PRE-WEDDING DAY HAIR AND MAKEUP PREP
- First things first - with the advancement of cameras (digital, HD), your pores are much more visible than before. Makeup is a natural photoshop, making it easier for photographers to edit any imperfections post-wedding. Blemishes? No thanks!
- Pro tip before your wedding day:
- DON’T do anything different (facials, waxing, brow tattoos... don’t try it for the first time right before your wedding)
- DO: stay healthy, drink lots of water, get exercise
- DO: Shampoo your hair the night before, and arrive with dry, clean hair.
- DO: Use cheap hotel shampoo to open your hair cuticles (it makes your hair frizzier and easier to style... who knew?)
- DON’T: Use conditioner the night before your wedding
- HOW TO: Troubleshoot sunburns - Avoid going into the sun before the wedding, practice wearing sunscreen beforehand so your skin knows how to react to makeup over sunscreen - let it soak in and then put on your makeup. Green primer can sometimes help balance the red sunburn.
- JOE’S TIP: If you have major tan lines (sports bra, tank top, etc) wear a lei over the sunburn to help hide it!
- Speaking of cover ups, a good hair and makeup artist can also cover tattoos, if needed.
- HOW TO: Troubleshoot pimples - Don’t pop your pimples, and try not to touch them! Makeup will cover the color, but not the texture. You can ask your photographer to help clean up any pimples that arise.
- HOW TO: Troubleshoot hangovers - Put wet hand towels in the freezer - use these as cold compresses (and lots of concealer, color corrector)
- Why hire a professional hair and makeup artist? In addition to making everyone look photo and 360 ready, they keep everyone on schedule which is so important for your wedding day.
WEDDING DAY HAIR AND MAKEUP TIPS
- Wedding day makeup - keep it fresh with waterproof makeup (mascara and liners), good quality makeup, use primers to fill imperfections. Thin layers will help with the sweating and crying.
- Wedding day hair - lots and lots of hairspray
- Wedding day sweat - avoid wiping or rubbing your face with a tissue. Instead, dab with a handkerchief or a face towel from the hotel. Guys - groom styling is a thing to keep you nice and matte all day long

Catering Managers vs Wedding Planners with Amanda Douglas
Who’s job is it to create your timeline? Be the point of contact for your vendors? Cut your cake or work with your guests on their food allergies? Do these jobs fall to your catering manager or wedding planner? In this episode, we’re chatting with Amanda Douglas, the Director of Catering and Conference Services at the Four Seasons Ko Olina on Oahu, about catering managers vs wedding planners, and the benefits of having a wedding at a hotel vs an offsite event. If you’re considering a wedding at a hotel (or even if you’re not yet thinking about it), this episode is a MUST.

Catering Manager vs Wedding Planner - Who’s job is it?
- Roles of your Catering Manager - manages your food and beverage needs, should be informed of any allergies, schedules your venue walk through, creates a floor plan, assists with cake cutting, room blocks and champagne pours.
- Roles of your Wedding Planner - creates wedding day timeline, point of contact on the wedding day, assists with budget planning, runs the rehearsal, sets up your day-of items like favors, welcome sign, place cards, and assists with your personal needs like bustling your dress or tying your tie.
- NOTE: Amanda talks about a DMC (destination management company) - they assist with tours and activities during your stay.
- What’s the main difference between catering managers and wedding planners? Wedding planners will take it all on - all vendors and services from start to finish. Their job is to take the burden off the couple and to manage all aspects of the wedding. Hotels and catering managers focus on delivering on their food and beverage, service, and venue space.
Hotel vs Off-Site Wedding - The benefits of having your wedding at a hotel.
- Hotel weddings are a lot more inclusive and convenient for your wedding planning - little things you wouldn’t normally think about are included, like extra forks, napkins, glassware, tables, chairs, linens, etc.
- The collective experience for your guests at a hotel is easier. Room blocks at a hotel allow guests to all stay together, and also you and your guests to drink responsibly and get back to their rooms safely. Transportation isn't needed for your guests.
- Overall hotel amenities include air conditioned reception sites during summer, air conditioned bathrooms, a staging area for the couple, and indoor backup spaces if needed. These perks are not often available at off-site venues!
- There are less restrictions on sound and music at indoor venues so dancing late into the night is totally doable.
Amanda’s pro tip - you can plan as much as possible beforehand, but on the wedding day, try to enjoy yourself and let it go!

Wedding Day Details You Don't Want to Forget
There are a few MUST HAVE details you don’t want to forget on your wedding day, and we’re here to help. As a professional wedding planner and photographer, we’ve been to more weddings than we can count, and we’ve seen everything. We’re taking our combined knowledge and sharing our expert advice on the small, but very important details that are often overlooked. Trust us, if you’re planning a wedding, you don’t want to miss this episode!

Don’t forget these Very Important Details on your wedding day:
- Start your wedding day off right - play some music (90’s rap, relaxing spa, or whatever you feel like, but set the vibe with music), and don’t forget to eat! Make a plan for food so you’re not figuring this out in the morning of your wedding.
- JOE’S TIP - Bring a speaker to make sure you have quality sounds all day long, and if you’re doing a champagne toast, figure out where those glasses are coming from. Most hotel rooms don’t have them on hand.
- Prepare for your detail photos - grab all the items you want photographed, like your invitation suite, BOTH rings, flowers, shoes, jewelry, etc and put them all together for your photographer.
- HYDRATE! Drink lots of water all day long, especially if you have an outdoor wedding. And have a plan of where you’ll get water - a lot of outdoor venues don’t have water supplies, so if you get there before the bar is set up, bring your own water. This is very important!
- Break in the shoes you’ll be wearing during your wedding, but NOT the shoes that will be photographed.
- It’s controversial (in Tessa’s mind for some reason), but stock up amenity kits for your guests with items they’ll truly need: insect repellent, sunscreen, band aids, feminine hygiene products, phone chargers, hair ties... DON’T waste your time or money on misc items that people won’t need or use: mint or gum in the bathroom (gross), bobby pins, combs, shoe polish...
- Give your bridesmaids more time that you expect them to need when they’re getting dressed. If you want photos with you and your bridesmaids in robes, toasting with champagne, you’ll need extra time to get them dressed before getting you into your dress. Plan for it!
- TESSA’S TIP: Plan ahead in the morning and make sure the bridesmaids have their dresses steamed, tags cut off, and ready to go when it’s time to get dressed.
- Designate someone to be in charge of your important items, especially if you’re moving between venues - your marriage license, the rings, your phones. Know who that person is in advance so you know who to go to for all your important items.
- Keep your pant pockets and jacket pockets free of keys, wallets and phones. There’s not reason to have all of these items in your pockets, and they’re easily visible while taking photos. This goes for the entire wedding party, family, and anyone else in the requested photos with the couple.
- Learn to bustle
