Perfectionism: A Trauma Response
Trauma Rewired
11/22/22 • 51 min
Our society rewards those who work hard, appear to never make mistakes, and seem to have everything under control. We’ve collectively decided on what perfect looks like and attributed perfectionism with the ideal person. What if we told you that perfectionism is actually a protective measure used to prevent oneself from feelings of rejection, abandonment, and worthlessness? These words don’t quite scream “perfect” do they?
Trauma Rewired hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth have touched upon this trauma response before, but today’s episode is a deep dive into how it can develop and lead to harmful avoidance behaviors. They deconstruct perfectionism, including defining the three types of perfectionism and how it interplays with CPTSD elements like the inner critic.
You’ll learn the many health consequences that the chronic stress of perfectionism can cause, and how to distinguish excellence from perfectionism. Jennifer and Elisabeth also share their experience with perfectionism, and how it can push us into burnout or freeze states.
Perfectionism is not an attainable goal, which makes it debilitating and a hindrance to healing trauma. To take the first step towards moving out of perfectionism, tune in!
Topics discussed in this episode:
- Defining the 3 types of perfectionism
- Perfectionism as a trauma response
- Jennifer’s example of setting yourself up for failure
- The effects of perfectionism on our health
- Maladaptive coping mechanisms for perfectionism
- How to recognize perfectionist behaviors and thinking
- Jennifer on taking action against her perfectionism
- Trauma healing, neurosomatic intelligence, and integration
- Limiting beliefs push the loop of perfectionism
- Elisabeth on the importance on self-regulation tools in her life
- How perfectionism negatively affects organizations and employees

The Inner Critic of Complex Post Traumatic Stress
Trauma Rewired
04/22/24 • 49 min
We’ve all experienced the inner critic to some extent. You know, that voice inside of your head saying you’re not good enough, or that you’re a bad person. Where does this voice come from and why is it so vicious? Well, for people dealing with CPTS, this voice is even louder, and even more critical. The volume gets turned up ten notches, and turning it off feels like a game of tug of war. Understanding where this voice comes from and how it manifests is a crucial part to replacing the inner critic with self compassion.
On this episode of Trauma Rewired, Elisabeth and Jennifer sit down to discuss the inner critic, specifically the severity of it when it comes to people with CPTS, what activates the inner critic loop cycle, what part of the brain the inner critic activates, the reflexive responses associated with the inner critic, and finally, how NSI training can help with quieting the inner critic.
This type of reflexive response is created as a means of survival, the brain always wants to protect itself. However, the constant cycle of judgment, criticism, demeaning thoughts about the self becomes maladaptive when it stops serving its original purpose.
There is a way to quiet the inner critic, which we want to share with you today.
Tune in to find out how to turn down the volume on the inner critic, and the volume up on self compassion. Topics discussed in this episode:
- Characteristics of the inner critic for those experiencing CPTS
- Where the inner critic lives in the brain
- The fawn response and how it’s related to the inner critic
- What activates the inner critic loop?
- The root cause of the inner critic
- How authenticity is affected by attachment style
- Freeze trauma response
- The opposite of the inner critic
- How NSI training can move you out of the inner critic loop cycle
- The importance of creating an internal environment of safety
- Being exposed to other people’s inner critic
- Gossip as an external critic
- Combating the external critic with self compassion

When a child’s needs aren’t being met by their caregiver, by not being fed or feeling safe, they develop a distorted view of relationships. This attachment schema is the lens through which they examine the behavior of others, impacting their ability to form relationships and lead a healthy, happy life.
In past episodes, hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth have talked about connection being one of our survival needs, but an insecure attachment directly challenges this need. Being close to others, feeling vulnerable and connected, can also be very dysregulating to those who learned to survive with unemotional or unreliable caregivers.
So, how can you overcome your learned patterns to create healthy relationships with yourself and others? The answer is nervous system training.
In this episode, Jennifer and Elisabeth will walk you through attachment schema, how the three insecure attachment styles develop and show up as behavioral outputs, and how nervous system regulation has helped them work toward lasting change.
Tune in for all this and more!
Topics discussed in this episode:
- Attachment style from the NSI perspective
- How insecure attachment schema affects social development
- Nervous system regulation as a way to change our patterns
- The areas of the brain responsible for creating neuro tags
- How the 3 insecure attachment styles develop and are expressed
- Misconceptions about avoidant attachment style
- Disorganized attachment and complex trauma

Presence
Trauma Rewired
12/26/23 • 52 min
How do you show up in the world, in relationships, at work? Even just sitting in a sauna. Can you safely say you are fully present in these situations? If you feel you aren’t present most of the time, you’re not alone. Most people aren’t, especially if you’ve experienced complex trauma. On the bright side, presence can be learned by using the right tools to get you there. Presence is a topic that is near and dear to our hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth’s hearts, precisely because of how they both struggled to be present after experiencing trauma, but also the gift presence provided them in all aspects of life once re-learned. In today’s episode, Jennifer and Elisabeth discuss how not being present, repressing emotions and dissociation can lead to health issues and deteriorate relationships. While offering the tools required to become present to live a fulfilling and healthy life with secure attachment styles in relationships.
This episode dives deep into the science behind presence as well as what happens when you are in your body for the first time in a long time and how using the tools provided in the NSI training can help. Understanding how your brain operates when it is fully present and how it affects your body, while having tools to help you get there, can literally put years back on to your life.
Tune in for this and more!
Topics discussed in this episode:
- How Jennifer and Elisabeth define presence
- Why presence is important for healing complex traumas
- Empowerment that comes from presence
- How presence is a time expander
- What is a trigger?
- How intentional training can lead to presence
- The time it takes to cultivate full presence in the body

Anxiety
Trauma Rewired
07/01/24 • 57 min
In this episode of Trauma Rewired, hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristof are joined by Matt Bush as they unpack anxiety. The conversation starts with an exploration of how neurodivergent conditions such as ADHD and autism impact executive functioning, sensory processing, and create hypersensitivities that lead to emotional overwhelm. They highlight the importance of self-assessment and retraining of sensory systems to better manage these challenges. Elisabeth Kristof further connects developmental and complex trauma to nervous system responses, noting how trauma shapes our interpretation of signals and can keep individuals in a constant state of fight, flight, or freeze. Jennifer Wallace emphasizes the crucial aspect of self-awareness and deep self-knowledge in managing anxiety, advocating for practices that foster body awareness, emotional expression, and self-regulation.
Anxiety is not just a mental disorder but a physiological response emanating from sensory mismatches and respiratory inefficiencies. Chronic hyperventilation, for example, sends constant threat signals to the brain, keeping the nervous system on high alert. Through regular neuro training and specific breathing exercises, individuals can better regulate their nervous systems and reduce anxiety.
Let’s reframe anxious thoughts and use cognitive tools to consider positive outcomes, thereby preventing the negative spiral of anxiety and trauma.
Discuss the tangible benefits of applying neurosomatic principles to everyday life. Explore sensory mismatches, emphasizing the need to address deficits in visual, vestibular, somatosensory, and interoceptive systems to alleviate anxiety. We advocate for ongoing self-assessment and retraining as ways to establish a new baseline of wellness.
Topics discussed in this episode:
- Impact of Neurodivergence
- Trauma and Nervous System Responses
- Self-Assessment and Sensory Retraining
- Role of Chronic Hyperventilation
- Anxiety as a Physiological State
- Cognitive Reframing of Anxiety
- Female-Specific Anxieties
- Sensory Mismatch and Anxiety
