Fugues

Avg Length 24m

***New episodes coming soon!*** What is Fugues? The quick answer - it’s The Moth with neuroscience and music (and a bit of sci-fi...) A fugue, conventionally, is: (1) a piece of music with multiple melodies played at the same time and... (2) a trance state where a person experiences amnesia, and loses their sense of self. Both uses of the word have a beginning, middle and end. Taking a bit of license, each story we tell in this podcast will be called a fugue. And each fugue will illustrate a handful of mental ingredients. A fugue will also refer to any temporary mental state one is in. For example, you are currently in a podcast description-reading fugue. Hosted by Gabriel Berezin, some fugues will be autobiographical, others are contributions from special guests. ***Episodes 1, 2, and 5 are great places to start!***

Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

It's not the things that happen in your life that define you, that create your identity. It's how you talk about those things. That’s the theme behind this podcast. Research shows that the stories you tell have a major influence in how you see yourself and in how others perceive you, so it’s important to be intentional about which stories you share and how you share them. Guests on the podcast share the pivotal moments in their lives and careers, offering keen insights and “ah ha” moments to listeners, while triggering related memories of listeners, opening up opportunities to uncover their own patterns and discover better ways to share their stories. During this podcast, I’m asking you to listen to consider your related stories, and to listen to consider which stories in your life might have impacted you in a similar way. --- Sarah works with executives who know that story sharing makes them more compelling as speakers and leaders, and who want to improve how they connect with audiences, by uncovering the right stories and learning how to share them effectively so they can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision.

One minute of an experience could shift someone’s whole reality. Those minutes in my life in which I have been changed forever, give me a sense of the rawness of reality. The rawness of our reality is an extremely beautiful concept. It is a collection of the encounters that encompass what it means to be human. Some examples of the rawness of reality are, sweating through a suit jacket, tripping over an untied shoelace, saying “I love you” too soon, looking at the stars, and speaking what is on your mind in the most uncut sense of expression. It is an essential concept in which all of us experience it. It’s the collection of scenarios that are raw, uncut, and real. Once you experience something to often it becomes normal. After it is normal, then it could be mundane and eventually boring. People have to continually shake things up and step out of their comfort zone in order to embrace the rawness of reality. Throughout time people begin to acknowledge that the uncut side of life is what makes life beautiful. The rawness of our reality is a concept that sheds light on what it is to be human.
