086: Minimalist Motherhood (Interview with Diane Boden)
02/25/21 • 31 min
Minimalist Motherhood?
It may seem like minimalism and motherhood don't work together! I used to feel that way too. I thought minimalism was just for young couples who lived in modern apartments in the city.
But when I became a mom and my kids started growing, I realized all I did was clean up after them. All day long, I picked up toys, did dishes and laundry, and moved paperwork from one flat surface to another.
This is not how I pictured motherhood or how I wanted to spend the rest of it.
Minimalism and motherhood may seem like complete opposites, but learning what minimalism really means will give you the space you want and desperately need.
On this episode of The Simple Home Podcast I talk with Diane Boden from The Minimalist Moms Podcast. Diane is the author of the brand new book, "Minimalist Moms" (which will be released in early March 2021). She teaches us what minimalism looks like in motherhood, realistic tips for decluttering, and how having less and doing less will benefit your whole family.
Minimalism isn't just about have fewer possessions, although that does help. It's also about creating space for what's important to you and being grateful for what you already do have. Learning that you are enough and what you have is enough will go along way in you finding joy in motherhood.

085: Real Motherhood, Saving Money, and Living Intentionally with Amber of The Unhurried Homestead
There's so much information out there about living intentionally and enjoying motherhood, but what I want to hear is:
how real moms are making simple changes in their life to find space and balance and actually make the intentional living thing possible.
That's why I enjoyed this talk with Amber from The Unhurried Homestead SO much.
She is a mom of 4 who's found ways to make motherhood flow. And while she agrees that motherhood is busy, she's focused on her priorities and raising kids in a slow, intentional manor.
On this episode of The Simple Home Podcast, Amber shares a few of her routines that keep her life running smoothly, even with a farm, 4 kids, and homeschooling. She also shares her budgeting trick that has changed the way I spend money and will likely do the same for you!
The conversation flowed so naturally and I know you're going to be just as inspired by Amber as I am.
Motherhood doesn't look the same for everyone (no matter what we're lead to believe on Instagram), but you can find joy in your motherhood and your family with a little intention, slower days, and a few good routines!
Take some of Amber's advice and make it your own as you work towards simplifying your home and your life.

Gentle Parenting with Rachel Rainbolt
You know that quote, “I was the perfect parent before I had kids”?
Well...this may be my favorite parenting quote.
Before having kids, I thought I had it all figured out.
- I was going to be gentle with my kids, yet make sure they listened.
- I was going to empower them with my words and never quilt or shame them.
- I was going to teach and not punish.
- And, I was going to do it with a smile on my face.
Then I had kids and they became toddlers and my words weren’t always kind, my temper wasn’t always managed, and there were a lot of tears and frustrations (from my kids and me)!
I no longer felt like the perfect parent. And some days, not even an adequate one.
When you first become a parent, you parent from your own experiences and what you think is best and then you realize you’re parenting real human beings, with real feelings, independence, and perspectives. And stuff starts to get hard.
Before I go into our topic on Gentle Parenting,
I want you to know (something that has taken me a long time to take to heart), that you are enough right now. The only thing we can do is parent the best we know how right now and let God fill in the gaps.
So when you listen to this week’s episode of The Simple Home Podcast, listen with an open mind, but have grace for yourself! Rachel from Sage Family teaches us how to use gentle parenting as a way to connect with our kids, discipline with compassion, and raise happy, healthy, families. This is one parenting strategy that I’ve found great success with and I hope it gives you some new strategies and encouragement as well.
