Many thanks to Joe Friel, elite training coach, exercise scientist, and author of "The Triathlete's Training Bible: The World's Most Comprehensive Training Guide, 5th Edition," Fast After Fifty, and other books for the athletes and would-be athletes among us.
Joe started as a high school athlete, and his passion for exercise never waned. He's worked as a coach for more than 40 years and loves it.
Joe's 80 years young and still going strong. He works out 2 hours/day just about every day of the week and is in the middle of writing another exercise training book.
During our 30-minute discussion, we talked about exercise. Joe stressed the importance of proper nutrition, a healthy lifestyle, and how exercise can be effective no matter what your age. For those having trouble getting started, Joe also shares the best motivator. We had a fun discussion, and I learned a lot!

Wealth Management for Physicians: An interview with Bill Martin, CFA
The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner
01/21/24 • 32 min
Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!
Thanks for joining me on "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner." My special guest today is Bill Martin, CFA, Chief Wealth Officer at Earned Wealth.
During this 30-minute program, we discuss the unique and sometimes challenging financial situation of physicians. For example, although doctors may be relatively high earners, because of lengthy postgraduate training programs that can last up to 7 years after medical school, doctors may not start earning high salaries until much later than their nonphysician peers. In addition, they are often saddled with enormous college and medical school debt.
Bill explains his approach to helping physicians optimize their investments and savings to ultimately achieve “financial wellness.” He contrasts wealth managers who operate as “fiduciaries” versus “brokers.” He also defines the designations “CFP” and “CFA.”
Bill is the author of “The Smart Financial Advisor,” which offers tips to his colleagues about employing financial technology and goals-based investing.
Bill explained that Earned Wealth offers several tiers of service. The first one is a free financial planning app, available at your app store. On Apple, it’s easy to find with a large green “E” at “Earned.” The next tier is an in-depth financial overview available for a one-time fee. If applicable, Earned Wealth offers a number of ongoing financial services for physicians who choose to become regular clients.
I think you’ll enjoy listening to Bill explain a little bit about financial services and how they may apply to your situation.
You can contact Bill through Earned Wealth:
For our listeners, Earned Wealth is offering $500 towards your Wealth Diagnostic with code ArtOfMed. The Wealth Diagnostic is a deep check-up on your finances, billed on a flat fee. Learn more here:

Show Notes
Please join me for this 25-minute interview with Ruth Gotian, Ed.D., M.S., Chief Learning Officer at Weill Cornell Medicine, New York City, NY, and author of "The Success Factor." Dr. Gotian has bachelor's and master's degrees in business and a background in finance and banking, but her real passion is working with students, especially at the graduate level. She ran the highly competitive M.D., Ph.D., program at Weill Cornell Rockefeller and Sloan Kettering in New York City for 22 years. At the age of 43, Dr. Gotian went back to school to get a doctorate focused on "optimizing success in physician-scientists."
Dr. Gotian's new book, "The Success Factor," examines the qualities of high achievers, not only MD, Ph.D., students, but others such as astronauts, CEOs, Novel Prize winners, and Olympic champions. She discovered that all these exceptional people shared four qualities:
1. Passion for their profession-they would do it even if they weren't paid!
2. Worked hard and smarter by controlling their schedules and focusing on their interests
3. Continuing their passion throughout their lives
4. Constantly reinforcing their education through books, conferences, and mentors

The Seismic Shift in Leadership: an interview with Michelle Johnston, PhD
The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner
03/20/22 • 26 min
Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!
It's a pleasure to welcome Michelle Johnson, PhD, to "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner." Michelle is a management professor, leadership expert, and author of "The Seismic Shift in Leadership."
Michelle earned a PhD in Communication from Louisiana State University and is Gaston Chair of Business at Loyola University in New Orleans, LA. She's been teaching for more than 20 years and is an executive coach specializing in CEOs. Through her work, she recognized a "Seismic Shift" in leadership styles has become necessary to succeed in today's world.
To write the book, she profiled a diverse group of executives that included global business leaders and high-level hospital administrators. She observed that the authoritarian "command and control" style no longer served leaders as it had in the past. She discovered that traditional "cultures of fear" failed to lead to innovation and positive results. Instead, collaboration and "intentional connection" have become keys to successful leadership. Michelle reports great stories to illustrate her thesis.
To learn more, check out our 30-minute discussion about "The Seismic Shift in Leadership."

07/24/22 • 27 min
Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!
Thanks to Heather Fork, MD, for joining me on "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner!"
I first interviewed Heather about her coaching practice several years ago for Medscape.com, and she has valuable experience to share. Heather is a former dermatologist but discovered that private practice didn't align with her personality and long-term goals.
Dr. Fork became a physician career strategist and Master certified Coach 12 years ago. She has 2,500 hours of training and is accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Since then, she has helped hundreds of physicians address career challenges such as the "Imposter Syndrome," burnout, and even boredom after years in a successful practice. Heather discusses who needs a coach, how to find a coach, when someone might need a therapist in addition to a coach, and how much coaching might cost.
Please join us for this engaging 25-minute interview!

How locum tenens rescued a trauma surgeon: An interview with Serene Shereef, MD
The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner
08/21/22 • 27 min
Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!
Many thanks to Serene Shereef, MD, a trauma surgeon who achieved work/life balance by working locum tenens. After her residency, Dr. Shereef struggled with balancing three children, a husband, and the demanding life of a trauma surgeon. She tried academic medicine but was miserable. She quit and tried a community practice, but it was the same story. Finally, with the help of a couple of coaches and a reassessment of her life’s priorities, she succeeded in finding a part-time position that allows her to practice surgery while offering quality time for her family and other interests. She’s happier than she’s ever been and eager to share her advice with other physicians wrestling with work/life balance.
Dr. Shereef has a podcast, “Mindfulness and Productivity Systems Podcast.” The title says it all! You can reach Dr. Shereef on her social media channels.

The Art of Medicine, Episode #12, How to Practice the Medical Arts
The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner
07/26/20 • 28 min
Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!
Recorded April 18, 2020
Many thanks to Paul Gross, MD, a family practice physician and Editor-in-Chief of “Pulse.” Pulse is an online, weekly publication that addresses the medical humanities through works of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and photography. The journal's full name is “Pulse Voices from the Heart of Medicine,” and it appears at www.pulsevoices.org.
Dr. Gross started the magazine because of the disconnect between the science he learned in medical school and its application to real patients. He discovered that writing about medicine and encouraging others to write was an “attempt to get at the truth” of the practice of medicine.
Dr. Gross observed that the humanities are essential and how they can help train compassionate physicians. He explained how compassion is an indispensable ingredient for medical care and that sometimes, even in modern times, it’s all that physicians are able to offer.
Dr. Gross conducts writing workshops at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. He mentioned that writing can sometimes be therapeutic when physicians write about troubling events they have encountered in their careers. It’s also helpful for other physicians and patients to read and learn from these stories. Dr. Gross described the type of pieces that Pulse publishes and how physicians and others can submit their work.
Dr. Gross can be reached at www.pulsevoices.org.
