board certified, or not) or specialty; it does not require special certifications or degrees (beyond a medical degree); and it provides a moderate amount of flexibility to work part of the time from home. However, it often involves traveling to meet with clients up to 60% of the time.
John created a six-lesson course called How to Secure a Career as a Medical Science Liaison for the Nonclinical Career Academy. And he has taken excerpts from that course for PNC Podcast Episodes 276 and 277. By presenting the pros and cons, and an overview of the steps you can take to prepare for a job as an MSL, you will gain a much deeper understanding of the position and whether to pursue it.
He also goes into detail about common tactics used to find a nonclinical career, including converting your CV to a resumé, engaging mentors; networking effectively, creating a LinkedIn profile, and identifying professional organizations that can hasten your progress. The course can be found at: https://nonclinicalphysicians.com/mslcourse.

How to Select the Best Online Business Niche
Physician NonClinical Careers with John Jurica
10/01/19 • 29 min
In this episode, John describes what he has learned over the past several years about selecting a niche for your online business. He starts by providing examples of physicians who have created businesses from coaching, consulting, teaching, writing and speaking. Each of them has developed a niche based on their expertise and passion, and clients willing to purchase their products and services.
John discusses each of these issues in some detail. Then he outlines a process for narrowing down those ideas to one or two specfiic areas.
Then he discusses mistakes he made, misconceptions about competition, and the best way to identify a good idea before spending too much time and money on a particular product or service.

Eager Entrepreneur Delivers Solution to Staffing Challenge
Physician NonClinical Careers with John Jurica

Dr. Haneen Abu-Remaileh is a Family Physician with an interest in maternity care. With 2 children under the age of 4, she works clinically as a Locum Tenens physician.
She received her medical degree from the University of British Columbia, and completed a Family Medicine Residency at the University of Calgary.
Haneen is also a physician entrepreneur. She realized that there’s a fundamental problem with physician distribution and recruitment in North America that is exacerbating the looming physician shortage. She decided create a startup business called Locumunity (www.locumunity.com) that creates a centralized online marketplace where job-seeking physicians and medical facilities connect directly through a data and community driven platform.
I was introduced to Haneen by Andrew Wilner from Podcast Episodes 75 and 76. As a locum tenens physician, he has a strong interest in finding and supporting businesses that make it easier to connect physicians with locums positions, which is exactly what Haneen in doing.
During our conversation, you will learn about Haneen's start-up journey. She describes what inspired her, how she pursued her dream, how she integrates clinical medicine with running a start-up, and how an accelerator helped her find coaches and investors.

How to Boost Your Income With Short Term Rentals
Physician NonClinical Careers with John Jurica
10/20/20 • 35 min
In today's interview, I am offering a replay of my interview with Dr. David Draghinas, from March 2019, on the topic of short term rentals as a lucrative side business.
As I hoped he would, Dave has created his own course to help physicians to replicate what he has done, i.e., find, manage, and generate income with short term rentals. And I’m really happy to be able to offer access to his course to you.
David has enjoyed a lot of success with short term rentals. He was involved with several long term real estate investments but sold those to focus on his short term rentals. And he created his course to teach you, and provide you with essential tools, such as the AirDNA Market Analysis Tool, to be successful.
I suggest you listen to today’s replay. Then, if it resonates with you, go to nonclinicalphysicians.com/rentalcourse to learn more. This is an affiliate link so I will be compensated if you register using my link. Of course, the price to you is exactly the same either way.
And do it quickly, because the course will be closing to new students very soon, and I don’t know when it will be opened again.
Enrollment is ending at midnight on October 25, 2020, so go to nonclinicalphysicians.com/rentalcourse right away if you’re interested.
Avoid These Dumb Mistakes I Made in My Business
Physician NonClinical Careers with John Jurica
07/10/19 • 34 min
In this week's episode, I'll be talking about three of the dumb mistakes I made while building an online business.
I'm focused on an online business that provides coaching, consulting, teaching, publishing, or speaking, and is supported by a platform such as a blog, podcast or video channel.
Here are a few examples of such physician-run businesses:
- David Geier has created an online business serving those with sports injuries and other orthopedic problems while still running a busy practice. In fact, his side hustle helps promote and support his practice. He was featured in Episode 049.
- Larry Earl founded UrgentCareMentor to help physicians manage the business side of urgent care and occupational medicine services. He was featured in a this blog post,
- NegotiationMD, run by Robert Felberg, helps physicians negotiate better employment contracts.
- Katrina Ubell runs Weight Loss for Busy Physicians, a coaching service for women physicians that uses online video courses as part of her services, and a podcast to suppport it. She was featured in Episode 035.
- Rebecca Kempton provides consultation services to parents of children with sleep problems at Baby Sleep Pro.
- Rupy Aujla, based in the UK, writes, podcasts, speaks and sells an online course about health and diet at The Doctor's Kitchen. He has also published 2 books.
- Jason Ryan founded Boards and Beyond to prepare medical students for the USMLE Step 1 exam. He still practices and teaches cardiology. He is featured in Episode 81.
- Most of us are familiar with the White Coat Investor, who started as a blog and a book, and related financial sites like Passive Income MD and the Physician Philosopher.
The THREE DUMB MISTAKES
Here they are (I provide much more detail in the show, of course):
- Not basing the selection of my business niche on my expertise and passion, and my customers' needs and ability to pay for my solution.
- Not working aggressively on building my email list from the beginning.
- Not networking and collaborating sooner.
You can find a more detailed explanation about my dumb mistakes, and download a copy of the show notes at vitalpe.net/episode097.
