Thriving Thru Menopause

This week my guest is Gwen Floyd the founder of Wile a female-founded and female-formulated business.

There is a blank space in the health industry. Wile is trying to help fill it through education and products and culture that could not only provide science-backed, highly effective solutions for the challenges women face during this life phase, but also support women to identify with a new narrative about the power and promise it holds.

We talk about how perimenopause + menopause isn’t the end of youth, fun and being carefree, and how women are embracing this next stage of life.

Why Gwen believes the life phase that starts around 40, which we call “Grown,” is the best, most aspirational time of a woman’s life

We delve deeper into:

  • What inspired her to start Wile?
  • How did her own journey mirror her mother's journey?
  • Why Wile targets stress hormones in addition to estrogen and progesterone
  • Why is it important to speak and be open about perimenopause and menopause?
  • How is Wile helping to remove the stigma of midlife with its concept of 'Grown'

SE4: EP 12 How to Better Educate Women About Menopause And Life Post Menopause

This we are diving into how we better educate women about menopause. I am joined by Professor Joyce Harper of University College London in the Institute for Women’s Health where she is Head of the Reproductive Science and Society Group.

Joyce is a passionate educator and researcher on women’s health from puberty to menopause and author of Your Fertile Years,

Her research has shown that women do not understand menopause and go into it blindly. We have to improve this. In our conversation, we talk about important points including:

  • Why menopause is not a deficiency or a syndrome - it is not a disease
  • Why menopause should be on the curriculum of every medical school
  • That is important to ensure everyone, men and women get educated on the symptoms of perimenopause.
  • Why we need more research into menopause and to ensure that the learnings are disseminated in ways that lay people can understand.
  • Why hormone tests are meaningless and why we should be observing symptoms instead.
  • GP's are the frontline but where possible people should be referred to a menopause expert if necessary for HRT
  • It is critical we balance the negative narrative by encouraging more conversation on the positives of life post menopause

And more..

The State of Menopause - What Is Going On?

My guest this week is Ann Marie McQueen who is not only going through perimenopause herself, she brings 25 years of award-winning journalism experience to her coverage, with recognition for excellence in health and feature writing from the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada and the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario.

Hotflash Inc has been a newsletter I have subscribed to over the last 12 months and I love how Ann Marie covers the latest clinical studies, treatments, products, guidance and more via the Hotflash Inc weekly research letter, podcast and across social media to a 20k+ global perimenoposse that is growing fast.

Hotflash Inc subscribers include some of the top CEOs, doctors and practitioners in the space, alongside curious, open-minded women seeking to connect the dots and find their own solutions.

In our frank conversation we talk about the following:

  • Menopause differences around the world and what Ann Marie has observed across N. America, the UK, Australia, the Middle East where she lives, India and more
  • Different narratives around menopause and how they impact discussion and treatment;
  • Why do Ann Marie and I have a problem with the deficiency/disease narrative that has gained ground in the UK and is spreading to other countries?
  • Why do we always talk about estrogen and often leave progesterone and testosterone out of the conversation?
  • Ann Marie touch on some of the newest areas of research; and her own tips and tricks from covering health and wellness, and going through perimenopause for so long.

Top takeaways

1) it's okay to take your time and decide what's right for you - and change it if you need to

2) recognizing the differences in and impact of the way we talk about and approach menopause (deficiency versus transition)

3) there is growing body research, supplements, hormone therapy and startups behind these serving perimenopausal and menopausal women

Follow Ann Marie on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok where she is HotflashInc and subscribe to her newsletter https://hotflashinc.substack.com/ it 100% worth it
