2023 marks the 50 year anniversary of what is widely accepted and agreed upon as the birth of hip hop, August 11, 1973. We are celebrating those 50 years with a series of conversations with some our favorite podcasts. With hip hop being the most influential and dominant musical genre of the past two decades or so, we believe it's important to reflect on its rich history and evolution. Throughout this series, we will be joined by guests who will share their thoughts and experiences. From their earliest hip hop memories to their thoughts on the current state of affairs, this series will take a fun look at hip hop and its impact on society and culture.

In this episode, we are joined by Jay Ray and DJ Sir Daniel from the Queue Points Podcast. The conversation starts with us discussing their hip hop entry points and how it pulled them in. We talked about the artists, albums and moments that made them fall in love with hip hop.

We end the episode with a game that we call "This or That?", where we presented Jay Ray and Sir Daniel with two options and they had to choose between them. The choices ranged from two classic hype men, to which city has the better rappers, Atlanta or Philly.

Originally released in January 2021, here’s another episode that we’ve taken from the vault and remixed. Check out this conversation that we had about a true legend, Tevin Campbell. We discussed our favorite moments from his career, the songs that we loved, and wonder how he's been able to keep such a low profile in this day and age. Miguel compares Tevin to another R&B legend, (that Tevin himself confirmed in our IG comments) and Christina tells us about her days as video girl in Vancouver.

This week, we're discussing one of the most well-rounded entertainers of all time. She started as a child actress in the 1970's on such shows as Good Times and A New Kind Of Family. She then had roles on hit shows such as Diff'rent Strokes and Fame, before starting her musical career as a teen in the 1980's. Since then she's released 11 studio albums and has sold well over 100 million albums worldwide, and has influenced some of the biggest pop stars in the world today.
She continued her acting career in the 90's and 2000's in films like Poetic Justice, Nutty Professor II, the Why Did I Get Married series and For Colored Girls.
We forgot to mention that she comes from one of the most famous families in entertainment.
And if you didn't know, her "first name ain't Baby, it's Janet."

On this episode, we're talking about a show that was extremely pivotal to Hip Hop becoming mainstream. This show brought Black culture into living rooms all across North America on a nightly basis, at a time when pretty much no one else was doing it, and it was done in a way that wasn't sugar coated or watered down. The Arsenio Hall Show was the first late night show that was truly for us.

B-Side: SZA

They Reminisce Over You

play

12/30/22 • 11 min

When we recorded our "New R&B For Old Heads" episode, SZA's SOS album release date hadn't been announced yet. Ironically, it came out on the same day that we released the episode. So, we had to go back in and record this B-Side the next day with some new information that had been presented to us via the album. Christina gives us what might be a controversial take by comparing SZA to an R&B legend, and we get into the musical parallels of the two artists.
