Yoga: Yoga For Thyroid Series (Yoga for Hypo or Hyper) Part I
01/01/25 • 23 min
“Constant Practice Alone is the Secret to Success” – Hatha Yoga Pradipika
Personal Journey:
Host shares her 15-year experience living with Graves’ Disease (hyperthyroidism).
A message of hope for those at the beginning of their thyroid journey and insights for those with longer experiences.
Understanding Graves’ Disease:
An autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid. Symptoms include weight gain, heart palpitations, shaking, and fatigue.
Brain-Body Connection:
- Emotional brain (amygdala) triggers stress responses (fight/flight).
- Cognitive brain (prefrontal cortex) regulates emotional responses.
- Yoga helps balance these systems through asanas (postures) and relaxation techniques.
Stress and the Thyroid:
Chronic stress can disrupt thyroid function, worsening symptoms. Yoga reduces stress by calming the emotional brain and stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system (relaxation response).
Long-term Benefits of Yoga:
Helps manage stress, recognize emotions, and release physical tension. Offers a sustainable, supportive approach to navigating thyroid health and emotional well-being.
