Physician NonClinical Careers with John Jurica

Dr. Haneen Abu-Remaileh is a Family Physician with an interest in maternity care. With 2 children under the age of 4, she works clinically as a Locum Tenens physician.

She received her medical degree from the University of British Columbia, and completed a Family Medicine Residency at the University of Calgary.

Haneen is also a physician entrepreneur. She realized that there’s a fundamental problem with physician distribution and recruitment in North America that is exacerbating the looming physician shortage. She decided create a startup business called Locumunity (www.locumunity.com) that creates a centralized online marketplace where job-seeking physicians and medical facilities connect directly through a data and community driven platform.

I was introduced to Haneen by Andrew Wilner from Podcast Episodes 75 and 76. As a locum tenens physician, he has a strong interest in finding and supporting businesses that make it easier to connect physicians with locums positions, which is exactly what Haneen in doing.

During our conversation, you will learn about Haneen's start-up journey. She describes what inspired her, how she pursued her dream, how she integrates clinical medicine with running a start-up, and how an accelerator helped her find coaches and investors.

You can find links to resources mentioned in the episode, and a transcript of the interview at vitalpe.net/episode109.

How to Become a Popular Freelance Consultant

Today we learn about freelance consulting with Dr. Christopher Loo.

Christopher is a retired surgeon, serial entrepreneur, investor, consultant, executive coach, best-selling author, and advisor. He received his MD-PhD from the Baylor College of Medicine-Rice University Department of Bioengineering.

He entered an orthopedics residency, but realized quickly that patient care would not be right for him. Once he finished his residency, he quickly began to explore other interests, including real estate, technology, and writing.

As a consultant, Christopher positioned himself at the intersection between technology and medicine. His first role as a consultant was assisting hospitals that were moving from paper to electronic records. He worked with physicians and nurses to get them up to speed with new systems and communicate their needs to the engineers building them.

He has now built a successful business brand and career, authoring three books, and speaking extensively about business, financial freedom, and entrepreneurship to audiences worldwide.

His just-released book is called The Physician's Guide to Financial Freedom: Getting Started as A Consultant: How to Launch and Brand Your Unique Skill Sets to Position, Leverage, and Capitalize on Niche Consulting Opportunities.

You can hear the rest of his story, and his advice for physicians interested in developing a career as a freelance consultant in this week's episode. For the show notes, a transcript, and links to resources discussed in the interview, go to vitalpe.net/freelance-consultant.

How to Select the Best Online Business Niche

In this episode, John describes what he has learned over the past several years about selecting a niche for your online business. He starts by providing examples of physicians who have created businesses from coaching, consulting, teaching, writing and speaking. Each of them has developed a niche based on their expertise and passion, and clients willing to purchase their products and services.

John discusses each of these issues in some detail. Then he outlines a process for narrowing down those ideas to one or two specfiic areas.

Then he discusses mistakes he made, misconceptions about competition, and the best way to identify a good idea before spending too much time and money on a particular product or service.

Go to the show notes at vitalpe.net/episode110 to find a transcript of the episode, links to the online businesses he mentioned, and a worksheet for brainstorming your new business ideas.
