Branding is one of those words that is used so often, I worry that we don’t really know what it means anymore. When we met with Robyn Graham, she helped us narrow down our visual branding with new headshots that aligned with everything we already were and wanted to be. If you’re local to Philadelphia, we can’t recommend working with her highly enough. The good news is that even if you’re not, Robyn offers virtual coaching on branding, business strategy, and more. Visit her at therobyngraham.com.

Today’s podcast is courtesy of my new favorite self-care supplier, Asutra. I found Asutra while skimming a listicle on Black women-owned businesses. Asutra is not only women-owned but women-led with Stephanie Morimoto as CEO and Venus Williams, you heard me, that Venus Williams, as part-owner and Chief Brand Officer. I use their Lavender scented yoga mat detox cleaner and it’s gorgeous. They have a whole range of products that are affordable, organic, and cruelty-free. Today’s episode is brought to you by another one of my favorite podcasts, ‘This Land.’ ‘This Land’ is produced by Crooked Media and hosted by Rebecca Nagle - a Cherokee writer, advocate, and language learner. Rebecca uses her keen investigative skills to dig deep into specific court cases and their myriad of implications for Indian Country. Season 1 was a cracker and Season 2 dropped in August 2021. This most recent season explores how a custody case over a Native child has far-ranging implications for the sanctity of the Indian Child Welfare Act, tribal sovereignty, and civil rights. The show is a fabulous mix of history and culture with a sprinkling of mystery and legal theory - what a combo! Find ‘This Land’ on any podcaster service and tell all your friends!

You know the phrase, "We want to take the politics out of this."? We're firm believers you can't actually do that. We'll break down the big difference between what's political (everything) and what's partisanship (political posturing).

On today’s podcast we wanted to share with you the story of how we started a research institute on the back of a napkin. No really - we’re serious. In the midst of the first lockdown we were asked to create an internship program for students at Charleston Southern University so that they could graduate. From that, the Community Research Institute was born. We started the institute to not only give paid work to the students, but to serve local businesses in the Low Country. A few short years later, and we’re now working with the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce to place interns with local businesses in need of social media and marketing help. We’re exceptionally proud of this program and you can learn more about it at communityresearchinstitute.org.

The most common question we get asked is ‘what is empathy’? Our answer? It’s the consistent decision to understand yourself and others so that we can all have fuller and richer human experiences. It’s a simple statement with a lot of complicated implications. We love complications, to be honest, because the more complicated something is, it’s usually more real. In that light, we’ve designed a 2-day virtual masterclass to dig into some of what it looks like to do the work of empathy. We’ll have discussions about inclusivity, how everyone has trauma and none of it is comparable, how to set boundaries, and why the Puritans were and are the worst, and more. It’s us and some special guests for this interactive experience. The next round is February 24 and 25, 2022 and you don’t want to miss it. Head to bit.ly/ARmasterclass to sign up. See you there!
