Why So Cold? - The Shenandoah National Park Murders

The Shenandoah National Park Murders

02/07/22 • 21 min

Why So Cold?
In 1996, two young women and their dog set out on a hiking trip in the beautiful Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. But as they did not return home at the agreed time, a worried family member contacted the Park Rangers, who soon discovered the couple's bodies at a tranquil campsite. Straight away, it was clear the two had not died due to a freak accident or wild animal attack but in the hands of another human being.

The Murder of Cynthia Gastelle

Skeletal remains of a young woman were discovered off Mountain Road in Haymarket, Prince William County, Virginia, on February 12th, 1982. Due to the advanced level of decomposition, for over 30 years, investigators were unable to tell who this person was or where she came from. Meanwhile, the family members of Cynthia Joan Gastelle hoped that their missing loved one would return home one day—unaware that she had already been found decades earlier. Local Criminal Investigator Interview

This episode of Why So Cold? Will be different from the others.. Coming up in a few future episodes I will be covering several LOCAL cold cases.. Ones that took place where Watts Creative Studios are located in Bedford Virginia.. During the last few years I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with the Town of Bedford Police department and The Bedford County Sheriffs department on several video productions and live streams.. During this time we’ve chatted about cold cases and how I can help keep these cases alive through Why So Cold....so before those cases are released I wanted our listeners to get to know some of the investigators and officers behind the scenes..and why cold cases are so important to them.. In this episode I talk with Ricky Baldwin who is a lieutenant with the Bedford County Sheriffs department.. and heads up Criminal Investigations..
