Growing up as a lover of science, Dr. Kathy Zhang found herself on the road to medical school as a young adult. Starting her career as a hospitalist for four years, she quickly realized that the expedited culture of the patient experience was not how she envisioned serving her patients as a young girl.

While deep in the throws of burnout as a hospitalist, Kathy found her way into a fellowship that was more in line with her calling and how she wanted to serve her patients. What was initially a quick way out turned into a transition away from her burnout.

She now splits her time between inpatient care and her own coaching and podcast business, but she got there through therapy and coaching. Having experienced the change that physicians can gain through coaching, she had the overwhelming desire to share it with everyone she could. Her passion lies in helping other physicians find their way back to the driver’s seat of their own lives and how to navigate their struggles in a way that feels true to them.

Using some amazing tools such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) tapping, hypnosis, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), we can peel back the layers of conditioning that we’ve been stuck in for years to get back to the light in our lives. These modalities help us realize that we’re not broken, and there is a way out of the thought patterns that keep us rooted in burnout.

By defining your own worth and providing yourself with the self-care you deserve, you can show up as the physician that you have always wanted to be while enforcing the boundaries that are necessary to keep you healthy.

Tune in to this episode to hear more about Kathy’s journey and how she’s helping physicians everywhere navigate their path out of burnout.

“When we are exhibiting the same symptoms that we are treating our patients for, maybe it’s time to take a step back.” Dr. Kathy Zhang

A true system of medicine is based on a central understanding of creation and where the human being fits into the rest of creation. Our current system of medicine is mainly based on the economic system. This realization is why Dr. Melinda Toney created her Chrysalis Services program to treat the whole human.

Our lives are made up of a series of chrysalis moments where we transform in one way or another into a new version of ourselves. Understanding that our growth and development over time has a huge impact on our health is one of the key components of Dr. Toney’s programs.

Dr. Amna Shabbir was a previous podcast listener and member of the Physician’s Coaching Alliance. In the depths of burnout, she stumbled across Dr. Me First and found that she wasn’t alone in her physician burnout. After listening for over a year throughout her toughest times, she finally reached out to me, and the rest has been history.

Originally from Pakistan, Dr. Amna made her journey to the US as an international medical graduate (IMG). Statistically, IMGs tend to practice in underserved communities and with the elderly. Hardworking and dedicated, IMGs are still susceptible to burnout as they end up in areas with minimal resources, stressful work situations, and a system that is stacked against them.

With the cultural influence that many IMGs face about the career pressures to become a doctor, it can make the journey out of physician burnout that much more difficult. Finding themselves in situations where they are often underpaid, overworked, and isolated from their support system - the struggle that IMGs face is real, and they need the help, reassurance, and tools to fight burnout amidst the added pressures to succeed that are placed on them by their families.

After completing her fellowship, Dr. Amna found her calling as an integrated wellness and life coach while continuing to be a practicing geriatrician in nursing homes and obtaining the work-life balance and fulfillment that she has always wanted. She now helps others achieve the same, and she has a heart for helping IMGs carve their path in medicine.

She has a big passion for helping others transition and succeed while loving themselves and loving medicine, and you will absolutely want to tune in to this episode and hear us chat about the struggle that IMGs face and how the resources that are available to help them succeed.

Why do we push ourselves beyond what a normal human being can stand? Why do we work and work regardless of the state of our own mental and physical health? Because we’re doctors. Because we already have all the medical knowledge so we must know better right?

Wrong!

Pushing ourselves to try and be superhuman is not what makes us powerful. Instead rebooting your mental immunity, eliminating saboteurs, and creating momentum with your new habits is how to take back your power.

Listen as Sabrina shares an exercise you can use to take mini-vacations and allow your brain to rest and re-energize. We have to reduce our internal stress levels or we are all going to be riddled with diseases at extremely early ages.

If you’re not taking care of yourself then you cannot show up for the people who are relying on you. Sabrina’s techniques for re-evaluating your life and values so that you can find more alignment between your work and your health.

This was an amazing conversation! I love meeting other people who know how important this work is and also share that knowledge with the world.

In this episode:

[01:48] Welcome to the podcast, Sabrina!

[02:02] Learn more about her background and where she is today.

[04:16] Why she chose the word “powerful.”

[07:59] She talks about feeling stress and the statistics about suicide with medical staff.

[10:39] How she went back to training to regain her passion for her career.

[11:55] Why coaching is so important.

[12:48] Life changes, and so do your passions.

[15:09] Rebooting mental immunity is Sabrina’s number one focus.

[16:09] Eliminating internal saboteurs is the second step.

[17:10] Sabrina does two to five-minute exercises, which allow her to take mini-vacations.

[18:13] Step three is creating momentum.

[20:40] Connect with Sabrina and learn where to find her freebies.

[23:04] Errin shares her kick of encouragement.

Just because others think your way is wrong, doesn’t mean that’s true. Dr. Nikhila Schroeder and her husband opened their clinic, Allergenuity Health, with no lack of skepticism coming at them from all sides. They were determined, however, and now they have a loyal customer base and a business that feels right.

Nikhila has been working in the medical field for over a decade and knows that it can be better. She and her husband started Allergenuity Health to change how we approach immunology and workplace practices, and it’s working.

Their approach has helped hundreds of patients of all ages experience fewer and fewer symptoms related to allergies. It has not been an easy road, but it has been extremely rewarding.

Listen as she shares some of her beliefs on patient care and the role of medicine in our everyday lives. Additionally, she gives us a deep dive into why she’s looking for alternatives to immunology beyond injections and daily pills.

As a chronic allergy sufferer I was extremely excited to get to speak with Nikihla and I definitely learned some things. Listen in and see if you can apply her experience to your life and practice.

In this episode:

[10:24] She shares some big differences between their clinic and other allergy clinics around them.

[14:30] Learn how she gets to know her patients and their families.

[17:22] Listen as she shares a new allergy therapy called sublingual immunotherapy.

[22:20] There are two main types of sublingual immunotherapy, and Dr. Schroeder explains the differences and the side effects.

[28:40] Dr. Schroeder discusses why the immune system works differently with allergies on each individual.

[33:40] She speaks about the push back she got from her peers for doing something different from the mainstream.

[37:39] Dr. Schroeder talks about moving to North Carolina to open their clinic and how the other allergist acted to what she was doing.

[41:47] Thank you so much for being on the show!

play

09/19/22 • 47 min

When staring burnout straight in the face, we can sometimes feel the push to jump off of the ledge and leave medicine in the dust.

So why don’t we?

In this episode, I chat with the amazing Dr. Debbie Bradley and her experience with walking away from medicine and her shift into something that brought her so much more gratification.

However, the process of walking away from a practice that you’ve been invested in for years is never easy and it is one that I often equate to the cycle of grief. For many of us, medicine is something that we’ve devoted a large chunk of our lives to, and the idea of leaving that behind - although it is gratifying - comes with a bit of a mourning process as we say goodbye and transition to the next chapter.

By allowing ourselves to experience the cycle of grief and feel all the feels that it brings with it, you open the door to finding your identity in who you actually are as opposed to what you’re doing. As doctors, we have to identify ourselves without our practice and that is very difficult after you have dedicated your time to becoming a doctor in your field of practice.

Drawing a boundary for what is best for you and your mental, physical, and emotional health can be hard especially when it’s with something that you’ve dedicated your career to. But, that’s OK. Hard doesn’t make it wrong, hard is part of life. You will always take your experiences and knowledge with you to the next chapter and it will never completely leave you.

The other difficult component of being a physician and deciding to take a stand for yourself to move forward to the next best thing is often found in how it will impact others. Who will care for your patients? What about your team? These are difficult pills to swallow when you’re trying to do the best thing for you, but we have to continue to remind ourselves that we’ve served and will continue to serve others as doctors in whatever area we go to and it’s OK to leave people pleasing in the past and do what’s best for you.

When you can show up as the best version of yourself and embrace your identity after overcoming the cycle of grief and the fear of failure, that is when you can be empowered to do your best work and advance the field of medicine.

“I am the CEO of my life.” Dr. Debbie Bradley

In this episode:

[02:35] Welcome to the show, Dr. Debbie Bradley!

[03:34] She shares her background and what lights her up.

[04:34] She discusses her journey to where she is today.

[10:14] Dr. Bradley believes that women physicians are not good at knowing their worth.

[11:16] As long as she can remember she wanted to be a doctor, so thinking of doing something caused fear to surface.

[14:18] “Hard doesn’t make it wrong, hard is just a part of life.”

[15:53] Dr. Bradley talks about going through a period of anger when she resigned from clinical medicine.

[18:38] She discusses the feelings that surfaced like guilt and shame.

[21:13] She believes that in med school you are conditioned to be people pleasers.

[24:34] She shares how she feels about leaving clinical medicine as her end date approaches.
