Crimes and Consequences - EP 137: The Beast of British Columbia
play

05/23/22 • 51 min

The province of British Columbia in Canada was gripped by a string of disappearances and deaths of its young people in the early 1980s. At first, the police thought maybe the missing children were runaways, and didn’t spend too much of their time on the cases. However, when a 9-year-old boy disappeared and then his body was later found, the police realized that 9-year-olds don’t usually run away from home. Eventually, the police would arrest Clifford Olson, who would be dubbed “The Beast of British Columbia”. Listen to this week’s episode to hear about the 11 murders of children from the ages of 9-18 that Clifford confessed to, as well as other possible murders for which he may have been responsible.

TW: Severe child abuse
There was a time in this country when there really were not any laws against child abuse. It wasn’t until 1975 did the State of Minnesota adopt legislation regarding child abuse and in 1971, the Minnesota State Supreme Court first heard a case concerning “battered-child syndrome”. This week’s case is about the horrific treatment and death of three-year-old Dennis Jergens, at the hands of his adoptive mother—someone who had no business ever being allowed to adopt—in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Be forewarned, it’s horrific.

On the morning of November 2, 1990, a Florida Power & Light crew was working on an electrical box located in a wealthy Miami Beach neighborhood. The neighborhood was known for its beachfront mansions, however, on this day, it would be known for something that would horrify the community. Tucked along the base of one of the mansion’s exterior walls was what the electrical worker first thought was a discarded lollipop wrapper. However, upon closer inspection, the worker was aghast to find the body of a very small child, wearing a t-shirt with three lollipops on the front. Soon, this child would be known as “Baby Lollipops” throughout southern Florida. Listen to this week’s episode to hear more about this tragic and shocking case.

THANK YOU TO JOYCE D. WHO SUGGESTED THIS EPISODE!
Ann Hoover bought her first home in 1995 in the Pittsburg, Pennsylvania neighborhood of South Oakland. This neighborhood was somewhere that needed a lot of TLC (tender loving care) and Ann, along with her neighbors, were excited to rehab the area. Everyone including Ann and her next-door neighbor, Roy Kirk, looked forward to the transformation and had wonderful and exciting plans for their neighborhood. However, when Roy started doing things to his home that damaged Ann's, Ann felt her only path to recouping her losses was to eventually go to court.

In 2019, Keyona Griffin called 911 and whispered for them to please hurry because she was about to die. In the call, she told the dispatcher that her aunt had already been murdered and she was going to be next. But the urgency in her voice somehow got lost in translation, and the police left after knocking on her door and getting no answer.
Keyona's death and the murder of her aunt set in motion a sequence of events that resulted in two more people being killed. The murderer, Derrell Demon Brown, is currently on the U.S. Marshal's Most Wanted List. If you have seen this man, please call 1-877-WANTED-2 or go online to www.usmarshals.gov/tips. A BIG THANK YOU TO JESS M. WHO SUGGESTED THIS EPISODE!
On October 2, 2018, Cheryl Coker dropped off her teenage daughter, Mikayla to school and supposedly went home, or at least that's what her cell phone data said. She didn't arrive to work later that morning and when Mikayla got home from school, there was no sign of Cheryl. When Cheryl's vehicle was discovered at a local Kroger grocery store later that day with Cheryl's purse and phone inside, her family knew something was wrong. CCTV footage shows a man dropping off Cheryl's car but it never caught his face. Cheryl's remains were found on April 25, 2000, and her killer is still at large. If you have information regarding her case, please contact the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations (CBI) at 800-282-3782 or you can submit a tip online on their website.

In 2003, Brian Waters and another man were sadistically tortured for hours in the cowshed of the Burnt House Farm in England. Brian's adult children were forced to watch as a group of men thought up inhumane ways to brutalize their father. One of them, Christopher Guest More, Jr., was a former television researcher who had worked undercover for the BBC only months earlier. Eventually, police arrested five men for the murder, but Christopher managed to evade justice for 16 years, living under an assumed name. During that time, he lived in a mansion on the island of Malta, captained a yacht for the wealthy, drove luxury cars, and even worked with the Moroccan Royal family. How did someone responsible for one of England's most savage murders get away with it for so long? Warning: this case is wickedly gruesome.

In the late 1970s, in Quebec, Canada, a group of young people were looking to find meaning and purpose in their lives. They found that meaning and purpose after meeting a charismatic man named Roch Theriault. Roch was a devoted follower of the Seventh Day Adventist religion, and soon this group of young people decided to cut ties with all of their friends and family, and follow Rock into the wilderness of Quebec to form a new society and way of life from scratch. They soon came to believe that Roch spoke to God and everything he did was as a result of his conversations with God--even when it came to viciously punishing them, or eventually when Roch did things where members ended up dead.
