Have you ever wished that you could ditch the morning commute, smash the alarm clock and take off on a worldwide adventure without worrying about giving up your career? I've worked from 20+ countries over the last 5 years as a digital marketer. One of the questions I often get is "can I do this too?" Part 2: 3 Lies of the "9 to 5"
Traditional, conventional knowledge says to go to school, get good grades, get a job, climb your way up the corporate ladder, and in twenty to forty years you’ll be able to retire and finally do the things that you really want to do. If you take conventional advice, you will get conventional results. Today, I want to talk to you about the three lies of the “9 to 5.”
Lie #1 is that travel is expensive. You don’t need to wait until you’re old and retired to travel. Some of the greatest cultural experiences I’ve had have been in low-cost countries. Last time I was in southeast Asia, a scooter rental was $4 a day, and to fill it with gas was $1.40 for the week. A full meal was $3.30. A villa with a master bedroom, suite, swimming pool, and daily maid service was $30 per night. It’s cheaper for me to be travelling than living in the United States.
Lie #2 is that you need a piece of paper giving you permission to do a certain type of work. The truth is that the powers that be want you to go into thirty years of debt so that you can be a cubical slave to make them more money. Putting you into massive debt as the first step in your adult life is going to ensure that you’re a good worker for the next thirty years. You don’t need a piece of paper to work as a marketer, you need the ability.
Lie #3 is that working for someone else is the safe, responsible thing to do. Oxford University says that over the next twenty-five years, 47% of jobs will disappear. That means if you’re in school right now, most likely the job you’re training for won’t even exist in a decade. To survive in today’s world, you need to be able to adapt to change.
In this podcast, we’re going to talk about how to use the power of marketing to be able to work from anywhere in the world. If you want a different life, one where you can redistribute your retirement over your entire life, then you need to take different action.
