The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Many thanks to Joe Friel, elite training coach, exercise scientist, and author of "The Triathlete's Training Bible: The World's Most Comprehensive Training Guide, 5th Edition," Fast After Fifty, and other books for the athletes and would-be athletes among us.

Joe started as a high school athlete, and his passion for exercise never waned. He's worked as a coach for more than 40 years and loves it.

Joe's 80 years young and still going strong. He works out 2 hours/day just about every day of the week and is in the middle of writing another exercise training book.

During our 30-minute discussion, we talked about exercise. Joe stressed the importance of proper nutrition, a healthy lifestyle, and how exercise can be effective no matter what your age. For those having trouble getting started, Joe also shares the best motivator. We had a fun discussion, and I learned a lot!

Oncologist and Novelist: an interview with Jennifer Lycette, MD

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Many thanks to Jennifer Lycette, MD, a rural oncologist in the Pacific Northwest and author of two nonfiction feminist medical thrillers, “The Algorithm Will See You Now” and “The Committee Will Kill You Now.”

I’ve just finished reading “The Algorithm Will See You Now.” Written with a physician’s expertise and through a women’s eye, it’s definitely a page turner. I can’t wait to read “The Committee Will Kill You Now,” which is actually a prequel.

During our 30-minute discussion, Dr. Lycette shared how a severe episode of burnout pre-pandemic led her to temporarily leave medicine. She worked with a life coach, did a lot of introspection, and discovered how creative writing helped bring her back to clinical practice.

You can contact Dr. Lycette here: https://jenniferlycette.com

Yoshihiro Katsuura, MD: Orthopedic surgeon, author, and illustrator

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Many thanks to Yoshihiro Katsuura, MD, an orthopedic surgeon in San Francisco. Yoshi is also the author and illustrator of the new patient education book, "The Spine Encyclopedia: Everything You've Wanted to Know about Back and Neck Pain But Were Afraid to Ask."

Yoshi describes himself as a "reluctant surgeon." Before recommending a surgical procedure, Dr. Katsuura closely examines each patient's story, exam findings, and imaging to determine whether or not they will benefit from surgery.

To help educate his patients, Yoshi wrote a series of pamphlets about specific spine problems. Eventually, these turned into "The Spine Encyclopedia." A hefty tome, it's not meant to be read cover to cover but rather as a reference for patients who may suffer from neck or back pain and are considering a surgical solution.

During our 30-minute discussion, Yoshi also offered some invaluable advice on work/life balance and how to avoid burnout.

To arrange a consultation with Dr. Katsuura, visit his website: https://www.katsuuramd.com/

You can find Yoshi's book on Amazon.
