EPISODE 13: The Ins and Outs of Wedding Photography
Unveiling Paradise: Your Go-To Destination Wedding Podcast
09/28/22 • 38 min
Episode Summary
We say it all the time - after your wedding is over, the only thing you’ll have left are your wedding photos. Wedding photography is a huge part of your wedding, so we’re THRILLED to have our very own, in-house professional wedding and adventure photographer, Joe, give us some insight about wedding photography. Tune in to hear his advice and our thoughts on ways to make your wedding day - and wedding photography - picture perfect.
Episode Notes
In this episode, Joe and I talk about what to consider when choosing a photographer, then go through some of our favorite photography tips. Although Joe is our resident expert, as a wedding planner, I have some very strong feelings about how specific photo elements can make or break a wedding. Unplugged weddings? YES! Table pics during dinner? NO. Brides, grooms, family (especially family!) and friends - you need to listen to this episode.

Ins and Out of Wedding Photography
- What should I consider when choosing a photographer? Style, coverage, personality
- Get the biggest room possible for getting ready in the morning.
- If you’re up to it, do a first look so you can spend time with your family and friends.
- Do the unplugged wedding.
- Keep your photo list light, and let us do our thing.
- Don’t do table pics - or get creative with them! Don’t spend your entire dinner trying to get pics with a table of your mom’s work friends.
- Trust your photographer - you get what you pay for.

EPISODE 15: Past Couples Share Destination Wedding Tips

10/12/22 • 27 min
Episode Summary
WE DID IT! We made it to the last episode of season 1 and we’re rounding up some great advice from former couples. As a professional photographer and wedding planner in a very popular destination wedding market, we think we know everything (KIDDING!), but for this episode, we turned to some of our real life couples to get honest feedback and advice for future couples.
Episode Notes
We asked some former couples an important question: “What advice would you give to someone planning a destination wedding” and boy did they answer! We have 10 useful tips and pieces of advice from our former brides, grooms and even their family and friends. Some of these tips are obvious, and others... not as much! Tune in to the last episode of the season to hear all the great advice.

What advice would you give to someone planning a destination wedding?
- Destination weddings will often be much smaller than a local wedding, so invite everyone you want and expect and plan for fallout.
- If you hire locally, you may not have the luxury of meeting them beforehand so find vendors you trust.
- At the same time, you can save money by hiring local vendors.
- Plan additional events before and after the wedding to keep the party going.
- Plan ahead and research local marriage requirements. You don’t want any surprises!
- Expect to run into your guests post-wedding. PRO TIP: Start your honeymoon a little early if you don’t want to tiptoe around your nosy aunt.
- Add little surprises for your guests to create the ultimate experience.
- Be aware of the currency and how it’s doing against the USD.
- Always carry (never check) your dress.
- If cost is going to be an issue, set a real budget and be prepared for the wedding to cost more than you expect.

EPISODE 11: 5 Things Wedding Planners Wish You Knew
Unveiling Paradise: Your Go-To Destination Wedding Podcast
09/14/22 • 37 min
Episode Summary
In my opinion (and I’m sure Joe’s opinion, too!), wedding planners are the glue that holds your wedding together. Tune in to this episode to learn the differences between coordinators and planners, why hiring a wedding planner is a smart idea, and 5 things wedding planners wish you knew.
Episode Notes
In this episode, we take a high level look at wedding planning. Specifically, why wedding planners are so important for a stress-free wedding for everyone - brides, grooms, family, friends and vendors. I share my experience as a professional wedding planner, and Joe gets his chance to shine as our resident expert, since as a professional photographer, he works with so many wedding planners and coordinators.
Full disclosure: Our goal for this episode is to share our points of view of wedding planning and coordination. Every wedding planner has a different view of their role at a wedding - this is just one of many.
Support us: patreon.com/unveilingparadise
Rules of Engagement for the Perfect Budget
- We’re not all the same: Hire the right planner for your wedding.
- We don’t know everything, so TRUST is key in a good client + wedding planner relationship.
- Social media is a starting point, not the end all.
- WE GOT YOU! Wedding planners are here for you in every possible way.
- We’re humans, too.
Links and Miscellaneous Thoughts from this Episode:
- There are a range of wedding planning/coordination from full service planning to day of coordination. When booking services, make sure you understand your personal needs, and find someone who can fit what you’re looking for.
- We’re not all the same so be sure to book the right company for your needs.
- Trust your wedding planner to take care of you, troubleshoot anything that arises during your wedding planning, and give them space to be creative for you.
- Use social media as a starting point, but understand that a lot of what you see is staged, and might not be applicable to your wedding. Social media is imitation, not inspiration.
- The big one - WE GOT YOU. Your wedding planners are here to be your hype squad, the fixers of all things, and anything else you need us to be.
- What’s in our kit - reels link
- Treat your wedding planners (and your entire wedding vendor team) with kindness. I promise, it will go a long way.

Wedding Day Rentals with Gabrielle Richter
Unveiling Paradise: Your Go-To Destination Wedding Podcast
05/24/23 • 41 min
Serious question: Do you know exactly what your venue provides for your wedding? Do they provide tables and chairs? Forks and knives? What about trash cans? In this episode, we talk about the rental items you might need for your wedding, what in the world is a rain hold, and what rental items are the most forgotten. Gabrielle Richter, President of Accel Events and Tents, joins us and shares her advice on how to best utilize a full-service rental company like Accel. If you’re planning an indoor wedding, and outdoor wedding, or even a rehearsal get together, you don’t want to miss this week’s episode.
Support us: patreon.com/unveilingparadise
- Why should I rent vs buy items for my wedding?
- Can you ensure it's appropriate quality, size, etc? What is your utilization after the wedding? Buying and throwing away leads to a lot of environmental waste. Renting items like linens, candles, and other small items is more sustainable for the environment.
- Where do we start when creating our rental list? First, think about your venue and what you NEED to rent - if you're indoors you'll need more decor vs hardware like tents and lighting. If you're outdoors, you'll likely need a lot more: tables, chairs, plates, napkins, linens, forks, glassware, etc.
- If you need a tent, rent it ASAP, and go bigger than you think. You can always downsize as you finalize your layout and guest count.
- What's a rain hold? If you're wanting a wedding under the stars, but are worried about the weather (rain and heat are a thing!!), you can hold a tent on your rental order, and cancel it as it gets closer to your wedding day. You'll pay a percentage of the total cost of the tent, vs paying 100%, but you'll have the confidence of knowing that if the weather goes sideways, you have the tent you need.
- What are the most common items that are forgotten when working on a rental order? Accessory tables like a check in table, bar back, memorial table, lighting in all areas - catering tents, over the bar, cocktail tables, etc, extra table wear (plates, forks, etc) and trash cans are often forgotten.
- What are some cool accent pieces? Chandeliers and other fun lighting options, lounge furniture, bar fronts, and tablescape - colored goblets, gold or black flatware, personalized napkins, chargers. These items create a huge impact.

You Asked, We Answered!
Unveiling Paradise: Your Go-To Destination Wedding Podcast
03/29/23 • 27 min
HOT DAMN... We did it! We made it through season 2. Quick update: Tessa and Joe didn’t kill each other, and are STILL BFFs. #winning
Here’s the deal - In the middle of season 1, we stopped answering our listener questions. Why? Because we realized that we talk way too much, and the episodes were getting soooo long! We had to make the tough decision to cut them (OK, Joe made that decision so blame him). The good news is that we’ve gathered all of those questions to answer today, on the last episode of season 2. Sit back, tune in, and enjoy our season 2 wrap.
Support us: patreon.com/unveilingparadise
We got a TON of great questions, so we picked our faves to answer in this episode. Listen in hear what Tessa and Joe have to say... as usual, they’re not on the same page for most.
- What do we need to consider when we’re looking for flowers? Where do we start? What’s a nice budget and what should we consider?
- What are your thoughts on book rooms? Do we think we need a travel agent? Should we meet them in advance to make sure they’re a good fit for our wedding?
- When you’re choosing your wedding party, how do you choose? Do you pick your best friend or sister? Or someone who would do the best job?
- Do you think we should spend so much money on your wedding - a one night party, or spend it on something more long term, like a house? How do we prioritize?
- How do we navigate the outside voices that are “helping” us with our wedding planning, and how do we keep the peace? “I want to invite 100 of my friends to your wedding”, “I’m paying so I should be able to pick your photographer”... What do we do??
- When should we send save the dates and let people know about our wedding? Is there such a thing as too soon?
Ahhhh, we miss you all already, but we will see you soon in SEASON 3!!

What's In - and Out - For Your 2023 Wedding
Unveiling Paradise: Your Go-To Destination Wedding Podcast
01/11/23 • 28 min
We’re saying goodbye to 2022, and hello to 2023 with our predictions on what wedding trends we’ll be seeing this year. As a professional wedding planner and photographer, we’ve been to a TON of weddings last year (#craziestbusiestyearever) so we’ve got some strong opinions about what’s hot (and what’s not) for 2023.
Hint: Viva magenta! And periwinkle? We barely knew you.
Support us: patreon.com/unveilingparadise
What’s In - and Out - Our 2023 Wedding Trends
2023 is such a unique year - we’re coming out of 2+ years with COVID restrictions so you’re seeing a huge shift between couples who are ready to celebrate, and couples who are still easing their way back to normal. Our list of trends reflects both.
- WHAT’S IN - Smaller, more intimate weddings. People were forced to downsize during the pandemic, but the trend is still (and will continue to be) popular! Having more $$ to spend on your guests, creating a more intimate experience is huge in 2023.
- WHAT’S IN - Flash and film photography. People are OBSESSED with poppy, colorful photography, thanks to TikTok and Instagram. Social media is playing a huge part in photo styles this year. (Bonus: disposable cameras are back!)
- WHAT’S IN - Social Media is here to stay. TikTok, Instagram and Pinterest will still be major sources for inspiration, tips, advice and *also* for finding and booking vendors.
- WHAT’S IN - Bright colors are IN! The Pantone color of 2023 is Magenta, and we predict weddings leaning into bold, bright color palettes.
- WHAT’S IN - Embroidered everything. Gloves, veils, dresses - this trend is hot right now because it’s so visually appealing, totally social media worthy!
- FUN FACTS: Tessa wears driving gloves and Joe wears Toms with socks.
- WHAT’S IN - Venmo and Cashless Registries. Storytime: When Tessa got married she didn’t change her name for about 6 months, so all the checks addressed to her married name couldn’t be deposited until after she changed her name!
- WHAT’S IN - Private Last Dance, Private Vows. Finding some quality time alone on your wedding day is trending, big time. FACT: Joe hates the private last dance (he says it’s awkward) and votes for a big send off instead. Tessa’s suggestion - do a private first dance before the reception doors open.
- WHAT’S IN - Afterparties. Couples are enjoying the post reception celebration. Tessa’s tip: If you take the after party elsewhere and you’re in your wedding dress - people will buy you drinks all night! Joe’s tip: Keep the part going with a welcome dinner and after party - do both!
- WHAT’S OUT - Large, uniform wedding parties. Keep your wedding party smaller, or have them sit during the ceremony. Don’t be afraid to mix genders in your wedding party.
- WHAT’S OUT - Welcome bags and wedding favors. You spend a lot of money on these items and not everyone appreciates them, it also creates unnecessary waste. Is it worth it?

Pre-Gaming Your Wedding Hair and Makeup with CJ Siepka
Unveiling Paradise: Your Go-To Destination Wedding Podcast
02/01/23 • 32 min
Why is using cheap shampoo better than a nice, fancy shampoo before your wedding day? When is it better to forgo sunscreen rather than slathering it on? Do you want to learn some tips to manage baked-in-the-sun-for-way-too-long sunburns? Professional hair and makeup artist, CJ Siepka, is here to answer all of these questions and more!
In this episode, CJ shares her industry secrets on ways to stay snatched and look cool all day long. Together with Joe and Tessa, a professional wedding photographer and wedding planner, they share their points of views on ways to maximize your wedding day hair and makeup.
Support us: patreon.com/unveilingparadise
PRE-WEDDING DAY HAIR AND MAKEUP PREP
- First things first - with the advancement of cameras (digital, HD), your pores are much more visible than before. Makeup is a natural photoshop, making it easier for photographers to edit any imperfections post-wedding. Blemishes? No thanks!
- Pro tip before your wedding day:
- DON’T do anything different (facials, waxing, brow tattoos... don’t try it for the first time right before your wedding)
- DO: stay healthy, drink lots of water, get exercise
- DO: Shampoo your hair the night before, and arrive with dry, clean hair.
- DO: Use cheap hotel shampoo to open your hair cuticles (it makes your hair frizzier and easier to style... who knew?)
- DON’T: Use conditioner the night before your wedding
- HOW TO: Troubleshoot sunburns - Avoid going into the sun before the wedding, practice wearing sunscreen beforehand so your skin knows how to react to makeup over sunscreen - let it soak in and then put on your makeup. Green primer can sometimes help balance the red sunburn.
- JOE’S TIP: If you have major tan lines (sports bra, tank top, etc) wear a lei over the sunburn to help hide it!
- Speaking of cover ups, a good hair and makeup artist can also cover tattoos, if needed.
- HOW TO: Troubleshoot pimples - Don’t pop your pimples, and try not to touch them! Makeup will cover the color, but not the texture. You can ask your photographer to help clean up any pimples that arise.
- HOW TO: Troubleshoot hangovers - Put wet hand towels in the freezer - use these as cold compresses (and lots of concealer, color corrector)
- Why hire a professional hair and makeup artist? In addition to making everyone look photo and 360 ready, they keep everyone on schedule which is so important for your wedding day.
WEDDING DAY HAIR AND MAKEUP TIPS
- Wedding day makeup - keep it fresh with waterproof makeup (mascara and liners), good quality makeup, use primers to fill imperfections. Thin layers will help with the sweating and crying.
- Wedding day hair - lots and lots of hairspray
- Wedding day sweat - avoid wiping or rubbing your face with a tissue. Instead, dab with a handkerchief or a face towel from the hotel. Guys - groom styling is a thing to keep you nice and matte all day long

How to Curate the PERFECT Bar Experience with Chad McDonald
Unveiling Paradise: Your Go-To Destination Wedding Podcast
03/15/23 • 31 min
When we ask couples what their priorities are for their wedding, the #1 answer is “good food, good drinks!” We 100% agree that good food and drinks are WEDDING MUSTS, but what exactly does that mean? In this week’s episode, we get a little tipsy with Chad McDonald, owner of Stir Beverage. He goes into detail about how to elevate your wedding day bar, from the actual cocktails to the staffing to the tiny little details. Your wedding day drinks will be one of the most memorable parts of your day, so why not make them AMAZING?
Whether you’re getting married at a venue that includes a full bar, or if you’re completely building a bar from bottom up for your wedding, this episode has tips and advice for you. In addition to being a professional wedding planner and photographer, we both consider ourselves professional drinkers, so raise your glasses and let’s CHEERS to another fun episode.
Support us: patreon.com/unveilingparadise
CURATING THE PERFECT BAR FOR YOUR WEDDING
- Signature cocktails - the statement drinks that will be featured at your wedding - often one for each partner highlighting their specific preferences. It’s so important to start with a client’s personal preference and preferred flavor palettes to create their signature drink. They should hit all your senses - it should look amazing, smell amazing, taste amazing!
- Large, important details: the aesthetics are so important - using a real bar front vs a table with linens, using beautiful glassware, having a custom bar menu for guests - all of these attention to detail items make your guests enjoy this experience.
- FACT: Guests hang out at the bar, so why wouldn’t you create a hospitable place to hang out? According to Chad, the bar is a focal point, a gathering place, and often the centerpiece to your reception!
- HOT TREND: Custom ice cubes - they’re clear, branded and GORGEOUS.
- We’ve been craving local ingredients in our food and cuisines for years - why wouldn’t we demand the same for our drinks? Customize your cocktails by using local flavors from the location you’re getting married at. We eat local - we should drink local, too!
- CHAD GETS HEATED! Having a real bartender is critical - they can be shaking 2 drinks at the same time, double pouring, while talking to your guests at the same time. They can also freestyle if your guests want something off menu, and stay cool under pressure. Having real bartenders vs banquet bartenders makes a huge difference in your service.
- Champagne Towers, LOVE
- Spraying champagne, HATE
- Champagne toasts, 100% LOVE
- Beer kegs... LOVE!
- While Chad says rum and gin are the least popular drinks, Tessa believes that Joe paid him to say that! (And say that bourbon, vodka and tequila are the most popular). BARF.
- Final note - Chad is a ROCK STAR and Joe and I were 100% fangirling over him. Truth.
