Summer time means warmer weather, which can also mean insects like mosquitos, fleas, and ticks, tend to be more abundant. More insects mean the potential for increased exposure to bug bites.  Bug bites are never fun, and they are not something you want to deal with when you are pregnant.  Insects like mosquitos, fleas, and ticks are bothersome to say the least, but worse, they can carry diseases.  Some of the illnesses that can be spread by these pests include Zika, malaria, Lyme disease, and West Nile virus.  No one wants to encounter these diseases and especially when you are pregnant because they can be a serious risk to you and your baby.  The big question is, do you need to worry about bug bites during pregnancy?  The short answer is no, you shouldn’t worry, but you should be aware of what the risks of bug bites during pregnancy, how to treat bites, and how you can safely limit your exposure and mitigate the risks to you and your baby.

One of the most important things vitamin D does is help with the absorption of other important nutrients like calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate, and zinc. The majority of expecting mothers are deficient in vitamin D. This increases your risk for preeclampsia, negative health outcomes for your child later in life, and may even increase your risk for a cesarean section. Your body gets vitamin D from exposure to sunlight, your diet, and supplements like your prenatal vitamin. Most prenatal vitamins contain far less vitamin D than research is showing is necessary for adequate levels required during pregnancy. Pregnancy Podcast - 132: Iron During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

By mass iron is the most common element on earth.  We wouldn’t be alive without iron, which is why it is called an essential mineral.  Iron is essential for anyone, but it is really critical during pregnancy.  Iron is a component of hemoglobin, which is a substance in your red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs throughout your body.  During pregnancy your blood volume increases by 50%, which requires a lot of iron.  When you are not replacing iron as quickly as your body is using it you end up with a deficiency.  If you are deficient in iron during pregnancy it can cause premature labor or your baby to have a low birth weight,and impaired cognitive and behavioral development.  You can expect to have blood tests done that look at your complete blood count, which can tell you if your iron levels are low, or if you are potentially anemic.  If you are not getting enough iron from your diet your doctor or midwife may recommend an iron supplement.  Deciding what form or iron is the right one to take to maximize your iron levels and minimize unpleasant side effects can be a challenge.  This episode breaks down the evidence on iron during pregnancy, and the different sources of iron so you can make sure you and your baby have optimal iron levels.
