Cultivating Empathy for Yourself

In this episode, Dr. Laura Parson and I discuss contemporary theories around care and empathy especially as they pertain to women learning to care for themselves. This is a great episode for women who struggle to insert their needs in the equation of daily life. We review reasons that women's needs have not historically been at the forefront of most environments and then explore how to acknowledge and legitimize women's ways of knowing and experiencing with an eye toward having empathy for our own needs. With an emphasis that empathy needs to be extended to self before being effectively offered to others, our conversation applies developmental theory to practical situations to help all of us care a little more deeply for ourselves while balancing care for others.
Dr. Laura Parson is an assistant professor of educational and organizational leadership at the North Dakota State University. Her PhD is in teaching and learning higher education from the North Dakota State University, and she has a master's degree in adult education from Westminster College with a certification in teaching English as a second language. She's authored numerous papers and books and has been the recipient of multiple awards and grants in the public government and private sector. She advocates using policy and curriculum to recreate the teaching and learning environment in higher education to promote equitable and effective learning spaces that are more inclusive and equitable. I have the good fortune of collaborating with Laura on a consistent basis. She regularly inspires me with her insights into the unique experiences of women and the hurdles we often unknowingly face in a world largely built by and for men.

With her down to earth and practical style, Laura sees situations and individuals through a unique lens, and I can't wait to connect you with her wisdom. When she's not teaching, writing, or researching, you can find Laura in nature, she's been an ultra-marathon runner, and more recently got into yoga as a way to support herself as an athlete. Having connected with the benefits of a regular yoga practice, she decided she also wanted to teach yoga to other athletes so you can connect with her through her website.
