After a study done at Cornell University, researchers found that people who enter their homes through an entry way that is close to the kitchen tend to eat 15% more than those who enter farther away from the kitchen. That’s a huge number, especially for the large number of Americans who are overweight. Nutritionist suggest that you set out enticing bowls of healthy snacks and nutritional “stuff” in plain sight so it’s the first thing you are tempted to grab. Choose bright apples in your holiday displays and nuts in a bowl on the counter instead of chips.

#374: Food can make your smarter!: Medical minute
The Staying Young Show 2.0 - Entertaining | Educational | Health & Wellness

Leave it to Finland to find a connection between reading skills and nutritional intake. Researchers studied children in the first and third grade and found that there was a direct correlation with higher reading levels and the amount of vegetables, fruits, fish, and whole grains they consumed. On the contrary, those that ate sugary foods, red meats, and processed carbs did not fair so well. It leaves me to think that children in the US are so far from their actual learning potential. Imagine what they could do if everyone incorporated a healthy diet at home and at school.

Do you struggle with acne? I may have some good news for you. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Acne is caused by the backup of dead skin cells and oil in hair follicles. This leads to pain and inflammation in the follicle itself. Around forty to fifty five percent of adults aged twenty to forty experience adult acne. It can lead to skin infections, scarring, and low self-esteem. A study was recently published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology stating that researchers are working on a vaccine to prevent acne. So, how does it work? Well, it works by attacking the toxin secreted by acne vulgaris. This reduces the inflammation to the hair follicle. Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing persistent acne.
