19 Lessons Learned in 2019
02/11/20 • 29 min
Sometimes I experience deafness when it comes to advice from people that are further ahead of me. The advice just doesn’t mean anything to me, and it’s not until I look back and see my struggles that I finally understand what they were saying. Without that perspective, it can be hard to understand the advice we get.
Each year, I look back and see what lessons I learned so I don’t make the same mistakes. Let’s walk through 19 things I learned last year.
1. If you’re already having success, it’s not about how hard you work; it’s how much unique value you are bringing to the marketplace.
2. There are ebbs and flows that are out of your control. Ride the wave instead of being mad that it exists.
3. Don’t assume that growth will always be at the same pace.
4. Education and mentorship are some of the most important activities in a business.
5. Longevity is cooler than maximizing revenue and profits.
6. There are only a few things that make a difference in a business.
7. Read more. This goes along with taking the time to think.
8. Personal growth translates to business growth, and the same goes for shortcomings.
9. Find something to win at outside of business.
10. Money doesn’t change your personal relationships. They require just as much effort.
11. Money does reduce stress as long as you are building systems.
12. There’s a cost to everything. Simplify your life.
13. There’s no reason you can’t do the things you want to do right now. You just have to pay the price.
14. Skills and leadership beat everything else, as always.
15. Execution is so much more important and so much harder than ideas.
16. We claim to understand more about ourselves than we actually know.
17. Learn from all subjects and all industries.
18. Do cool projects with cool people.
19. The things that take the longest to do are the most rewarding.
These are the lessons I’ve learned, and I hope I can internalize these lessons moving forward.

Top Ten Best Marketing Books For Entrepreneurs
The great part about books is somebody spent years of their life figuring the content out. It’s a highly curated piece of content and a lot of thought has gone into it. Reading books is one of my favorite ways to figure out what’s next for my company. If you’re a marketer who wants to crush their competitors, these books are going to help you out.
1. Breakthrough Advertising by Eugene Schwartz. This book was written in 1966 and has everything you need to succeed in today’s marketing world.
2. The Big Idea by Todd Brown. Copy writing starts with a big idea, and no matter how technically proficient you are, your marketing campaign will suck if your big idea does.
3. 80/20 Sales and Marketing by Perry Marshall. It tells you that if you want to make more money, you have to focus on high-value tasks.
4. The Millionaire Fastlane by MJ DeMarco. This book breaks down the economics of making it big. It’s about how the value you provide dictates your income.
5. The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle. This is all about how to develop skillsets. Marketing is a skillset just like any other that you need to practice.
6. The Culture Code by Daniel Coyle. In this book, he breaks down how great cultures are made.
7. Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath. When you read this book, it almost sounds too simple. Stating things in a simple way that sticks in peoples’ minds is the key to success.
8. Story by Robert McKee. It’s about story, not marketing. In almost any kind of marketing, story is really big.
9. The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday. It talks about the concept that the problems we experience are simply showing us the way.
10. Principles by Ray Dalio. He talks about understanding the world as it actually is instead of how you wish it was.

10 Ways to Stay Sane and Productive in Lockdown
Today I want to talk about ten strategies that keep me sane and productive during lockdown, or any other time I’m working from home day after day. If you’re new to remote work, want to spice up your routine, or just need to listen to something for ten minutes to entertain yourself, this is going to help you.
Get up at the same time every day. When you stop following a routine, things can get out of whack pretty easily.
Get dressed. There’s a mentality that goes along with being dressed versus having no pants at 5:00PM. It makes you take yourself more seriously.
Scheduling. If there’s no boundaries, you may not be disciplined with your time or you may overwork. Put everything on the calendar so you can maintain balance with work and free time.
Reach out to your friends and family. The world has slowed down and it’s a great opportunity to catch up with people.
Workouts are important. Don’t miss or neglect them, and hold yourself accountable.
Make time for your hobbies. Time block the things you want to do and maybe haven’t had the time to try out yet. It’s a bit easier to make time for them right now.
Schedule breaks. This is important as it’s easy to get caught up in your work which leads to burnout and ultimately, less productivity.
Don’t get interrupted. This is a big adjustment for most people as you’re not used to being around your significant other or family. Switching tasks can be detrimental.
Do a work challenge. Push yourself, because now is the time to be building and not pulling back.
