On today’s podcast we wanted to share with you the story of how we started a research institute on the back of a napkin. No really - we’re serious. In the midst of the first lockdown we were asked to create an internship program for students at Charleston Southern University so that they could graduate. From that, the Community Research Institute was born. We started the institute to not only give paid work to the students, but to serve local businesses in the Low Country. A few short years later, and we’re now working with the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce to place interns with local businesses in need of social media and marketing help. We’re exceptionally proud of this program and you can learn more about it at communityresearchinstitute.org.

Episode 4 finishes up our coverage of The Pharmacist. Dr. Erin and Dr. Kristen recap the final thoughts the series leaves us with, as well as sharing their own: what they learned from this series, how it ties in with the larger narrative of the national and global opioid crisis, and mixed feelings about hope.

Named for Harriett Tubman, Harriet’s Bookshop in Philadelphia celebrates women authors, women artists, and women activists. I found them in the COVID times, and so first began to shop from them online. The selection is great and the service is excellent, and by buying from them, you’re supporting an independent, black-owned shop. Also, their curated lists on Bookshop dot com are just the best. Find them at harriettsbookshop.com.

One of the things my mother instilled in me is that when people are in crisis, they still need to eat. Evidently, Chef Jose Andres believes the same. His organization, World Central Kitchen, shows up anywhere in the world where a disaster has happened - natural or man-made - and cooks for folks while the aftermath gets sorted. They’ve cooked for first responders fighting COVID, Puerto Rican citizens sorting out their lives after Hurrican Maria’s wrath reigned upon them, and more. They also provide training in the culinary arts and do advocacy work towards the elimination of food deserts in the U.S. and abroad. To donate, volunteer, or just to learn more, head to wck.org. They’re one of my absolute favorite nonprofits and a go-to whenever we have spare cash in the Donnelly house.
