The Scope of Practice Podcast

Sunday Special 16 - My guest today is Dr. Tolu Olabintan. She’s a family medicine physician and HIV specialist who left her steady job in the middle of the COVID crisis to start her own private practice. She started out with telemedicine and then launched her in-person private practice this summer. I’m not sure if there has been a more difficult time to launch a medical practice than the middle of the COVID shutdown, but there can’t have been many. She’s dedicated to helping patient both spiritually and physically, and she’s bold about speaking the name of Jesus on her website, with her staff, and to her patients. She’s got a unique background and I think her story will really inspire you.

Simple Media Strategies to Grow Your Practice - Dr. David Geier

Episode 74 - My guest today is Dr. David Geier. Dr. Geier is an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist who helps athletes and active people feel and perform their best regardless of age or injuries. In addition to helping patients in his practice, Dr. Geier has learned to help people around the country and world through TV, radio, podcast, newspaper, magazine and online media interviews. Now he helps physicians and other experts with a message to share grow their practices and businesses by serving as an expert in the media. It is death to your practice to have no media strategy or a lousy media strategy. And the truth is, this stuff just isn’t that hard. Like anything, there’s a skill set to pick up, and Dr. Geier is going to help us put that together.

It’s ok if you have no interest in getting interviewed on CNN or even on your local ABC affiliate. If you never go on a podcast, that’s just fine. But, as Dr. Geier says, your ability to show up strong in the media can be really helpful to your business and in turn will translate to opportunities to help more patients that find you just because you were on an interview. If you’re thinking of branching out into the media, I’d encourage you to start small. Start with your local newspaper or other small-time publication. It’s low-risk, low-cost or no-cost, and it’ll help you get over the apprehension of doing it for the first time. As you get more interviews and start to build some confidence, start branching out and doing more interviews. Pretty soon, you’ll be a veteran. It just takes that very first time to get started.

Using Data-Driven Decision Making to Grow Your Business - Dr. Fisayo Ositelu

Episode 75 - Evidence-based medicine has been a big focus in the medical field. If you can’t back up a plan with some kind of study or data point, we’re going to question whether it’s the right plan. We don’t apply that same level of scientific inquiry to all situations though. Take our businesses for example. Are you committing yourself to data-backed decision making on a regular basis when it comes to hiring and firing, or taxes, business growth strategies, I think we tend to go with our gut or just try things and see what happens. There’s a place for that, but I think we ignore data a lot of times in our businesses and just act on instinct. That's why I'm so excited to introduce this week's podcast guest, Dr. Fisayo, Ositelu.

Dr. Ositelu is the cofounder and CEO of Gentem Health, a Silicon Valley-based technology company on a mission to help private medical practices stay independent by simplifying, accelerating, and maximizing reimbursements through its platform and service. Dr. Ositelu received his MD and MBA degrees from Stanford School of Medicine and Stanford Graduate School of Business. Prior to founding Gentem, he worked in healthcare private equity and at the now well-known startup company, NerdWallet. He’s going to talk to us today about how to take our evidence-based strategies that we use in medicine and apply those to our business. This may sound like a statistics class, but I promise it’s not, so don’t tune out. These techniques we’re going to talk about today could save you tens of thousands of dollars just by learning what you need to pay attention to in your business.
