TWG EKS 02: Embracing Your Strengths, Passions, and Exceptionalism in Education by Igniting your S.H.I.N.E. with LaVonna Roth
08/02/23 • 26 min
Welcome to today’s interview on the Emotional Kids Summit.
We are opening this summit with our first guest, LaVonna Roth. LaVonna is a Special Education teacher with a specialty in deaf education and Social Emotional Learning.
LaVonna, Jonily, and I have known one another for several years.
When we were considering who would be an ideal person to write the Foreword for our book, which you heard about yesterday, we both said LaVonna at the same time. We are so glad we did! She wrote a heartfelt introduction to Math DYSconnected.
In today’s episode, I read a segment of the Foreword and asked Ms. Roth to reflect on what she was feeling as she wrote it. Check out her reflection in today’s episode.
We also discuss her business, Ignite your S.H.I.N.E.R Listen in to learn how Ms. Roth Ignites her audience.

TWG EKS 03: Nurturing Competence, Easing Anxiety: Insights on Promoting Self-Worth in Anxious Children with Edward Plimpton, PhD
Welcome to today’s interview on the Emotional Kids Summit.
In this interview, Edward, a clinical psychologist, discusses his background in studying mother-infant interaction in non-human primates and his shift to focusing on early infant development and working with anxious children after his son was diagnosed with OCD. He shares that his interest in understanding anxiety in children led to the creation of his podcast, where he interviews experts in the field. Edward emphasizes the importance of developing Islands of Competence in anxious children, such as engaging in sports, playing a musical instrument, or being a helpful individual. These activities provide children with a sense of competence, self-worth, and teach important skills like persistence and embracing discomfort. He also explores the foundations of mental health, including attachment styles, temperament, sensory processing, and the retention of primitive reflexes.
