The Scope of Practice Podcast

The Scope of Practice Podcast

Brent Lacey and Doctor Podcast Network

Dr. Brent W. Lacey, M.D. teaches healthcare professionals how to manage their businesses successfully and master their personal finances. Most physicians and dentists enter their profession with large amounts of personal debt, and beyond that - they begin working with no knowledge of how to actually run a clinical practice. You should be able to help your patients and do what you love without being stressed by all the other obligations that come with managing your medical practice. Dr. Lacey interviews physicians and other industry experts on topics such as physician burnout, financial independence, business management, leadership, personal growth, marriage, parenting, side hustles, marketing and branding, and medical education. You shouldn’t have to feel overwhelmed by the pressures of running your practice or by your own personal finances. Restore the joy you receive from helping your patients, knowing you have the knowledge and skills to handle all the other responsibilities that come with that. Hit “subscribe” and get ready to change your life.

The Scope of Practice Podcast - It's Time to get Unbusy - Garland Vance, D.Min
play

02/14/22 • 41 min

Episode 98 -When did the phrase, “I’m busy” become a badge of honor? I’ve been wrestling with this lately. When did we get to a point when someone asks “How’s it going?” and we reply “It’s busy” like it’s something we’re proud of? I think part of it comes from the mistaken impression the busy-ness equals accomplishment. It’s all too easy for us to get caught up in the idea that being busy means we’re getting stuff done, or that we’re accomplishing everything we want to do. Sometimes being busy just means running around putting out fires and never getting to the things that actually matter to you. Today’s guest is going to teach us how to get “un-busy” so we can reclaim our time and our sanity and make room for the things that are truly important to us. It's time to get Unbusy.

It's time to Residency-Proof Your Marriage!

I'm excited to tell you about a new online course I'm launching called “Residency-Proof Your Marriage.” I’ve seen way too many couples get divorced or see their relationships go sour during their medical career. Medical training is an inherently divisive time, so you have to work to combat that!

Whether you’re in medical school, residency, or out in clinical practice, Residency-Proof Your Marriage is going to help you build a thriving medical marriage.

Sunday Special 16 - My guest today is Dr. Tolu Olabintan. She’s a family medicine physician and HIV specialist who left her steady job in the middle of the COVID crisis to start her own private practice. She started out with telemedicine and then launched her in-person private practice this summer. I’m not sure if there has been a more difficult time to launch a medical practice than the middle of the COVID shutdown, but there can’t have been many. She’s dedicated to helping patient both spiritually and physically, and she’s bold about speaking the name of Jesus on her website, with her staff, and to her patients. She’s got a unique background and I think her story will really inspire you.

Episode 68 - My guest on the podcast today is Dana Vogelmeier. Dana started Vogelmeier Consulting using a research-based, data-driven approach to help companies create a workplace where people love to work, where they feel fulfilled, and one that they can't imagine leaving!

Her 35 years of work experience included more than 25 years of leading diverse teams and working for many leaders. Over the years, she began to examine the differences in the teams she worked in and led. Some were great teams that ran like magic and other teams struggled to find harmony. I’m excited to have her bring her expertise to today’s discussion on workplace culture.

How do we create a workplace that people love and don’t want to leave? It’s a lot simpler than you think, and so I’m excited for you to hear Dana’s thoughts on the subject.

Episode 56 - My guest on the podcast today is Steve Anderson. Steve is a general contractor who specializes in medical and dental offices. He has literally written the book on how to build the perfect clinical office to serve your patient’s needs. He has built over 2000 offices for dentists doctors, fertility centers, ambulatory surgical centers, and more. I was tremendously impressed with his approach to building medical spaces.

If you’re thinking about building or renovating your office, clinic space, or surgery center, you need to bookmark this episode so you can keep coming back to it as needed. I learned a ton from this conversation, and I really think it’s going to help you as well. If you’re in medical school or residency, pay attention to Steve’s tips. If you can learn this stuff now, you’ll be ready to build or renovate your own building a lot earlier in your career than your colleagues.

Episode 60 - My guest on the podcast today is Lance Black. He’s the outgoing Associate Director for Innovation of the Texas Medical Center, now Senior Medical Director for 3ive Labs. This conversation really took me by surprise. He’s a world-class expert on medical innovation, but what I found surprising was how many facets of medical innovation are open to the average physician, whether that’s through developing a medical device, coming up with a non-medical innovation that helps your administrative costs and clinical efficiency, or investing in medical innovation startups.

No kidding, I really think you’re going to enjoy this. I learned a ton, and the conversation really helped me see through some different aspects of medical innovation that I’m actually excited to get into. I hope this conversation inspires you to go out and set the world on fire (metaphorically speaking). What idea do you have that is just waiting to be unleashed?

Episode 38 - To start 2021 off, I thought it would be fun to do something different. Instead of bringing you an interview this week with a fellow physician or an industry expert, I thought it would be fun to talk to you myself (Dr. Brent Lacey). People are making a lot of New Years' Resolutions around this time of year, and what better resolution could you make than to get your personal finances on track, especially after the crazy year that we just had?

This week, we’re going to go through the top 10 things you can do this year to master your personal finances and reach your financial goals.

I’ve (Dr. Brent Lacey) been getting an unusually high number of requests for one-on-one financial coaching lately, and so I thought it would be useful to break down some of the most common concerns I address during these sessions and bring you some ideas of how to start addressing those areas.

Let's start 2021 off right!!

Sunday Special 10 - I’m really pumped about today’s episode. I feel like it’s wrong to have favorite podcast episodes, like you shouldn’t have favorite kids. But, I’ll just say that this is one of the most inspiring conversations I’ve had on the sunday special yet. Dr. K Kay Moody is an emergency medicine physician who’s had to overcome a lot of serious challenges.

She’s battled hospital administrators who were making it harder to care for her patients. She has battled leaders who wanted her to stay quiet instead of speaking out against bad practices. And she’s dealt with people not taking her seriously because she’s a woman.

Well, let me tell you, this conversation inspired me. I want this discussion to give you courage. If she can take a stand, then we all can. God didn’t give us a spirit of timidity, but rather a spirit of power and love. Dr. Moody has that in spades, and I think you’re really going to be inspired by her interview.
