Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Many thanks to Jessi Gold, MD, MS, an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Chief Wellness Officer of the University of Tennessee, and author of the new book, “How Do You Feel?”

Dr. Gold is the Wellness Officer for the 5 campuses of the University of Tennessee and its more than 60,000 students and almost 20,000 faculty and staff. During our 45-minute discussion, she related the history behind the adoption of “wellness” as a responsibility of institutions like universities and hospitals. She also explored how the relatively new concept of “work/life balance” can create tension in the workplace and paradoxically hinder students, residents, and faculty from achieving “wellness.”

During COVID, Dr. Gold practiced psychiatry and saw first-hand how the pandemic brought her seriously ill mental health patients and affected her personally. One result of this experience was her new book, “How Do You Feel?” Part memoir and part COVID-health-care-worker-mental-health-chronicle, Dr. Gold shares the stories of four of her patients as well as her own.

The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner - Wealth Management for Physicians: An interview with Bill Martin, CFA
play

01/21/24 • 32 min

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Thanks for joining me on "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner." My special guest today is Bill Martin, CFA, Chief Wealth Officer at Earned Wealth.

During this 30-minute program, we discuss the unique and sometimes challenging financial situation of physicians. For example, although doctors may be relatively high earners, because of lengthy postgraduate training programs that can last up to 7 years after medical school, doctors may not start earning high salaries until much later than their nonphysician peers. In addition, they are often saddled with enormous college and medical school debt.

Bill explains his approach to helping physicians optimize their investments and savings to ultimately achieve “financial wellness.” He contrasts wealth managers who operate as “fiduciaries” versus “brokers.” He also defines the designations “CFP” and “CFA.”

Bill is the author of “The Smart Financial Advisor,” which offers tips to his colleagues about employing financial technology and goals-based investing.

Bill explained that Earned Wealth offers several tiers of service. The first one is a free financial planning app, available at your app store. On Apple, it’s easy to find with a large green “E” at “Earned.” The next tier is an in-depth financial overview available for a one-time fee. If applicable, Earned Wealth offers a number of ongoing financial services for physicians who choose to become regular clients.

I think you’ll enjoy listening to Bill explain a little bit about financial services and how they may apply to your situation.

You can contact Bill through Earned Wealth:

http://www.earnedwealth.com

For our listeners, Earned Wealth is offering $500 towards your Wealth Diagnostic with code ArtOfMed. The Wealth Diagnostic is a deep check-up on your finances, billed on a flat fee. Learn more here: https://earnedwealth.com/services/wealth-diagnost

Thanks to Heather Fork, MD, for joining me on "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner!"

I first interviewed Heather about her coaching practice several years ago for Medscape.com, and she has valuable experience to share. Heather is a former dermatologist but discovered that private practice didn't align with her personality and long-term goals.

Dr. Fork became a physician career strategist and Master certified Coach 12 years ago. She has 2,500 hours of training and is accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Since then, she has helped hundreds of physicians address career challenges such as the "Imposter Syndrome," burnout, and even boredom after years in a successful practice. Heather discusses who needs a coach, how to find a coach, when someone might need a therapist in addition to a coach, and how much coaching might cost.

Please join us for this engaging 25-minute interview!

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Many thanks to Serene Shereef, MD, a trauma surgeon who achieved work/life balance by working locum tenens. After her residency, Dr. Shereef struggled with balancing three children, a husband, and the demanding life of a trauma surgeon. She tried academic medicine but was miserable. She quit and tried a community practice, but it was the same story. Finally, with the help of a couple of coaches and a reassessment of her life’s priorities, she succeeded in finding a part-time position that allows her to practice surgery while offering quality time for her family and other interests. She’s happier than she’s ever been and eager to share her advice with other physicians wrestling with work/life balance.

Dr. Shereef has a podcast, “Mindfulness and Productivity Systems Podcast.” The title says it all! You can reach Dr. Shereef on her social media channels.

Many thanks to Robert J. Wolf, MD, for joining me on this episode of "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner."

Dr. Wolf is a practicing neuroradiologist and author of “Not a Real Enemy,” an historical narrative based on his father’s remarkable experiences as a Hungarian Jew before, during, and after the Nazi Occupation. Wolf’s Grandfather and Grandmother, like almost another half-million Hungarian Jews, were imprisoned by the Nazi’s and died at the infamous prison camp Auschwitz. His father narrowly escaped and eventually had a successful OB-GYN practice in the USA, delivering 10,000 children!

During our 30-minute discussion, Dr. Wolf tells us about his parents, the detailed notes they left of their lives, and how he came to write this compelling, historically accurate, biography of his father’s harrowing and courageous exploits.

Show Notes

August 16, 2021

I was honored today to speak with Edward Halperin, MD, a pediatric radiation oncologist, and Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer of New York Medical College, Valhalla, NY. Dr. Halperin is an erudite student of medical history and authored the recent article, ‘“We do not want him because he is a Jew:” The Montreal Interns’ Strike of 1934,’ published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (1). The story resonated with me for several reasons, one of which is because I was a neurology resident and epilepsy fellow in Montreal from 1985-1989. Dr. Halperin’s research puts the current discussion of institutional racism in medicine into relevant historical context.

During this 25-minute interview, Dr. Halperin relates the almost forgotten story of Samuel Rabinovitch, MD, the top medical student at the University of Montreal and Jewish intern (briefly!) at the Montreal Notre-Dame Hospital. To protest the hiring of a Jew, 75 French Canadian Roman Catholic interns from multiple hospitals chose to disregard their patient responsibilities and leave Dr. Rabinovitch as the sole intern on duty. Concerned that the strike deprived so many patients of medical care, Dr. Rabinovitch took the high road and resigned.

Dr. Halperin also discussed his research regarding quotas that limited Jews and other ethnic groups from entering medical and dental school from the 1920s to the 1960s. Specifically, he investigated why some hospitals defied this policy and integrated their classes.

To learn what happened to Dr. Rabinovitch and gain more insight into discrimination in medicine, please take time out of your day to listen to Dr. Halperin!
